RESUMEN Se describe Berosus elsae, una nueva especie de la familia Hydrophilidae, en un sistema hidroecológico antropogénico (artificial) altamente contaminado de la Península de Araya. Se ilustra el habitus dorsal, órganos genitales y otros escleritos de interés diagnóstico con una breve descripción del microhábitat anpogeno o lugar de recolección de la nueva especie. Berosus elsae sp. nov., representa el primer registro del género Berosus Leach, para la región nororiental de Venezuela, siendo además la primera especie del género reportada para la franja caribeña de Sudamérica. Por su hábitat y distribución geográfica, Berosus elsae sp. nov. estaría más emparentada con las especies Centroamericanas y del Caribe, que con las especies de Berosus descritas para Sudamérica. Habitat Type and Permanence Determine Local Aquatic Invertebrate Community Structure in the Madrean Sky Islands Michael T. Lytle Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon Abstract—Aquatic environments in the Madrean Sky Islands (MSI) consist of a matrix of perennial and intermittent stream segments, seasonal ponds, and human-built cattle trough habitats that support a di- verse suite of aquatic macroinvertebrates. Although environmental conditions and aquatic communities are generally distinct in lotic and lentic habitats, MSI streams are characterized by isolated perennial pools for much of the year, and thus seasonally occur as lentic environments. In this study, we compared habitat characteristics and Coleoptera and Hemiptera assemblages of stream pools with those of true lentic habi- tats (seasonal ponds and cattle troughs) across the MSI. We identified 150 species across the 38 sites, and despite superficial similarities in habitat characteristics, seasonal ponds and stream pools in the MSI support distinct aquatic insect communities. Stream-exclusive species included many long-lived species with poor dispersal abilities, while pond-exclusive species tended to have rapid development times and strong dispersal abilities. We suggest that, in addition to perennial streams, seasonal aquatic habitats should also be a focus of conservation planning in the MSI. JAQUES The Hydrophilidae, or water scavenger beetles, received their name from the genus Hydrophilus, a word of Greek origin mean ing, "a lover of water." They are usually found in ponds and streams. Several genera are, however, terrestrial in habit, living in moist earth and in the dung of cattle and horses, where they are said to feed upon the larvae of dipterous insects. The family con sists of some 1,700 species, mostly tropical, but well represented in the temperate regions. -

Larval morphology and head chaetotaxy are described for two genera of the tribe Berosini, Berosus Leach, 1817 and Regimbartia Zaitzev, 1908, based on reared and fi eld-collected larvae of Berosus (Berosus) japonicus Sharp, 1873 and Regimbartia attenuata (Fabricius, 1801). We describe and illustrate the general morphology and head chaetotaxy of all three instars of both species. We review and discuss an ecological character, which is an adaptation to benthic lifestyle in Berosus. Berosus larvae do not have air-bubbles in alimentary canal, whereas majority of hydrophilid larvae have air-bubbles. Absence of the bubbles results in loss of buoyancy and would be an adaptation in two different ecological trends: benthic and swimming lifestyles. A detailed comparison of head chaetotaxy of both genera is provided. Chaetotaxy of Berosus and Regimbartia are not largely different, therefore benthic lifestyle will not strongly affect chaetotaxy. We also provide information of knowledge about immature stages of the tribe Berosini and provide the identifi cation key to larvae of all fi ve genera of the tribe. -

Introduction Thomas Edward Booth established the Booth Museum in 1874 as home for his burgeoning collection of mounted British birds in ‘natural surroundings’. The Museum he left to the local authority on his death in 1890 remained relatively unaltered through both world wars, although the rear office did become a store for some of the entomological collections formerly housed in Brighton Museum & Art gallery. With the arrival of John Morley as Director of the Royal Pavilion and Museums in 1968, a root and branch revitalisation of Brighton’s museum service began, resulting in the transformation of a mediocre provincial museum into a service of national and international importance. If this was achieved through the development of collections and exhibitions in the fine and decorative arts, it nevertheless resulted in the establishment of the Booth Museum, not as Booth’s original vision of a home for his unique collection but as a proto- regional museum encompassing the whole of natural history, not just birds. -

Four genera and seven species belonging to families Hydrophilidae and Hydraenidae were found. Three species, Berosus luridus (Linnaeus, 1761), Limnebius nitidus (Marsham, 1802) and Ochthebius nilssoni (Hebauer, 1986) are recorded for the first time from Iran.
