2013ANNUAL REPORT and successful completion of the Barre Social Enterprise Expansion Capital Campaign LETTER FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR TOM LONGSTRETH

In this fiftieth anniversary of President Lyndon Johnson’s War On Poverty, the nation has made important progress in creating a social safety net. Yet, parts of that safety net are quite weak, and overall rates of inequality BOARD OF DIRECTORS are the most extreme since the roaring twenties. Part of the role that Tom Connors, President ReSOURCE played in 2013, and will continue to play in the future, is to Ben Bosher, Vice President ensure a greater level of possibility to those with the fewest opportunities. Julie Atwood, Treasurer Janet Poeton, Secretary Thomas Melloni, Legal Counsel To combat poverty, ReSOURCE Joss Besse gave away $114,338 worth of “I’m particularly proud Stephen Conant Essential Goods to 1,084 low Chip Evans income individuals and families, of our impact in 2013, Charles Ginsburg Molly Gleason a record number of beneficiaries Ali Johnson distributed through thirty different as this was achieved Drew Waxler partner agencies. The demand for Registered Agent: vouchers is strong and our Board despite the loss of Tom Longstreth, Executive Director approved a 2014 budget of $150,000 ReSOURCE would like to thank Sheila for the Essential Goods Program to federal funding.” Hollender, Representative , better meet the need. The number of and the late Frank Petrosino for their partner agencies requesting vouchers has grown to 34 serving low income valuable service on the ReSOURCE Board of Directors clients in Chittenden, Grand Isle, Franklin, Addison, Washington, Lamoille, and surrounding counties. Part of this growth reflects our expansion in Morrisville, now our fifth service location.

ReSOURCE was highly productive in affordable housing construction in 2013. Burlington YouthBuild students weatherized 28 units and we neared completion of a gut rehab on Chase Street in Burlington under contract for Champlain Housing Trust (this will show as an outcome in 2014). Barre YouthBuild completed eleven solar thermal installations, nine public service projects, and a host of smaller construction and service projects for nonprofit and public agencies.

Despite a challenging funding year, ReSOURCE made important adjustments, maintained all programs, and further expanded our outcomes and mission impact. We completed our $1.7 million Barre Social Enterprise Expansion Capital Campaign and will finish construction this spring. We could not have accomplished so much nor sustained our programs in the face of such steep drops in government funding without the loyalty and support of so many individual, corporate, and foundation contributors.

Thank you for your belief in the mission of ReSOURCE.

SOCIAL IMPACT \\ ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP

All of our retail stores collect donated material for resale, saving more than 1,000 tons from the landfills every year. More and more people are recognizing the benefit to our communities and our environment highs in 2013 in highs new reached landfill the from diverted of material amount The of donating excess goods rather than discarding them.

Our Barre and Morrisville stores each combine household goods and building materials in one location, while in Burlington we divide the stores, both located on Pine Street. with 500,083 with Did you know that construction materials make up between 25% to 40% of our waste stream in the United States? Yet so much of that material can be reused. Imagine reducing our national contribution to landfills by one third! And any products which can be reused saves natural resources and energy in

items reused, weighing 1,080 weighing tons reused, items the production of their new replacements.

Salvaging may require a little more time and effort than demolition, but can save money and help keep our environment cleaner. For those who cannot do the work themselves, ReSOURCE offers a Deconstruction Service. Our DeCon crew can disassemble a house, shed, deck, or barn and haul the lumber, cabinets, and hardware back to our stores for resale.

Other environmental services provided by ReSOURCE include weatherization, 5-star energy rate home construction, and solar installations, each through YouthBuild.

All of the revenue earned from our sales and services goes to support ReSOURCE and our programs. As a result, earned income makes up the majority of our funding each year.

For a family recovering from disaster, loss of employment, , and other social disadvantages, imagine the cost and time savings if they had a washing machine in the home and did not have to go to the laundromat. And imagine trying to complete high school work or get a job these days without easy access to a computer.

ReSOURCE offers the means for disadvantaged families and individuals to acquire those necessities. Our Essential Goods program works with over thirty partner agencies in to identify those people in need, and to distribute vouchers to them for buying those goods in our stores. Last year, we donated more than $114,338 in goods and services through our Essential Goods program.

One concern we hear occasionally is, “Why are your prices not lower? How can the poor even afford a $200 washing machine?” Well, because we are open to the public, anyone can shop at ReSOURCE, no matter their financial standing. In fact, some people even search out valuable items to resell on their own. For this reason, we sell at market prices, then divert as much of that revenue as we can to fund all of our programs. So a family in need may be able to purchase that $200 washing machine with $100 cash and a $100 voucher from us. 2013 ANNUAL DONORS

ReSOURCE SOCIAL ENTERPRISE EXPANSION IN BARRE In 2009, ReSOURCE expanded into the city of Barre, with a goal of extending our mission further into Central Vermont. ReSOURCE purchased the historic Beck & Beck #1 Granite Shed; the students & instructors of YouthBuild spent four years renovating and weatherizing the building with help from regional contractors, completing work in the spring of 2014.

In addition to our social enterprise programs, we have endeavored to contribute more of the Arts to Central Vermont. The Barre ReSOURCE store includes a consignment space for upcycled art, and we have created the Re3 Flying Stage, which can be lowered from the original granite cranes to the retail floor, creating a performance space for music, theater, film screenings, and much more.

With the support of those generous donors to our capital campaign, the ReSOURCE Social Enterprise Expansion successfully raised $1,734,000! Nonprofit Org. US Postage PAID Burlington, VT Permit #158
