S. de Medeiros1 & Cassandra G. Extavour1,2* Over the course of evolution, organism size has diversified markedly. Changes in size are thought to have occurred because of developmental, morphological and/or ecological pressures. To perform phylogenetic tests of the potential effects of these pressures, here we generated a dataset of more than ten thousand descriptions of insect eggs, and combined these with genetic and life-history datasets. We show that, across eight orders of magnitude of variation in egg volume, the relationship between size and shape itself evolves, such that previously predicted global patterns of scaling do not adequately explain the diversity in egg shapes. We show that egg size is not correlated with developmental rate and that, for many insects, egg size is not correlated with adult body size. Instead, we find that the evolution of parasitoidism and aquatic oviposition help to explain the diversification in the size and shape of insect eggs. Our study suggests that where eggs are laid, rather than universal allometric constants, underlies the evolution of insect egg size and shape. Size is a fundamental factor in many biological processes. The size of an 526 families and every currently described extant hexapod order24 organism may affect interactions both with other organisms and with (Fig. 1a and Supplementary Fig. 1). We combined this dataset with the environment1,2, it scales with features of morphology and physi- backbone hexapod phylogenies25,26 that we enriched to include taxa ology3, and larger animals often have higher fitness4. -

Eggs of Hemiptera-Heteroptera are exceedingly diverse in form. They vary from an oval, globular, or cylindrical shape to all sorts of modifications. Some eggs glisten in golden lustre or have other dainty coloring; many are ornamented with delicate, curious patterns, with short spines and long hair-like appendages. This strange appearance of the eggs makes their study very fascinating. Naturalists of former time have already called attention to these beautiful creations of nature, but if is to the credit of the investigators of our day that we have a more profound knowledge, in a morphological and biological sense, of the meaning and the various functions of some organs and appendages attached to these eggs. Leuckart in his famous essay on the eggs of insects, published in Mueller's Archiv fiir Anatomic und Physiologic, 1855, considers certain peculiarly shaped organs about the upper pole of hemipterous eggs as a micropyle apparatus; he be- lieved these had an opening through which the sperma- tozoa enter in order to ferti- lize the egg. He terms these organs seminal cups (Samen- becher). They are either microscopical in size or large enough to be seen even by the naked eye. Leuckart dis- covered five different types, FIG. i. * which could be divided into two groups. In one group of eggs these organs stand free and erect on the outer surface around the rim towards the upper to the egg-pole; in the other group of eggs they are attached inner side of a band-like extension of the rim. -

Crespi & Abbot: Evolution of Kleptoparasitism 147 THE BEHAVIORAL ECOLOGY AND EVOLUTION OF KLEPTOPARASITISM IN AUSTRALIAN GALL THRIPS BERNARD CRESPI AND PATRICK ABBOT1 Behavioural Ecology Research Group, Department of Biological Sciences Simon Fraser University, Burnaby BC V5A 1S6 Canada 1Current address: Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, University of Arizona ABSTRACT We used a combination of behavioral-ecological and molecular-phylogenetic data to analyze the origin and diversification of kleptoparasitic (gall-stealing) thrips in the genus Koptothrips, which comprises four described species that invade and breed in galls induced by species of Oncothrips and Kladothrips on Australian Acacia. The ge- nus Koptothrips is apparently monophyletic and not closely related to its hosts. Two of the species, K. dyskritus and K. flavicornis, each appears to represent a suite of closely-related sibling species or host races. Three of the four Koptothrips species are facultatively kleptoparasitic, in that females can breed within damaged, open galls by enclosing themselves within cellophane-like partitions. Facultative kleptoparasitism may have served as an evolutionary bridge to the obligately kleptoparasitic habit found in K. flavicornis. Evidence from phylogenetics, and Acacia host-plant relation- ships of the kleptoparasites and the gall-inducers, suggests that this parasite-host system has undergone some degree of cospeciation, such that speciations of Kopto- thrips have tracked the speciations of the gall-inducers. Quantification of kleptopar- asitism rates indicates that Koptothrips and other enemies represent extremely strong selective pressures on most species of gall-inducers. Although the defensive soldier morphs found in some gall-inducing species can successfully defend against Koptothrips invasion, species with soldiers are still subject to high rates of successful kleptoparasite attack. -

Feeding behavioural studies of many exclusivelypredatory species exhibit c1earcut stimuli-response mediated sequences and these can be categorised into distinct sub-units like: search and location of prey ....approach and attack: of prey ....immobilisation of prey ....transportation of prey to safe place ....consumption of prey. These feeding behavioural activities differ among reduviids particularly with respect to prey types. These bugs are endowed with many structural, physiological and behavioural adaptations for efficient predation. The ovipositional behaviour of reduviids in different habitats also shows considerable variation and their reproductive strategies include selection of suitable sites to assure successful emergence and development of young ones and so far very few egg predators and egg parasites have been reported for these terrestrial insects. Introduction The family Reduviidae is one of the terrestrial groups of bugs well represented in tropical and subtropical regions ofthe world. They are known to colonise a wide variety ofhabitats, such as from under stones, on low herbage or lower foliage or on trees, to the most unusual ones like ant-hills, termitaria,cobwebs, bird nests, rat holes and human dwellings. Naturally, they exhibit a wide range ofstructural, physiological and behavioural adaptations for an exclusive predatory habit, feeding on a variety of arthropods, including millipedes, termites, bugs, beetles, caterpillars, ants, bees etc. Members ofthe Triatominae alone have specialised for haematophagy, engorging the blood of birds and mammals. -

Traps were placed within the canopy and understory of mature oak trees (Quercus spp.) with collection cups placed 18–23 m above ground level (AGL), and 0.3–0.5 m AGL, respectively. Traps were baited with ethanol to target ambrosia beetles (Curculionidae: Scolytinae) in one experiment, ethanol + syn-2,3-hexanediol + racemic 3-hydroxyhexan-2-one + racemic 3-hydroxyoctan-2-one to target hardwood woodborers (Cerambycidae) in a second experiment, and α-pinene + racemic ipsenol + racemic ipsdienol to target pine bark beetles (Curculionidae) and woodborers (Cerambycidae) in a third experiment. -
