Hospital Ratings Heart Surgery The data come from the Society of Thoracic Surgeons for hospitals that have agreed to share their data with us. BYPASS sURgERY RATINGS reflects a hospital’s performance in isolated coronary artery bypass graft surgery, including the open-heart approach and less invasive versions. Overall score is a composite of four measures: survival (percentage of patients who leave the hospital and survive at least 30 days after surgery), complications (percentage of patients who avoid the most serious complications, including needing a second operation, developing a deep chest infection, suffering a stroke or kidney failure, and requiring prolonged ventilation), best surgical technique (percentage of patients who receive at least one graft from an internal mammary artery, located under the breastbone, which improves survival), and right drugs (percentage of patients who receive beta-blockers before and after surgery to control blood pressure and heart rhythm, aspirin to prevent blood clots, and a drug after surgery to lower LDL (bad) cholesterol). ValVE REplaCEMEnt RATINGS reflects a hospital’s performance in surgical aortic valve replacement. Does not include data for trans- catheter aortic valve replacement, though the StS has started to collect it. Overall score is a composite of two measures: survival (percentage of patients who leave the hospital and survive at least 30 days after surgery) and complications (percentage of patients who avoid the most serious complications, which are the same as for bypass). all data were adjusted based on the health of patients. Still, limitations of such adjustments can make direct comparisons difficult. MoRE inFoRMATION For details on our methodology, go to www.Consumerreports.org/cro/howweratehospitals.

  • 2016 Community Health Needs Assessment Mount Carmel East 6001 East Broad Street Columbus, Ohio 43213
2016 Community Health Needs Assessment Mount Carmel East 6001 East Broad Street Columbus, Ohio 43213 In 1972, Mount Carmel East was completed on the 140 acre farm purchased by The Sisters of Mount Carmel in 1908. With the busiest adult emergency department in greater Columbus, our hospital is growing right along with the east side communities it serves. Our hospital offers a wide range of services through a number of specialty centers and has made an ongoing commitment to technology that has helped set the facility apart. So has our surgical expertise, which is so respected that knee replacement surgeries from Mount Carmel East are broadcast live to students and visitors at Ohio's Center of Science and Industry. With growing demands for heart and maternity care on the east side, Mount Carmel responded by creating the Mount Carmel East Heart Center and Mount Carmel East Maternity Center. The Heart Center features cath labs, an electrophysiology lab, a cardiovascular neuro services center, a post-surgery ICU, a coronary care unit and a step-down unit. The Maternity Center includes labor and delivery rooms, cesarean operating rooms, antepartum rooms and a Level III special care nursery. Among the other state-of-the-art facilities at our Columbus, Ohio hospital are multiple intensive care units, an endoscopy lab, a neuroscience unit with epilepsy monitoring beds and the Bruce E. Siegel Center for Health Education. Mission We serve together in the spirit of the Gospel as a compassionate and transforming healing presence within our communities. Vision As a mission-driven, innovative health organization, we will become a leader in improving the health of our communities and each person we serve.

Case Study BODYTOM® PORTABLE, FULL-BODY, 32-SLICE CT SCANNER USE AT MOUNT CARMEL EAST HOSPITAL Improving accuracy and patient outcome in neurosurgery by bringing full CT capabilities to the OR THE CUSTOMER Mount Carmel East Hospital in Columbus, Ohio is well-known for its surgical expertise and commitment to using the latest technology to improve patient outcome. With this drive to be on the cutting edge of surgical technologies, Mount Carmel East became the first hospital in Ohio to feature the BodyTom portable CT scanner in its operating room. Director of the Division of Neurosurgery, Dr. Bradford Mullin, was integral in the decision to utilize the innovative CT scanner. THE CHALLENGES Prior to owning the BodyTom, neurosurgeons at Mount Carmel East were using an O-arm for spinal fusion cases. “With the O-arm, the imaging was not anywhere near as clear. The O-arm is really a fancy C-arm from a lot of different directions that’s reconstructed into three dimensions. You lose bony detail, and as the patient’s body mass index increases, the image degrades more and more. With the BodyTom, you can see edges much better. It has no limitation in number of levels that it can image, where the O-arm does.” Dr. Bradford Mullin, Director of the Division of Neurosurgery Mount Carmel East’s focus on the continuous improvement of patient outcome and reducing the possibility of errors were also driving forces behind the search for a new intraoperative technology. “We had used the O-arm quite extensively for spinal fusion cases.

But you, through your generosity, make that care possible. Because of you Mount Carmel is able to fulfill our mission of being a compassionate and transforming healing presence within our community. Over the past year more than $5.6 million of your donations to the Foundation has been invested to support critical programs that change people’s lives every day in significant ways. That means you’re making a difference for people from all walks of life, including new mothers and babies through the Welcome Home Program Fund, nursing students through your contributions to Mount Carmel College of Nursing, terminal patients when you support the Hospice and Palliative Care Fund, and a host of others you’ll find inside this year’s Annual Report. As Mount Carmel presses forward with the relocation of inpatient services from Mount Carmel West to the new hospital at Grove City, we remain committed to serving the people of Franklinton — where Mount Carmel has its roots dating back to 1886. The $46 million investment in the campus there will benefit the community through outpatient, outreach and other services, as well as a freestanding emergency department. Enhancements to the campus will also support Mount Carmel College of Nursing — which is seeing record enrollment — and its mission to enable students to answer their life’s calling to become professional nurses.
