TGCA News Texas Girls Coaches Association Volume 54, No. 5 - January 2008 WHERE DOES ATHLETICS FIT INTO THE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM? We have all been there; sitting through another staff development day, wondering where does this wonderful information fit in with athletics and my team? Ironically, the question often asked by administrators is where does athletics fit into the educational system and does it need to be includ- ed during the school day? Every new school year we are greeted with fresh educational terms such as this year’s topic of High School Redesign often laced with acronyms and terms such as Small Learning Communities (SLC), PLC, IPG, IEP, PT, AIM, STAR, Benchmarks, Advisory, Teaming, Learning Walks, Prin- cipals of Learning, Best Practices, and Clear Expectations, just to list a few. A playbook is almost needed for teachers to decipher acronyms and their implications. High School Redesign came about because research conducted by experts concluded that high schools have become too large, and as a result they are impersonal, out of touch with the needs of students, and communication with parents and community is close to non-existent. The end re- sults are showing students graduate unprepared for college and/or the workforce. ... continued on page 6 2007-08 TGCA Officers President of TGCA 1st Vice President 2nd Vice President Past President Exective Director Debra Manley Lee Grisham Lynn Pool Alex Koulovatos Sam Tipton Pittsburg HS Wimberley HS Austin Bowie HS Burkburnett HS TGCA Office (903) 856-6461 (512) 847-5729 (512) 414-7347
