As it comprises an immense diversity of writing done in such mainstream sub-genres as detective, police, and serial killer fiction, as well as actual noir, I will investigate both the contrasts and the crossovers between said sub-genres. -

These novels are easily identifiable as belonging to the genre of crime fiction, despite the author’s claims that he did not intend this to be the case, and they conform quite readily to the general sub-category of police procedural. As well as winning numerous awards for crime fiction, the Rebus novels are also tremendously successful in commercial terms and Rankin is cited on his official website as being the best-selling author of detective fiction in the UK.1 The Rebus novels, now translated into 27 languages, focus on police investigations which are carefully set within a national, temporal and socioeconomic context, that of contemporary postindustrial Scotland. -

Keith Dixon Writing on the Borderline: The Works of William McIlvanney William Mcllvanney has been variously described as "the most out standing of modern Scottish novelists,,,l compared to George Douglas Brown, whose House with the Green Shutters marked a historical turning point in Scottish fiction, and accused of indulging in sentimental proletar ian romanticism.2 The dominant view, however, at least among literary journalists, would seem to be that with the publication of his third novel, Docherty, in 1975, and his subsequent writing, McIlvanney has made a lasting mark on Scottish literature. If this is so then it is indeed a break through, since McIlvanney is the first major Scottish writer to have ven tured successfully across the class borderline (in his case, he simply stayed put) and to have concentrated in his writing on the experience of the Scot tish working-class. -

Its thesis is that patriarchal images of manhood and mythical representations of the Scottish hard man have been instrumental in creating a perception of failed masculinity and the resulting identity crisis of male protagonists. The development of Scottish male characters throughout the century is studied in eight primary novels written between 1901 and 1993. Various secondary novels, texts and articles pertaining to the study of Scottish literature and/or gender studies are also used to emphasise the points being made. The essay begins with a chapter on the overview of the history of Scotland, Scottish fiction, and the major thematic breakthroughs of men’s studies in the twentieth-century. The focus is then turned towards the eight novels: George Douglas Brown’s The House of the Green Shutters, John MacDougall Hay’s Gillespie, Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s Grey Granite, James Kelman’s The Busconductor Hines, Jeff Torrington’s Swing Hammer Swing!, Irvine Welsh’s Trainspotting, Ron Butlin’s The Sound of My Voice and William McIlvanney’s Docherty. Finally, the possible future of the hard man in Scottish fiction is briefly discussed.
