Abstract The extent to which the food retail environment, including the availability, price and quality of foodstuffs, has an impact on what people eat remains unclear. This study aimed to determine whether the retail environment, of a household‟s usual main food store or of the area surrounding the home, is independently associated with the dietary intake of individual householders. The study employed a cross-sectional design and comprised simultaneous surveys of all retail outlets selling foodstuffs, and of households and the individuals living in them in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK in 2000-2002. 5044 adults aged 16-97 years living in 3153 households provided data, including a 134-item food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and detailed socio-demographic information. Detailed data on 33 commonly consumed foods was obtained from 560 food stores. -

DETERMINATION OF MERGER NOTIFICATION M/17/058 – MUSGRAVE / WHELAN CENTRA Section 21 of the Competition Act 2002 Proposed acquisition by Musgrave Limited of sole control of six trading companies of Whelan Centra Group Limited which trade as “Centra” grocery retail stores in the Wicklow area. Dated 7 December 2017 Introduction 1. On 3 November 2017, in accordance with section 18(1)(a) of the Competition Act 2002, as amended (“the Act”), the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (“the Commission”) received a notification of a proposed acquisition (“the Proposed Transaction”) whereby Musgrave Limited (“Musgrave”) would acquire the entire issued share capital and thus sole control of each of six trading companies of Whelan Centra Group Limited (“the Vendor”) which trade as “Centra” grocery retail stores in the Wicklow area, namely Dreamcaster Limited, Two Hoots Limited, The Ferry Store Limited, Ballybrack Stores Limited, DKC Stores Limited and Never Better Limited (collectively “the Target Companies”). The Proposed Transaction 2. The Proposed Transaction is to be implemented by way of six share purchase agreements (collectively “the Agreements”) each dated 1 November 2017 between the Vendor and Musgrave.1 Pursuant to the Agreements, Musgrave will acquire the entire issued share capital and thus sole control of the Target Companies from the Vendor. 1 There is a separate sales purchase agreement for each of the six target companies. 1 Merger Notification No. M/17/058 – Musgrave/Whelan Centra 3. Village Shops Newsletter - Spring 2017 News from Local Shops: Appleton Shop Has a Re-vamp. On 29th Feb, Appleton-with- Eaton Village shop held a meeting in the Village Hall for volunteers, local users and potential users of the shop, to come and hear all about the exiting changes happening and to make their comments on the changes. Over 100 people turned up! The new improved shop opened on Saturday 8th April. They now have a new inside coffee area, new product ranges (including more locally produced products), increased chilled and frozen stock and a new ‘Epos System’.The refit is costing around £15k, with a £6k grant from the Post Office really helping out. I bet there is a real buzz in in the village… A New Drinks Cabinet for Hanney Community Shop. Hanneys volunteer shop manager, Hazel Abraham, applied to the Post Office Community Branch Fund for a new drinks cabinet. As you can see it is eye catching. Cold drinks sell well to school children and cyclists. For those shops who have a Post Office in your shop, There is still plenty of money in the Post Office Community Branch Fund which you can apply to in order to develop and improve your Post Office business. Example of improvements people have made include a tea room, improved signage, flooring, shelving lighting. Most applications are below £10,000 and sometimes £2,000 and below for outreach services, however it is possible to apply for more than this. SandpiperCI Retail Limited (Sandpiper), part of the Sandpiper Group, proposes to acquire a number of the Jersey stores of Spar (Channel Islands) Limited together with its subsidiaries (Spar). The transaction has been notified to the Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority (JCRA) for approval pursuant to Article 21 of the Competition (Jersey) Law 2005 (the Law). 2. The JCRA has determined that, subject to meeting the commitment offered by Sandpiper in relation to the Sandpiper store at First Tower, the proposed acquisition will not lead to a substantial lessening of competition in any relevant market and hereby approves the acquisition by Sandpiper.
