Since 1821, New Hampton School has been a second home to passionate students and inspiring faculty. An independent, college preparatory boarding and day school, New Hampton is a dynamic, vibrant, global learning community of students in grades 9-12 and postgraduate who represent 27 states and 30 countries. New Hampton occupies 340 beautiful acres in the village of New Hampton, nestled in the foothills of the White Mountains, just west of Lake Winnipesauke.

New Hampton School cultivates lifelong learners who will serve as active global citizens. Courses within (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) curricula encourage hands-on experiences, analytical thinking, effective communication, and engagement with real-world issues. Built on its core values of respect and responsibility, New Hampton students work toward their potential and empathize with others, exercising kindness and compassion and celebrating differences as strengths. Robust arts and athletics offerings encourage students to grow every day and practice honesty and integrity in all matters.

The school seeks an Assistant Head of School, effective July 2020. In collaboration with the Head of School and the Administrative Team, the Assistant Head will serve as a role model for faculty and students and will share the responsibility for the integration of learning within the school. The Assistant Head will ensure excellence in academic and student programs including curriculum development and is charged with the successful day-to-day operation of the school through the effective delegation of responsibilities to the administrative team, faculty, and staff.

On June 27, 1821, William B. Kelley, Nathaniel Norris, and 17 associates received a charter for New Hampton Academy in order to provide a general secondary school for local boys and girls and for others who wished to board. Today, New Hampton School has it all: IB Diploma Programme, individualized academic coaching, Apple Distinguished School technology, engaged faculty who are good company, friendly students, and much more. Thirty countries and 27 states are represented in a student body where classmates genuinely care about one another. All talents, groups, and contributions are valued. New Hampton students reach for their dreams, taking full advantage of the school’s outstanding programs and opportunities. Their time is filled with great pride and purpose, balancing work and play in a welcoming global community that develops one’s voice, confidence, and vision.

A talented and well-educated faculty are by students’ sides to help them succeed and move forward in life. Ninety-five percent of faculty members live on campus and are expected to teach, coach, serve in a residential house, and lead co-curricular activities. Adult availability and a student-faculty ratio of 5:1 allow students time for spontaneous encounters and for the exchange of ideas or issues. There are 67 faculty and administrators; the faculty is gender-balanced; and 60% hold advanced degrees. The faculty is unpretentious and collegial, and they are intentional in their best service to students. Students experience 24-7 familiar relationships that make school like a second home. The advisor program enhances these relationships by creating a foundation for all manner of student support, counseling, and guidance.

New Hampton’s individualized curriculum allows students to find the perfect mix of challenging courses and project-based experiences to achieve their highest academic achievement. The academic program is geared toward helping students develop informed perspectives on today’s global world, along with the critical thinking, technological, communication, and social skills to solve problems and promote innovation wherever they go. This is exemplified through participation in the IB Diploma Programme, an integrated curriculum of six subject areas that incorporates critical thinking, research, and intercultural understanding. Equally prominent is the School’s commitment to the delivery of durable and transferrable skills using relevant content. Competency based grading and Habits of Mind allow for individualized growth, feedback, and assessment. It also ensures students develop the skills and self-knowledge to find success in all academic endeavors.

To prepare students for the next step of their academic journey, the College Counseling Office works to shepherd students and parents through the increasingly competitive and complex process of post-secondary admission. Arts and Athletics

Whether the fine and performing arts are a student’s driving force or a hobby, they find ideal opportunities and devoted arts teachers at New Hampton School. The Visual Arts Department offers studio art courses for all levels of interest and experience, as well as for those who know they will pursue art at the college level. Students have the opportunity to take introductory or intermediate courses in many different subjects including environmental art, digital media, photography, 2D design, 3D design, ceramics, and media productions. In the performing arts, a variety of theatre classes and self-designed courses of study to enrich the academic pursuit of all students, whether for wanting to pursue undergraduate programs in theater or those exploring a new field. are three mainstage productions each year, including a big musical in the Spring. In addition, New Hampton School offers a series of student-directed plays during the winter term. All courses deliver professional-level learning, including offerings such as Contemporary Voice Lab in the fully equipped recording studio and Animation with The Walt Disney Family Museum.

Today, student-athletes at New Hampton refine their athletic performance, advance their athletic goals, and successfully balance these challenges with academic growth and a fulfilling high school experience. Whether arriving at school to compete at the varsity level or hoping to make strides in a new sport and through team leadership, New Hampton students are filled with Husky Pride and support one another on and off the field, ice, or court. Student-athletes are supported by talented coaches, an experienced team of athletic trainers, and a full-time strength and conditioning coach. Teams include alpine skiing, baseball, basketball, cross country, equestrian, field hockey, football, golf, ice hockey, lacrosse, mountain biking, skiing, snowboarding, soccer, softball, and tennis.

Student Life

New Hampton School provides a full day of academic classes, co-curricular activities, and study time. In between, students are encouraged to enjoy each other’s company in the common spaces on campus. The weekends are spent engaging in athletic events, coordinated daytime activities, and evening entertainment. Day students are welcome to stay on campus until 7:30 p.m., which creates a truly inclusive and engaged community.

Committed to a mission of fostering, facilitating, and promoting positive behaviors and growth within its community of students, the Student Life Office presents a curriculum of topics centered on citizenship, education, and personal development. Ranging from time-management and goal- setting to bullying and inclusion, the Student Life curriculum is a key component of the New Hampton School experience, providing students with information and discussion time on numerous life-related educational issues.

They can be elected to Student Council, selected to be Proctors, serve on the Honor Board, become International Ambassadors, or contribute to the Student Activities Council. All student leaders serve as positive role models and exemplify the New Hampton School leadership qualities of respectfulness, approachability, and integrity.

The school supports a number of co-curricular and extra-curricular offerings for students to pursue their passions, discover new hobbies, or try something they are interested in pursuing. Some activities have formal time set aside during a co-curricular season, others meet during independently scheduled time throughout the year. Clubs and groups include Dance, Health and Wellness Council, Math Club, Model UN, Yearbook, and Yoga, among others.

The Service Learning curriculum, while offering both local and global service opportunities, connects each project to bigger questions about the world in which we live. New Hampton dedicates time for the entire school to complete a service project together throughout the school year. Additionally, each co-curricular group and athletic team initiates and completes service projects every season. Many academic classes also integrate service learning into their daily activities and curriculum.

New Hampton School is located in the center of the small village of New Hampton on a modern 340- acre campus nestled in the foothills of the White Mountains.

Students live in 12 residential houses varying in size with house parents and proctors who help provide a safe and welcoming living space. Meservey Hall, fully renovated in 2014, is home to the history department, Academic Support Program, and the Writing Center. The Pilalas Center for Math & Science opened in 2009 and is home to the math and science departments.

Main buildings include classrooms and science laboratories, three computer labs, a research center, and library. The arts and athletics facilities feature photography labs, a theater, studios for the arts (dance, music, and media production), a climbing wall, five athletic fields, nine tennis courts, a hockey rink, a ski and snowboard center, two ponds, and a 325-acre mountain area for outdoor recreation. Quality state-of-the-art facilities help all students, artists, and athletes perform at a high level.

New Hampton and the Lakes Region, New Hampshire

New Hampton is a quaint New England village 90 miles north of Boston. Set in central New Hampshire’s Lakes Region, New Hampton has easy access to many surrounding towns and cities, universities, and endless recreation opportunities in Maine, Vermont, and Massachusetts.

There are 273 lakes and ponds in the Lakes Region alone, ensuring plenty of fun throughout the seasons. The largest lakes in the region include Lake Winnipesaukee (72 square miles), with more

Surrounded by three mountain ranges, the wooded shoreline and crystal-clear water of this spring-fed lake make it a popular summer resort and a place to rest and relax in beautiful surroundings and enjoy water sports of all sorts. Access to countless ski resorts, snowmobile trails, and cross-country skiing make the area enjoyable for those who prefer snow sports as well.

Visitors may explore the numerous villages on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee by boat or by car. Each one offers something unique. Weirs Beach has arcades and boardwalks, waterslides, a public beach, and an activity center. Meredith is a restored mill village, where you can browse through antique, art, and craft galleries. Wolfeboro is a picture-perfect village, right down to its historic Main Street. Center Harbor, Moultonborough, Tuftonboro, Alton, Gilford, and Laconia all have their own special flavor. All communities have public parks and docks and feature varied activities such as fireworks displays and band concerts throughout the year.

Manchester, the most populous city in northern New England, is also less than an hour’s drive from New Hampton. Rich in history, this bustling urban center is the largest arts, cultural, and entertainment mecca in New Hampshire. The Currier Museum of Art features works by major American and European artists. It also operates the Frank Lloyd Wright–designed Zimmerman House. In an old fabric mill, the Millyard Museum traces how the nearby Amoskeag Falls shaped the city and its textile industry. Manchester is also home to unique boutiques and local cuisine with over 100 restaurants.

The new Assistant Head of New Hampton School will:

• Work collaboratively with the Director of Enrollment and Director of Marketing and Communication to promote matters of program and policy. • Work collaboratively with the Director of Athletics to ensure smooth execution of the co-curricular program. • Work collaboratively with the Director of Student Life to manage and execute matters related to residential life. • Support and lead faculty and staff toward professional growth within the time demands of a schedule. • Be instrumental in guiding the work of equity and inclusion at a school that is at the beginning stages of the work. • Ensure that the operations of the school run efficiently and effectively. • Run the day-to-day operations of the school when the Head of School is off campus. • Evaluate and govern current school programs and, as needed, implement programmatic changes. • Work closely with the Dean of Faculty to facilitate open communication between students (and parents) and the faculty and to design and execute faculty orientation and professional development, to coordinate weekly meetings, to manage faculty housing, and other various tasks. • Be a visible member of the school community.
