The show site is within the Cabarrus County and City of Concord servicing area. “Exhibitors should follow their veterinarian's recommendation to assure their dogs are free of internal and external parasites, any communicable diseases, and have appropriate vaccinations.” CERTIFICATION Permission has been granted by the American Kennel Club for the holding of these events under American Kennel Club rules and regulations. DiNardo, Executive Secretary Field Spaniel Society of America - March 26, 2020 - 3 AKC Sanctioned 4 & Under 6 Months Puppy Competition Entry Fee: $25.00 per puppy One combined class, not divided by sex, will be offered for puppies that are at least four (4) months of age but less than six (6) months of age on the date of the competition. A foreign born dog may enter this class if they are registered in the country of origin. Best of Breed and Best of Opposite Sex to Best of Breed will be chosen. An AKC registration number or AKC litter number is required for entries. Dogs are required to be vaccinated (including rabies) in accordance with their veterinarian's protocol in order to avoid inadvertent transmission of illness by/to puppies not yet fully immunized. Dogs that are owned or co-owned by a professional handler may compete in this class, but must be handled by a non-professional handler. Professional handlers are defined as any person who belongs or has belonged to a professional handlers' organization, distributed rate cards, or otherwise advertised or represented themselves as handling dogs for pay within the last five years. Dogs may not be exhibited by current assistants and household members of a professional handler. A current assistant is defined as anyone employed by a professional handler on a full-time basis, or, assisting a professional handler at the show or any show during the cluster/weekend. Current assistants that are eligible to compete in Junior Showmanship (meet age & amateur status requirements) may participate in 4 & Under 6 Months Puppy Competition. AKC Rules in Dealing with Misconduct will be applicable to any person and dog entered at this competition. All applicable rules found in Rules Applying to Dog Shows will govern the conduct of this competition unless these regulations state otherwise. Exhibitors should plan on opening the mouth of their puppy for the judges. Breed standard disqualifications such as color, height, weight or dentition shall not be a point of consideration in the judging process for this 4 & under 6 Months Puppy in Show Competition. Potential owners of Sporting dogs need to realize that most require regular, invigorating exercise. The breeds of the AKC Sporting Group were all developed to assist hunters of feathered game. These “sporting dogs” (also referred to as gundogs or bird dogs) are subdivided by function—that is, how they hunt. They are spaniels, pointers, setters, retrievers, and the European utility breeds.     The English Cocker At Home and Abroad Geraldine R. Dodge It’s journey down the centuries as a Spaniel, a Cocker and finally a recognized breed. Mrs. Dodge (1882 – 1973) was the first Honorary Member of the ECSCA. Before this, however, she had held every office in the Club and was one of its original founders. She can be considered the patron and protector of the breed in the U.S.A. as it was through her efforts and sponsorship of extensive research into pedigrees which convinced the American Kennel Club to grant the English Cocker Spaniel separate breed status in its Stud Book late in 1946 at a time when the American Cocker was at the height of its popularity. She imported many excellent specimens which helped strengthen the breed in this country, and many of her “Giralda” English Cockers served as foundations for other kennels. To many of the more seasoned fanciers he may have seemed like an interloper – here comes a Cocker Spaniel nosing his way in where already there is another perfectly good Cocker Spaniel! We might have answered like the man who said “No thank you,” he didn’t need that book because he had a book. But of course there are different books on the same subject, just as there are different breeds from the same rootstock, and in truth we need them all. In order to understand whence came the English Cocker, let us go back to the original Spaniel, one of the oldest families of the dog world mainly responsible for the sporting gundogs of the day.

BRIEF HISTORICAL SUMMARY : Gundogs that are trained to find live game and/or to retrieve game that has been shot and wounded is a very old tradition, not the least in Great Britain. The Field Spaniel belongs to the category of Flushing Spaniels that earlier was called “Land Spaniels”. - Although Spaniels are capable of doing the same work as Retrievers. The Field Spaniel is a product of crossing the one-time Sussex Springer and the Cocker Spaniel in the late nineteenth century. Twice, the breed nearly disappeared, firstly when fashion fads all but ruined the breed in the early 1900s and, secondly, when in the 1950s breed numbers were so small that the Kennel Club withdrew championship status, this being restored in 1969 only after determined efforts by breeders to maintain the breed. Still not a popular breed by modern standards, but nevertheless makes a good companion for the country dweller. GENERAL APPEARANCE : Well balanced, noble, upstanding sporting Spaniel, built for activity and endurance. BEHAVIOUR / TEMPERAMENT : Unusually docile, active, sensitive, independent. HEAD : Conveys the impression of high breeding, character and nobility.
