As with the creation of the C-SPAN networks themselves, the nation and the scholarly community are indebted to the vision of Brian Lamb. Lamb recognized the potential of archiving C-SPAN programming and the power of making the archive available to the public. He presented his idea to Professor David Berg, the then head of the Department of Communication at Purdue University, who consulted with me, and we agreed that Professor Robert Browning, a specialist on Congress, would be an excellent fit to meet with Lamb and a group of Purdue faculty. At the time, I daresay none of us realized that Lamb’s successful recruitment of Browning as a willing collaborator would result in not only the enormous growth and success of the Archives but also a more than 30-year partnership. The C-SPAN Video Library began within the Purdue University School of Liberal Arts in 1987 under the leadership of Dr. Browning, who sought a way to archive and index the thousands of hours of congressional cover- age produced by the network every year. In the early days of the archive, because of the nature of the technology of the time, this meant physi- cally inserting and ejecting each videotape and tagging the contents for future retrieval. Currently, the Video Library records all three C-SPAN networks 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. The digitalization of video re- cording has dramatically transformed the recording, encoding, retrieval, and distribution processes, with the result that hundreds of thousands of hours of video have been made available to the public and the database ix x FOREWORD of C-SPAN programming has become an unparalleled chronological re- source on Congress and governmental affairs, with more than 250,000 digital hours of recording available. As of this writing, in this year alone more than 35 million videos have been viewed. C-SPAN’s achievements have not gone unrecognized. In 2010, following Peabody Awards in 1992 for its “ongoing service” of “providing access to information indispensable to an intelligent citizenry” and in 2000 for the series American Presidents: Life Portraits, C-SPAN received a third Peabody Award, this one for the Video Library. Reviewing the contributions to this volume and the four previous volumes, one cannot help but be impressed by the variety of scholarship included. The volumes feature contributions on discovery, learning, and engagement. Authors from a wide variety of epistemological approaches and disciplines employ the Video Library to explore an extraordinary range of subjects — for example, presidential debates, climate change, gen- der, judicial appointments, immigration, and crises — in a wide variety of contexts, floor debates, committee hearings, and town halls. And they do so with the full panoply of methodological approaches: traditional dis- course analysis, linguistic text analysis, video bite analysis, experiments, framing, and media effects, among others.     The Donald Trump-Rupert Murdoch relationship in the United States When Donald Trump ran as a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, Rupert Murdoch was reported to be initially opposed to him, so the Wall Street Journal and the New York Post were too.1 However, Roger Ailes and Murdoch fell out because Ailes wanted to give more positive coverage to Trump on Fox News.2 Soon afterwards, however, Fox News turned more negative towards Trump.3 As Trump emerged as the inevitable winner of the race for the nomination, Murdoch’s attitude towards Trump appeared to shift, as did his US news outlets.4 Once Trump became the nominee, he and Rupert Murdoch effectively concluded an alliance of mutual benefit: Murdoch’s news outlets would help get Trump elected, and then Trump would use his powers as president in ways that supported Rupert Murdoch’s interests. An early signal of this coming together was Trump’s public attacks on the AT&T-Time Warner merger, 21st Century Fox having tried but failed to acquire Time Warner previously in 2014. Over the last year and a half, Fox News has been the major TV news supporter of Donald Trump. Its coverage has displayed extreme bias in his favour, offering fawning coverage of his actions and downplaying or rubbishing news stories damaging to him, while also leading attacks against Donald Trump’s opponent in the 2016 presidential election, Hillary Clinton. Ofcom itself ruled that several Sean Hannity programmes in August 2016 were so biased in favour of Donald Trump and against Hillary Clinton that they breached UK impartiality rules.5 During this period, Rupert Murdoch has been CEO of Fox News, in which position he is also 1 See e.g.

Gabrielle Adjerad In light of what has been institutionalized in the nineties as “intersectionality” (Crenshaw, 1989), but emanated from a long tradition of feminism fostered by women of color (Hill-Collins, Bilge, 2016), feminist theory has increasingly shed light on the plurality of women’s experiences, the inseparable, overlapping and simultaneous differences constituting their identities, and the materiality of the various dominations engendered. At the turn of the twenty-first century, this paradigm seems compelling to address fictional diasporic narratives addressing the diverse discriminations encountered by migrant women and their descendants in the United States. However, adopting an intersectional feminist approach of literature, for research or in the classroom, raises methodological issues that this paper contends with. Some thinkers have considered the double pitfall of considering, on the one hand, the text as a mimetic document of plural lives and, on the other, of essentializing a symbolical “écriture feminine” (Felski, 1989). Some have highlighted the necessary critical movement between the archetypal dimension of gender and the social and historical individuals diversely affected by this ideology (De Lauretis, 1987). Yet, beyond this tension between an attention paid to abstraction on the one hand and experience on the other, we can consider that hegemony is made of different ideologies that may contradict one another (Balibar, Wallerstein, 1991).

We're here with some of the Black leaders of our country and people that are highly respected and people that have done a fantastic job and, for the most part, have been working on this whole situation with me right from the beginning. Participants. Yes. Yes. The President. And we've done a lot. We've done Opportunity Zones. We've done criminal justice reform. We've done things that people didn't even think possible. Criminal justice reform—we've let a lot of great people out of jail. Participants. Yes! [Applause] The President. And you know, Alice Johnson is, really, just such a great example. A fine woman. And she doesn't say she didn't do it; she made a mistake. But she was in there for 22 years when we let her out, and she had practically another 20 left. Participant. She did. The President.     Illinois Congressional Delegation Bios Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL) Senator Dick Durbin, a Democrat from Springfield, is the 47th U.S. Senator from the State of Illinois, the state’s senior senator, and the convener of Illinois’ bipartisan congressional delegation. Durbin also serves as the Assistant Democratic Leader, the second highest ranking position among the Senate Democrats. Also known as the Minority Whip, Senator Durbin has been elected to this leadership post by his Democratic colleagues every two years since 2005. Elected to the U.S. Senate on November 5, 1996, and re-elected in 2002, 2008, and 2014, Durbin fills the seat left vacant by the retirement of his long-time friend and mentor, U.S. Senator Paul Simon. Durbin sits on the Senate Judiciary, Appropriations, and Rules Committees. He is the Ranking Member of the Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on the Constitution and the Appropriations Committee's Defense Subcommittee. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth is an Iraq War Veteran, Purple Heart recipient and former Assistant Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs. She was among the first Army women to fly combat missions during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Duckworth served in the Reserve Forces for 23 years before retiring from military service in 2014 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. She was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2016 after representing Illinois’s Eighth Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives for two terms. In 2004, Duckworth was deployed to Iraq as a Black Hawk helicopter pilot for the Illinois Army National Guard.
