  • Everyday Feminism in the Digital Era: Gender, the Fourth Wave, and Social Media Affordances
EVERYDAY FEMINISM IN THE DIGITAL ERA: GENDER, THE FOURTH WAVE, AND SOCIAL MEDIA AFFORDANCES A Dissertation Submitted to the Temple University Graduate Board In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY by Urszula M. Pruchniewska May 2019 Examining Committee Members: Carolyn Kitch, Advisory Chair, Media and Communication Fabienne Darling-Wolf, Media and Communication Adrienne Shaw, Media and Communication Rebecca Alpert, Religion ABSTRACT The last decade has seen a pronounced increase in feminist activism and sentiment in the public sphere, which scholars, activists, and journalists have dubbed the “fourth wave” of feminism. A key feature of the fourth wave is the use of digital technologies and the internet for feminist activism and discussion. This dissertation aims to broadly understand what is “new” about fourth wave feminism and specifically to understand how social media intersect with everyday feminist practices in the digital era. This project is made up of three case studies –Bumble the “feminist” dating app, private Facebook groups for women professionals, and the #MeToo movement on Twitter— and uses an affordance theory lens, examining the possibilities for (and constraints of) use embedded in the materiality of each digital platform. Through in-depth interviews and focus groups with users, alongside a structural discourse analysis of each platform, the findings show how social media are used strategically as tools for feminist purposes during mundane online activities such as dating and connecting with colleagues. Overall, this research highlights the feminist potential of everyday social media use, while considering the limits of digital technologies for everyday feminism. This work also reasserts the continued need for feminist activism in the fourth wave, by showing that the material realities of gender inequality persist, often obscured by an illusion of empowerment.

1 allegations. 2 However, the prosecution has chosen to create a complicated case. The evidence that the 3 Court will hear over the course of the preliminary hearing is contradictory and confusing. Mr. 4 Masterson submits this brief as a guide to the bizarre – and unjust – twists this case has taken. The 5 evidence will show that the prosecution has been usurped by conspiracy theories and self-interested 6 TV personalities. It will show glaring contradictions in the statements by the complainants that 7 8 cannot support the charges. It will show constant communications among the complainants and 9 between them and potential witnesses, even after repeated admonitions from law enforcement that 10 such collusion would undermine the case against Mr. Masterson. The evidence will show an 11 investigation that from the early days of this matter was far more interested in attacking Mr. 12 Masterson's religion than investigating whether crimes had occurred. Ultimately, the evidence will 13 show that Mr. Masterson should not be held to answer for the charges in the criminal complaint. 14 15 16 II. THE CHARGES AND THE LEGAL STANDARD 17 On June 17, 2020, the Los Angeles County District Attorneys’ Office filed a three-count 18 criminal complaint against Mr. Masterson. Count 1 alleged a forcible rape under Penal Code Section 19 261(a)(2) on April 25, 2003 against Jane Doe 1. Count 2 alleged a forcible rape “on or between 20 October 1, 2003 and December 31, 2003” against Jane Doe 2. OPENING MONOLOGUE OPEN ON: HOUSE BAND AS MILA KUNIS ENTERS THE STAGE MILA (very distraught) Thank you. Thank you very much. I’m so excited to be here finally hosting Saturday Night Live. The thought of hosting this iconic show has truly terrified me, and in fact, if I am being honest, I am still more than a little nervous to be up here, but everyone has been so supportive this week… PETE DAVIDSON ENTERS THE STAGE. HE IS GIGGLING AND HAVING A HARD TIME WALKING STRAIGHT MILA (cont) Pete, what are you doing? Are you laughing at me? PETE What? No, no, no…you’re doing great. Or at least I assume you are. I really haven’t seen any of the show yet. PETE STARTS TO WALK PAST MILA, ALMOST BUMPING INTO HER. SHE REACHES OUT AND GRABS HIM TO STOP HIM. MILA Hold on there. Then why are you laughing? And why can’t you walk straight? PETE Am I? MILA You’re giggling like a kid who’s hiding something? PETE Who’s hiding anything? What do I have to hide? Nothing is going on backstage, that’s for sure. MILA So something’s happening backstage huh? PETE Damn she’s good. How’d you figure it out? MILA This is ridiculous. Everyone knows how nervous I am and no one is even bothering to be supportive? I’m going back there. They’ll be sorry. PETE WOBBLY STEPS IN FRONT OF MILA TO TRY AND STOP HER FROM GOING BACKSTAGE. PETE It’s probably best you don’t actually go back there.

  • 1970S American Family Life on Television Shifting Gender Dynamics in the Sitcoms the Brady Bunch and That ‘70S Show
1970s American Family Life On Television Shifting Gender Dynamics in the Sitcoms The Brady Bunch and That ‘70s Show By Tom Hegeman 4053079 Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Frank Mehring Second Reader: Dr. László Munteán Department of English Language and Culture August 15, 2015 Hegeman4053079/2 Abstract The main purpose of this research is to answer the question of how the American family life changed in the 1970s. The subsequent step will be to see how these changes were shown in The Brady Bunch, a sitcom from the ‘70s, and in That ‘70s Show, a sitcom from the late ‘90s. In the 1970s the economy endured a severe downfall, set into motion by the oil embargo of 1973. The family also changed through the women’s liberation movement, persuading more and more women to join the labor market, making them able to provide for themselves. With the power to provide for themselves, women are more prone to divorce their husbands and take the children with them. Fathers lose their position as the breadwinner and hereby a bit of their authority. Children spend longer periods at home, mostly discovering who they are and developing themselves. These changes are almost invisible in The Brady Bunch which portrays a picture-perfect family without any real troubles. These changes permeate That ‘70s Show as they represent nearly every aspect of the decade through satire and parody. Keywords: Brady Bunch, That ‘70s Show, Family life, Feminism, 1970s, Sitcom. • Netflix Rides the Wave of Nostalgia with "Fuller House"
Winter TCA 2016: Netflix Rides the Wave of Nostalgia With "Fuller House" 01.17.2016 On the surface, The Ranch looks like a conventional sitcom for Ashton Kutcher, Danny Masterson and the rest of the cast. But it's a Netflix sitcom, and that means it's different. And not just in terms of the distribution model: The Ranch has a 20-episode order that's going to be split between two 10-episode releases throughout the year. "We're doing a very traditional [sitcom] format, with a live audience, but because we're working with Netflix we get to explore," said Ashton Kutcher as reported by Deadline. "You don't want something that's going to bleed 'fiction.' Netflix has given us the liberty to break [conventions] and we have gone after them hard." Sam Elliott and Debra Winger also star, and the show premieres April 1. Netflix's cash cow (among many) Orange is the New Black didn't offer any details about its forthcoming fourth season, other than the promise of new characters to the mix. Season four of Orange is the New Black arrives June 17. The ladies of Grace and Frankie, Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda, were a hoot, dispensing advice and lewdness in equal measure. Kauffman was equal parts resistant and hesitant to do a 9 to 5 reunion, but as always, there's a chance. "I will say there will never be a Friends reunion movie, but I won't say never about the Dolly Parton reunion," said creator Marta Kauffman. The ladies of Grace and Frankie were far more insistent.
