The Search Group | Carney, Sandoe & Associates 2 [email protected] | www.carneysandoe.com THE SCHOOL On June 27, 1821, William B. Kelley, Nathaniel Norris, and 17 associates received a charter for New Hampton Academy in order to provide a general secondary school for local boys and girls and for others who wished to board. Today, New Hampton School has it all: IB Diploma Programme, individualized academic coaching, Apple Distinguished School technology, engaged faculty who are good company, friendly students, and much more. Thirty countries and 27 states are represented in a student body where classmates genuinely care about one another. All talents, groups, and contributions are valued. New Hampton students reach for their dreams, taking full advantage of the school’s outstanding programs and opportunities. Their time is filled with great pride and purpose, balancing work and play in a welcoming global community that develops one’s voice, confidence, and vision. A talented and well-educated faculty are by students’ sides to help them succeed and move forward in life. Ninety-five percent of faculty members live on campus and are expected to teach, coach, serve in a residential house, and lead co-curricular activities. Adult availability and a student-faculty ratio of 5:1 allow students time for spontaneous encounters and for the exchange of ideas or issues. There are 67 faculty and administrators; the faculty is gender-balanced; and 60% hold advanced degrees. The faculty is unpretentious and collegial, and they are intentional in their best service to students. Students experience 24-7 familiar relationships that make school like a second home. The advisor program enhances these relationships by creating a foundation for all manner of student support, counseling, and guidance. New Hampton is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and the International Baccalaureate Organization. The Search Group | Carney, Sandoe & Associates 3 [email protected] | www.carneysandoe.com ACADEMICS New Hampton’s individualized curriculum allows students to find the perfect mix of challenging courses and project-based experiences to achieve their highest academic achievement. Innovative teaching and exciting technology all engage students fully in a learning process that focuses on building a solid foundation of 21st century skills for academic success both at New Hampton and in college. The academic program is geared toward helping students develop informed perspectives on today’s global world, along with the critical thinking, technological, communication, and social skills to solve problems and promote innovation wherever they go. This is exemplified through participation in the IB Diploma Programme, an integrated curriculum of six subject areas that incorporates critical thinking, research, and intercultural understanding. Equally prominent is the School’s commitment to the delivery of durable and transferrable skills using relevant content. Competency based grading and Habits of Mind allow for individualized growth, feedback, and assessment. It also ensures students develop the skills and self-knowledge to find success in all academic endeavors. The breadth of academic offerings at New Hampton ranges from university rigor to support—from the IB Diploma Programme, Advanced Placement, honors courses, and independent study to Academic Support classes in which students learn self-advocacy strategies to accommodate specific learning. A common thread uniting all aspects of the curriculum is an intentional emphasis on global perspectives. For example, the science curriculum emphasizes sustainable practices as part of global citizenship, English courses use a diverse selection of texts that represent a wide range of ethnicities and races, and students in history courses are exposed to histories and cultures of people world-wide, not just Euro-centric.
