Abstract The Major Vegetation Types and plant communities of the Soutpansberg Centre of Endemism are described in detail with special reference to the Soutpansberg Conservancy and the Blouberg Nature Reserve. Phytosociological data from 466 sample plots were ordinated using a Detrended Correspondence Analysis (DECORANA) and classified using Two–way Indicator Species Analysis (TWINSPAN). The resulting classification was further refined with table–sorting procedures based on the Braun–Blanquet floristic–sociological approach of vegetation classification using MEGATAB. Eight Major Vegetation Types were identified and described as Eragrostis lehmanniana var. lehmanniana–Sclerocarya birrea subsp. caffra BNR Northern Plains Bushveld, Euclea divinorum–Acacia tortilis BNR Southern Plains Bushveld, Englerophytum magalismontanum–Combretum molle BNR Mountain Bushveld, Adansonia digitata–Acacia nigrescens Soutpansberg Arid Northern Bushveld, Catha edulis–Flueggia virosa Soutpansberg Moist Mountain Thickets, Diplorhynchus condylocarpon–Burkea africana Soutpansberg Leached Sandveld, Rhus rigida var. rigida–Rhus magalismontanum subsp. coddii Soutpansberg Mistbelt Vegetation and Xymalos monospora–Rhus chirendensis Soutpansberg Forest Vegetation. 26 Introduction The Soutpansberg Conservancy (SC) and the Blouberg Nature Reserve (BNR) reveal extremely rich diversities of plant communities relative to the sizes of these conservation areas (Van Wyk & Smith 2001). -

Box 524, Auckland Park 2006, South Africa Telephone: 27-11-489-2304 FAX: 27-11-489-2309 E-mail: [email protected] Introduction The Maremani Nature Reserve is presently being established and this document is intended as a summary of aspects of the geology within the boundaries of the Reserve. I have taken the liberty also to express my opinions with regard to possible roles that the Reserve might fulfill with regard to promoting geological awareness, education and research. The geology of the area covered by the Reserve was mapped in 1976 by Gunther Brandl and W. O. Willoughby of the Geological Survey of South Africa (presently the Council For Geo- science) at a scale of 1:50 000 for compilation at a scale of 1:250 000 (Brandl, 1981). The western portion to 30o 15’ east was previously mapped at a scale of 1:10 000 for compilation at scales of 1:50 000 and 1:125 000 by P. G. Söhnge (1946; Söhnge et al., 1948). Also locally within the western portion of the Reserve, maps at the scale of 1:5 000 were compiled by Messina Transvaal Development Corporation on farms and prospects investigated by the staff of the Messina Copper Mine. These maps are presently archived with me at RAU. Peter Horrocks wrote a PhD thesis on the geology of part of the western portion of what is now the Reserve (Horrocks, 1981). Charles Guerin in the late 1970’s worked on an unfin- ished MSc thesis on the calc-silicate rocks exposed in an area south of that studied by Peter Horrocks, some of which occur within the Reserve. -

Its eastern boundary is the watershed between the Sand River and its tributaries and the eastward draining Letaba and Pafuri Rivers. Its northern boundary is formed by Formations of the Soutpansberg Group that built the mountain range of that name. The western boundary consists from north to south firstly of Waterberg Group sedimentary rocks, followed by mafic Bushveld rocks and lastly by strata of the Wolkberg Group including the Black Reef Formation. These strata build the Highlands Mountains and the east- northeasterly trending Strydpoort Mountains that form the southern boundary. -

Pretoria. ISSN 0075-6458. By virtue of its geological history and geographical location the Soutpansberg consti- tutes a refuge for a high diversity of organisms. The Western Soutpansberg forms part of the Savanna Biome and is presently the area with the highest concentration of Nat- ural Heritage Sites in South Africa. A unique private initiative is under way to improve its national and international conservation status in a bid to conserve the mountain. A checklist of the spider species of the Western Soutpansberg collected over a five-year period is presented. Forty-six families, represented by 109 genera and 127 species have been collected. Of the species collected, 81 (64 %) were wandering spiders and 46 (36 %) web builders. The Thomisidae have the highest number of species (15) followed by the Araneidae and the Salticidae with 10 species each. Ninety-six genera are repre- sented by a single species. Ninety six percent of the species collected are new records for the area. This survey is the first for the area and forms part of the South African National Survey of Arachnida (SANSA). The temperature of the geothermal springs ranges from 41 ◦C to 49 ◦C (thermal/hot waters) and 53 ◦C to 69 ◦C (scalding/hyperthermal waters). The major water types are Na-Cl and Na-HCO3, which are typical of marine and deep groundwaters influenced by ion-exchange processes. The hydrochemical parameters suggest that thermal gradient, carbonate weathering, mineral dissolution, ion exchange, and evaporation are the main geochemical processes controlling the geothermal springs. The δ18O and δ2H values vary from 5.82% to 4.82% − − for δ18O and 33.5% to 24.6% for δ2H for all the geothermal spring water. The isotopic ranges of − − the groundwater are relatively smaller and more depleted than those of rainwater (δ2H = 9.8% − and δ18O = 2.7%). -
