PRUNE YOUR ELMS

The annual restriction on pruning elm trees in Saskatchewan ended on August 31. Starting September 1, homeowners are encouraged to prune their elms to help keep them healthy.

Each year, pruning of elm trees is prohibited from April 1 to August 31 to reduce the risk of Dutch Elm Disease (DED). The elm bark beetles that spread the deadly disease are most active during this period, and fresh cuts tend to attract them.

Regular pruning, outside the ban period, help keep trees healthy and better able to resist all types of disease, including DED.

Removing dead wood also makes trees less attractive to elm bark beetles. Early fall can be a good time for tree maintenance, with generally more pleasant and predictable weather than early spring. Having leaves still on the trees makes it easier to spot and remove dead and unhealthy branches.

Improper pruning techniques can spread DED and other tree disease, so it’s important to prune correctly, whether you hire someone or choose to do it yourself. Under the provincial DED regulations, commercial pruners of elm trees must complete a recognized training program or be supervised by someone who has.

Due to the risk of spreading DED, transporting or storing elm firewood is ILLEGAL. Any elm wood should be disposed of promptly, by burning or burying it in a location approved by the local municipality. For more information on designated disposal areas and common practices in your area, check with your local municipal authority.

For more information about Dutch Elm disease, or to report a suspicious tree, contact the Ministry of Environment’s general inquiry line at 1-800-567-4224.

2018 R OCKGLEN MINOR BALL UPDATE

Ball is done for another year in Rockglen. What a fantastic year it was! We had 4 teams this year.  Tee Ball team coached by Megan Prefontaine. (10 kids on the team )  Rally cap team coached by Kyla Lamontagne (Played well in Baseball league)  Mites team coached by Carlyn Beliveau (Tied for fourth in Mite division Softball)  Pee Wee team coached by Arliss Loucks (Won third in Pee Wee Division Softball)

Minor ball was able to host (our first) South Country Softball year end tournament as our fundraiser for the year. This couldn’t have been done without all the time and effort volunteered by everyone involved. Organizing the ball schedules and draws, chalking lines on the field, bringing food to feed the tournament, cleaning up afterward, helping out on the field, umpiring games, or just coming out to watch these kids play, are just some of the things that happened with everyone’s help.

We would like to shout out a HUGE THANK YOU to:  Coaches and parents for spending time with all kids to make fun ball happen every year.  Minor Ball board that organized the tournament, and had many great ideas throughout the ball year.  Umpires for taking clinic, and umping for us at the tournament.  All other volunteers that helped out in any way throughout the season.  Rockglen Coop and Business Association for donating the BBQ used for cooking at the beach.  Rockglen Rec Board for their support year after year.  All other businesses that helped us out this year. The name needs to reflect our region (All Native Circle Presbytery and Saskatchewan Conference) – our environment, our culture, and our identity. Carla can get the forms for submissions if anyone has an idea that they might like to submit. Our very last Presbytery meeting for our present district (Chinook Presbytery - which runs from Coronach in the east to the Alberta border on the west and north to Leader and Riverhurst and Moose Jaw) will be held in Swift Current on November 16th and 17th. An inaugural meeting of Region 4 will take place in 2019, May 30th to June 2nd in Swift Current. Each congregation will be entitled to send representatives to this gathering.

People with similar interests will form clusters or networks within the region for example: Local/ Global Advocacy, Women of the United Church, All My Relations, Faith Formation, Intercultural Ministries, and Youth and Young Adult Community. If you have any interest in any of the above check out the Sask. Conference website ([email protected]) and be sure and let others know of your interest by contacting Linda Strumpf (306-629-3948).

October brings along the Thanksgiving holiday. The congregation of Wesley extends Happy Thanksgiving wishes to everyone in the community. Worship services will be held on Sunday morning (October 7th) at 11:00 am. (our usual time) should any locals or visitors like to join us. We all have a lot of blessings to be thankful for.

Drop-in-Centre News

It is now late September and hopefully we are all getting back into routine after a busy but enjoyable summer season. Crib Tournaments have resumed at the Centre. The next one will be on October 14th starting at 2 pm.

Potluck Supper/ Games Night will be held on the fourth Friday of the month again, therefore on September 28th starting at 6 pm. (and October 26th). Everyone is most welcome. If you are not a card player there is also shuffleboard, ping pong, or darts that could be played, or you could just come for the wonderful supper and then leave. Potlucks are always yummy. There is no charge; all that is required is a contribution towards the meal.

Pool Nights are held every Wednesday evening and the group would gladly welcome some additional players (for either an occasional basis or regular routine). If you are interested or would like more information contact Cecil at 306-476-2035 or Ron at 306-476 -7769.

League Bowling will soon be starting up at the Bowling Alley in early October. Watch for posters. Contact Doreen Oakes (306-476-2002) if you would like to be put on a team. Teams usually meet on Tuesday afternoons but if any person or any group would like a different day or time, arrangements can be easily made. Don’t hesitate to make a request. The Bowling Alley has been rented out a few times recently for some birthday parties and even for “an evening out” for some parents. We are very happy to see the alley being used more frequently and we would like to encourage more of this happening. Contact Doreen Oakes (306-476-2002) or Carla Yost (306-476-7208) for assistance.

Carla, Doreen, or Elaine Andreychuk (306-476-2035) are also the people to contact for Drop-in-Centre rentals.

At present the Centre is mainly used by the bridge players on Monday afternoons. If anyone would like to play another card game (eg. schmear, whist etc.) or shuffleboard, ping pong, or darts on another day or evening of the week, please let Carla know.

Rockglen Heritage Orchard

Fall is approaching and it’s time to think about putting the orchard to bed. This means mulching the trees, laying the grape vines down and covering them with leaves to protect them for the winter. If you have bags of leaves you’ve raked up from your yard and you don’t know what to do with them, please consider donating them to the orchard. They can be left by the main gate at any time. We incorporate any extra leaves into the flower gardens and allow them to become part of the soil over the winter.

Thanks to Dick Griffin for fencing in the new trees around the ball diamonds in hopes of preventing deer predation over the winter. We will need to look at doing the same thing to the trees around the playground downtown. I believe those have survived so far. We hope the fencing works so we won’t lose any more trees this winter. Our thanks also to Robert Prefontaine for digging out a lot of the quack grass around the established trees in the orchard. They appear to have escaped the attention of the deer, but the quack grass problem is an ongoing one. Feel free to help Robert out at any time! We’d also like to thank Harvey Kessler for timing the watering system and making sure it is turned on and off to avoid wasting water. Marilyn Remoue continues to do a wonderful job of mowing and trimming the area to keep it attractive and welcoming for visitors. Thank-you so much.

We have been pleased that townspeople have shared the few apples that were produced this summer and the reports are that they are, “Delicious!” With a little more rain and another year of growth, next summer could be spectacular. The rain of the recent weeks will hopefully provide a little reservoir for the trees for the winter. If you have a few minutes sometime, take a walk through the orchard or have a seat in the gazebo and just let the trees perform their magic on you. It’s a lovely, peaceful spot to sit and rejuvenate. Saskatchewan Fun and Interesting Facts

Here are some interesting tidbits about Saskatchewan:

Flag: Saskatchewan's official flag was adopted in 1969. It features the provincial shield of arms along with the floral emblem, the western red lily. The flag's upper half is green, representing Saskatchewan's northern forests; the lower half is gold, symbolizing the southern grain areas.

Flower: In 1941, the western red lily was chosen as the official flower of Saskatchewan. This lily grows in moist meadows and semi-wooded areas. With its flaming red blossoms, it stands out brilliantly against a natural green background. The western red lily is a protected species.

Bird: The sharp-tailed grouse is one of Saskatchewan's most popular game birds. It was selected as the provincial bird emblem in 1945.

Grass: In 2001, needle-and-thread grass was designated Saskatchewan's official grass. It's a native bunchgrass common to the dry, sandy soils of the Northern Plains. Seed stalks may reach 1.3 m (4 feet) in height and leaves are up to 30 cm (12 inches) long and very narrow. The name comes from the shape of the seeds, which are sharply pointed and have long, twisted, thread-like fibres.

Tree: In 1988, the white birch was adopted as the official tree of Saskatchewan. This hardwood tree is found across the northern three-quarters of the province. Typical uses for the wood include lumber, plywood, veneer and fuel.

Mineral: Sylvite, also known as potash, is Saskatchewan's official mineral. We are the world's largest producer and exporter of potash. Our vast reserves of potash are expected to last for hundreds of years at current rates of production. Over 95 percent of the potash produced in Saskatchewan is used for fertilizer purposes.

Animal: Saskatchewan designated the white-tailed deer our official animal in 2001. Here in our more northern latitudes, the white-tailed deer tends to be larger than its southern brethren, reaching heights of more than a metre (3.5 feet) at the shoulder and weighing as much as 180 kg (400 lbs). Adults have a reddish-brown summer coat and a greyish-brown winter coat, with white underparts. The name comes from the white underside of the tail, which is raised like a flag when the deer is running or frightened.

Sport: Curling was named Saskatchewan's official sport in 2001, although many have considered it so for years. Once called the "roaring game" because of the thunderous noise made by corn brooms used to sweep rocks down the ice, curling has a rich history in the province. The fabled Richardson brothers, curling out of Regina, won four Canadian and World men's championships between 1959-63. Another extraordinary rink from Regina, the Sandra Schmirler team, won three Canadian and World women's championships in the '90s, followed by the first ever women's Olympic gold medal in curling at 1998.

Emblem: Multis E Gentibus Vires, "From Many Peoples Strength" - The provincial Coat of Arms was granted through Royal Warrant from Queen Elizabeth II in 1986. It is an augmentation of the original shield of arms adopted by Royal Warrant of King Edward VII in 1906. A crest of a beaver and crown is placed above the shield. On either side of the shield are supporters: a lion and a deer. The shield itself displays the royal lion and three gold wheat sheaves, symbolizing Saskatchewan agriculture. The base

is formed of western red lilies, Saskatchewan's floral emblem.
