Family and domestic violence is a disease of our society. I was in the legal profession for about 10 years, and my practice had a strong focus on family and criminal law. I witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of domestic and family violence on people’s lives and health and wellbeing. On numerous occasions I had to see clients who came in with injuries and bruises—others came in with photographic evidence of their injuries—inflicted by their partners. On a number of occasions I went with my clients to apply for violence restraining orders, to seek legal protection from their violent partners. Family and domestic violence has many forms, including physical, emotional, mental and psychological abuse. Whichever form it takes, violence in our society is never acceptable, even more so when the violence is perpetrated against women and children. It is a sign of the progression of our society that we talk more and more about family and domestic violence, and that there is more and more reporting of it. Family and domestic violence can happen to anyone—any family— irrespective of their background.

PARLIAMENT OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA INAUGURAL SPEECH Hon Samantha Rowe, MLC (Member for East Metropolitan Region) Legislative Council Address-in-Reply Wednesday, 22 May 2013 Reprinted from Hansard Legislative Council Wednesday, 22 May 2013 ____________ ADDRESS-IN-REPLY Motion HON SAMANTHA ROWE (East Metropolitan) [5.36 pm]: Mr President, I stand before you humbled to be part of this great institution, the Parliament of Western Australia, and to be delivering my maiden speech tonight to the Legislative Council. It is both an honour and a privilege to be elected to the thirty-ninth Parliament as a Labor member for the East Metropolitan Region. The East Metropolitan Region is an exciting area to represent. It is a diverse region that covers electorates from Mount Lawley to Armadale and the hills of Kalamunda to Midland. It takes in Perth Airport, Ascot Racecourse and the tourist attraction of the Swan Valley. I would like to acknowledge and congratulate my Labor colleagues in the East Metropolitan Region, Hon Alanna Clohesy and Hon Amber-Jade Sanderson, whom I look forward to working closely with over the next four years. And may I congratulate all new members in this place tonight. The process and procedures of Parliament can seem daunting at first, but I would like to take this opportunity to thank you, Mr President, the Clerks, the staff at Parliament and the government Whip for making the new members feel welcome and ensuring our transition is as smooth as possible. I appreciate the professionalism that has been extended to me, and as the Whip for the opposition, I look forward to having a strong working relationship with all of you in the chamber.

  • Political Chronicles Commonwealth of Australia
Australian Journal of Politics and History: Volume 53, Number 4, 2007, pp. 614-667. Political Chronicles Commonwealth of Australia January to June 2007 JOHN WANNA The Australian National University and Griffith University Shadow Dancing Towards the 2007 Election The election year began with Prime Minister John Howard facing the new Opposition leader, Kevin Rudd. Two developments were immediately apparent: as a younger fresher face Rudd played up his novelty value and quickly won public support; whereas Howard did not know how to handle his new “conservative” adversary. Rudd adopted the tactic of constantly calling himself the “alternative prime minister” while making national announcements and issuing invitations for summits as if he were running the government. He promised to reform federal-state relations, to work collaboratively with the states on matters such as health care, to invest in an “education revolution”, provide universal access to early childhood education, and to fast-track high-speed broadbanding at a cost of $4.7 billion. Rudd also began to stalk and shadow the prime minister around the country — a PM “Doppelgänger” — appearing in the same cities or at the same venues often on the same day (even going to the Sydney cricket test match together). Should his office receive word of the prime minister’s intended movements or scheduled policy announcements, Rudd would often appear at the location first or make upstaging announcements to take the wind from the PM’s sails. Politics was a tactical game like chess and Rudd wanted to be seen taking the initiative. He claimed he thought “it will be fun to play with his [John Howard’s] mind for a while” (Weekend Australian Magazine, 10-11 February 2007).

Extract from Hansard [COUNCIL — Thursday, 14 February 2019] p363a-364a Hon Dr Steve Thomas STATE PARLIAMENTARY LIBERAL PARTY — ALBANY CONFERENCE Statement HON DR STEVE THOMAS (South West) [5.31 pm]: I would like to take this opportunity to pass on my thanks to the community of Albany for its hospitality last week. The state Parliamentary Liberal Party took itself down to Albany for its annual summer conference, where some of that time was spend on internal discussion. The community of Albany was incredibly welcoming of all members of Parliament from the state opposition. The state opposition took great advantage of that and spread about throughout the community to learn more about the great southern and the town of Albany. There were some great examples of this. There was a focus on learning more about that lovely part of the world that I am privileged to represent. We sent Hon Jim Chown, for example, to the Shire of Plantagenet to the talk about tourism and regional infrastructure. Hon Tjorn Sibma went to look at the Great Southern Highway and the issues that relate to that. I know that Hon Simon O’Brien is a passionate advocate of motorsports and he looked at that. Hon Donna Faragher visited the local TAFE. Hon Nick Goiran spoke to a number of community groups. Hon Michael Mischin and I spoke to groups about Albany’s main street industry and development, particularly on the foreshore. Although he has been called away on urgent parliamentary business, Hon Ken Baston visited the major agricultural industries in the great southern.
