[Official Statement]. ......................... 26 1 Introduction By definition social movements reflect unique times in history. Just as societal issues shape social movements, these movements also shape the history of the times that spur them on. To fully understand a social movement’s mobilization strategies and goals, one must understand the specific point in history during which they take place (Gerbaudo, 2020). The Civil Rights and Black Lives Matter (BLM) movements are no exception. To fully grasp the implications of a movement the social and political climate that induce them must be understood. Predecessors of the BLM movement like the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the Civil Rights movement resulted in exponential increases in participation of minorities in labor unions and in grassroots mobilization, respectively. Most people assume the Civil Rights era began in the mid 1954 with the Brown v. Board of Education supreme court case. However, the civil rights movement was set into motion over a decade before then with the migration of millions of African Americans from rural Southern farming communities into larger industrial areas in the North and West. Black voters in northern states doubled, membership in the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People increased exponentially, and half a million black workers joined unions all in an effort to change race relations and to legitimize the struggles faced by African Americans in America (Korstad & Lichtenstein, 1988). For years scholars have studied this era and tried to categorize its organization, goals, and origins. In the 1960s and 1970s academia viewed the Civil Rights movement as a primarily political one, led by international activists, like Martin Luther King Jr., in national hubs for activism including Washington DC and Atlanta, Georgia. Initially, the movement’s main goal 2 was categorized as reaching political and judicial change. The frame of the era was shifted by scholars in the 1970s and 1980s who noted that protests, marches, and sit-ins were not only used to secure political change, but also for social victories and coalition building in black communities led by grassroots organizations. More recently, academics have been trying to incorporate the local, national, political, and social components of the movement into a newer more fully encompassing model (Lawson, 1991). This more intersectional and encompassing model should also be used when framing and studying the BLM movement, a modern descendent of both the NAACP and Civil Rights movement. From its inception, BLM has utilized social media as an important tool. In 2013, following the acquittal of George Zimmerman for the murder of Trayvon Martin, #BlackLivesMatter went viral across multiple social media platforms and would become the catalyst for an entire movement. The hashtag came to life offline in 2014 as supporters took it to the streets during the riots and protests in Ferguson, Missouri following the murder of another black man, Michael Brown Jr., by police (Rickford, 2016). The use of #BlackLivesMatter on social media posts allows for personalized and far-reaching public discourse. The accessibility of digital social platforms allows for large and diverse groups to come together to share information, personal experiences, and to mobilize under their cause (Mundt et al., 2018). The advantages of social media for these reasons became even more vital to the movement during the 2019-2020 COVID-19 pandemic. COVID-19 was first seen in Wuhan, China in late December of 2019, by March of 2020 the World Health Organization declared it a pandemic as the cases and death toll continued to rise worldwide (Kaya, 2020). The global COVID-19 health crisis halted life as we knew it, but social injustice, police brutality, and systemic racism showed no signs of stopping. While the 3 BLM movement predates COVID-19, the movement’s values were brought to the forefront due to clear disparities in the effect COVID-19 had on people of minority groups (Gerbaudo, 2020). Black Americans make up a disproportionately greater number of COVID-19 cases and deaths compared to other Americans (Millett et al., 2020). This stems from multiple factors that left African Americans more vulnerable to the pandemic. Black Americans are over-represented in transportation and service industry jobs, meaning many of them were “essential workers” and had more exposure to COVID-19. Connecticut There are three questions I find important to consider as the trial unfolds. These questions address the legal, moral and political legitimacy of any verdict in the trial. I offer them from my perspective as an Afro-Jewish philosopher and political thinker who studies oppression, justice and freedom. Technological Surveillance and the Spatial Struggle of Black Lives Matter Protests Research Thesis Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for graduation with research distinction in the undergraduate colleges of The Ohio State University by Eyako Heh The Ohio State University April 2021 Project Advisor: Professor Joel Wainwright, Department of Geography I Abstract This paper investigates the relationship between technological surveillance and the production of space. In particular, I focus on the surveillance tools and techniques deployed at Black Lives Matter protests and argue that their implementation engenders uneven outcomes concerning mobility, space, and power. To illustrate, I investigate three specific forms and formats of technological surveillance: cell-site simulators, aerial surveillance technology, and social media monitoring tools. These tools and techniques allow police forces to transcend the spatial-temporal bounds of protests, facilitating the arrests and subsequent punishment of targeted dissidents before, during, and after physical demonstrations. Moreover, I argue that their unequal use exacerbates the social precarity experienced by the participants of demonstrations as well as the racial criminalization inherent in the policing of majority Black and Brown gatherings. Through these technological mediums, law enforcement agents are able to shape the physical and ideological dimensions of Black Lives Matter protests. I rely on interdisciplinary scholarly inquiry and the on- the-ground experiences of Black Lives Matter protestors in order to support these claims. Leidner Mays Business School, Texas A&M University Baylor University ABSTRACT Digital activism provides new opportunities for social movement participants and social movement organizations (SMOs). Recent IS research has begun to touch on digital activism, defining it, exploring it, and building new theory to help understand it. This paper seeks to unpack digital activism through an exploratory literature review that provides descriptions, definitions, and categorizations. We provide a framework for digital activism by extending Milbrath’s (1965) hierarchy of political participation that divides activism into spectator, transitional, and gladiatorial activities. Using this framework, we identify ten activities of digital activism that are represented in the literature. These include digital spectator activities: clicktivism, metavoicing, assertion; digital transitional activities: e-funding, political consumerism, digital petitions, and botivism; and digital gladiatorial activities: data activism, exposure, and hacktivism. Last, we analyze the activities in terms of participants, SMOs, individuals who are targeted by the activity, and organizations that are targeted by the activity. We highlight four major implications and offer four meta-conjectures on the mechanisms of digital activism and their resulting impacts, and reveal a new construct where participants digitally organize yet lack an identifying cause, which we label connective emotion.     Health Slacktivism on Social Media: Predictors and Effects Chih-Wei Hu Annenberg School for Communication, University of Southern California, USA [email protected] Abstract. The present study examined predictors, moderators, and effects of health slacktivism, which is characterized as individuals’ effortless acts in supporting health causes primarily through Internet and social media. Findings revealed that issue-involvement and self-presentation were two underlying predictors of slacktivism. Specifically, ingratiation self-presentation was found to be a significant predictor of slacktivism among slacktivists, while enhancement self-presentation predicted slacktivism among activists. Results imply that strategic impression-management types were associated with health slacktivism among particular sub-groups. It is also found that health slacktivists and activists differed by relational connection. Slacktivists tended to be people who were remotely related to the health issue advocated, while activists were people who had closer relational connection to the health issue. Health consciousness, however, was not a significant predictor of slacktivism nor a differentiating factor between slacktivists and activists. Consistent with the Transtheoretical Model, slacktivism was found to have positive effects among participants in terms of awareness, psychological wellbeing, behavioral intention and behavior adoption. Individuals’ low-threshold engagement as slacktivism also predicted their high-threshold engagement (activism), implying that getting involved in slacktivism does not substitute for offline forms of participation but may increase the possibility of offline engagement instead.     What is Police Violence? A plain language booklet about anti-Black racism, police violence, and what you can do to stop it 1 Introduction We are writing this booklet in June of 2020. Right now, there are protests all over the country about racism and police violence. We wrote this booklet in plain language so as many people as possible can understand the protests. There is a lot to know about racism and police violence. We can’t talk about everything in this short booklet. We will tell you where to learn more. And, we will work on more resources. This booklet is just to get you started. Racism is when people are treated unfairly because of their race. Anti-Black racism is when Black people are treated unfairly because they are Black. People can do racist things. For example: Byron is Black. He wants to rent a house. Tyler is white. He owns a house, and wants to rent it out. Byron comes to see Tyler’s house. Tyler lies to Byron because Byron is Black. Tyler tells Byron that the house is not up for rent. Tyler only wants to rent his house to white people. Tyler was being racist when he lied to Byron. Society does racist things. For example: There are many times where a Black person and a white person do the same crime. Usually, the Black person will go to jail for longer. The white person might not even go to jail! The way our society deals with crime is racist. It is set up to hurt Black people.
