The 2010-11 Ski Idaho and Ski the Northwest Rockies Fifth Grade Passport is a non-transferable document which entitles the 5th grader to whom it is issued to obtain all-day lift tickets, subject to the terms and conditions set forth below, at participating member resorts during the 2010-11 season. The following Ski Idaho and Ski the Northwest Rockies ski areas are participating for the 2010-11 season: 49 Degrees North, Bald Mountain, Bogus Basin, Brundage, Cottonwood Butte, Kelly Canyon, Grand Targhee, Little Ski Hill, Lookout Pass, Lost Trail, Magic Mountain, Mission Ridge, Mt. Spokane, Pebble Creek, Schweitzer Mountain, Silver Mountain, Soldier Mountain and Sun Valley. All Ski Idaho and Ski the Northwest Rockies participating ski areas reserve the right to withdraw or join the program at any time. 2. The Passport is valid at all participating Ski Idaho and Ski the Northwest Rockies member ski areas during the 2010-11 season except on the blackout dates identified by each ski area during the 2010-11 season. 3. The Passport may be used to obtain no more than three (3) all-day lift tickets at each participating Ski Idaho and Ski the Northwest Rockies ski areas during the 2010-11 season subject to the resort blackout dates. 4. The Passport or use of the Passport or of lift tickets obtained with the Passport may not be transferred or resold to any other person, including family members or relatives. It is a violation of Idaho and Washington law to resell lift tickets. Ski Idaho and Ski the Northwest Rockies will immediately revoke a Passport if the holder transfers use of the Passport or of any lift ticket obtained with the Passport to another person, for monetary consideration or otherwise. 5. Ski Idaho and Ski the Northwest Rockies will revoke and cancel a Passport without notice for any misuse. Passport holders and their parent or legal guardian are responsible for proper use of the Passport at all times. In the event of Passport misuse and cancellation, Ski Idaho and Ski the Northwest Rockies may recover damages to Ski Idaho and Ski the Northwest Rockies and/or to participating Ski Idaho and Ski the Northwest Rockies member resorts arising from Passport misuse, including reasonable attorneys fees. 6. Ski Idaho and Ski the Northwest Rockies reserves the right to modify or cancel the Passport program at any time and to modify or cancel all valid Passports at any time with or without notice. Ski Idaho and Ski the Northwest Rockies is not responsible for expenses incurred or opportunities foregone by Passport holders if Ski Idaho or Ski the Northwest Rockies modifies or cancels the Passport program. 7. If a Passport is lost or stolen, notify Ski Idaho and Ski the Northwest Rockies immediately. Participating resort lift ticket offices will not assist with lost or stolen Passports. Ski Idaho and Ski the Northwest Rockies reserves the right to make case by case determinations concerning replacement of lost or stolen Passports, but in no event will a lost or stolen Passport be replaced without collecting a $20 processing fee. 8. All Passport holders agree to comply with all rules and regulations of participating Ski Idaho and Ski the Northwest Rockies member resorts and with all other applicable laws and regulations. 9. An individual is eligible for the Ski Idaho and Ski the Northwest Rockies Fifth Grade Passport only once. Home School 5th graders are eligible only once. Individuals repeating all or a portion of the 5th grade do not qualify for a repeat Ski Idaho and Ski the Northwest Rockies Fifth Grade Passport. 10. If a Fifth Grade Passport applicant provides any false or inaccurate information in his or her application, a Passport will not be issued. Any Passport issued to a 5th grader who has provided false or inaccurate information will be revoked. 11. All information provided in this application is subject to verification by Ski Idaho and Ski the Northwest Rockies. All information provided in this application becomes the property of Ski Idaho and Ski the Northwest Rockies. Information provided by Passport applicants may be used by Ski Idaho and Ski the Northwest Rockies and its member ski areas for verification and market research purposes.     September 17, 2019 PRESIDENT’S LETTER A Commitment to Professional Development An efficient professional organization exists to serve its members. As Janet Franz wrote in our March 2019 newsletter (posted to NASJA.org, NASJA can trace its roots back to late 1962, days when most press members wrote about snowsports for print outlets. Now that the number of media outlets have grown exponentially, although not particularly remuneratively, the need for professional development is as strong as ever, particularly in regards to pitching stories that will resonate with editors, and by extension, readers, viewers or listeners. To that end, earlier this month we held a Communicators Camp during the New England Summit in Sunday River for 60 industry professionals, and plan further professional development during our Nov. 15 meeting in Boston at the Seaport World Trade Center, held in conjunction with the Boston.com Ski & Snowboard Expo. Broadcast journalism teacher and Boston Globe sportswriter Eric Wilbur will discuss how to more effectively pitch stories to editors. It’s our hope that through professional development we can make snowsports journalism less a labor of love, and more profitable for our members. We thank our corporate members for identifying newsworthy elements of their businesses, and we thank our more seasoned members for sharing their expertise in communicating the role snowsports plays in enriching the lives of millions of North Americans. Finally, don’t forget to consider entering or recommending to another snowsports journalist that he or she enter the 2019 Harold S. Hirsch Awards, the “Oscars” of snowports journalism. For some it's not soon enough. For these nine athletes it was a teaser to be on snow at Mt. Hood this past week. Five days skiing on a glacier, lunches on the mountain, swimming, hiking, team-building and camping-in with friends. Sounds like a lot of fun, but all that aside it's a privilege for each of these skiers as they've worked hard to be there. Whatever the end- goal is for gate training, video review and early mornings to start it off; this experience for the athletes won't be forgoen or dismissed. That's a win in the eyes of Coach Dave Rosen who's goal was to share the same experience he fondly remembers as a young skier himself with his athletes. Keep reading for other happenings and announcements from McCall Winter Sports Club; including the naming of our Alpine Ski Race Program Director and Head Coach, Ski Bum Scramble, Pints for a Cause, athlete scholarships, IMD race schedule and other winter teasers!     AVALANCHE ACCIDENT- Boardman Pass SUBMITTED BY: Sawtooth National Forest Avalanche Center LOCATION: 15 Miles northwest of Fairfield, ID DATE: January 28, 2010 SUMMARY: 1 snowmobiler caught, buried and killed SYNOPSIS: On January 28, 2010, a group of five backcountry snowmobilers were riding near Boardman Pass in the Soldier Mountains of southern Idaho. This area is approximately 15 miles northwest of Fairfield, Idaho and is often accessed from the popular Chimney Creek trailhead. Two riders were climbing the west side of Pt. 9538 when a slide started above the uppermost rider. A third rider watched as moving snow overtook the first rider and the second rider turned to the climber’s left and out of the slide. The slide carried the victim over a thousand vertical feet downhill and buried him four to five feet deep next to his snowmachine; the debris continued several hundred vertical feet further downhill. The party quickly regrouped, located the burial site with a beacon and dug deep enough to provide an airway within an estimated 25 minutes. CPR was unsuccessful. The SS-AMu-D3-R2 avalanche was 2 to 3 feet deep, approximately 300ft wide and ran over 1300 vertical feet. Prior to the accident, the Soldier Mountains had received over 3” of Snow Water Equivalent and roughly three feet of snow since January 12. Moderate to strong southerly and westerly winds had accompanied the snowfall, with wind speeds peaking five days before the accident. The mid-January snowfall fell on an unusually weak layer that had been a concern the entire season. A widespread natural avalanche cycle had occurred in much of the advisory area the weekend prior to the accident, and a smaller avalanche had claimed the life of a skier a week earlier; the local and regional press had covered that accident extensively.
