It’ll not be the soul of me when I was a lad for I hadn’t a soul as would make me an angel then”, voicing an important Lawrentian truth. For Lawrence, “the great relationship” is the relationship between man and woman and the ultimate aspiration of life is to perfect one’s essential being which can only be achieved when an individual is able to polarize his or her primal consciousness with that of another. This paper traces the trajectory of Lawrence’s concept of love and selfhood through his novels. In his early novels such as The White Peacock (1911), Sons and Lovers (1913) and The Rainbow (1915), Lawrence displays a lot of faith in individual relationships which, in fact, become the medium for the self to realize itself. -

H. Lawrence as expressed in his novels. X had originally intended to present a general, critical analysis of the political philosophy^ but as research progressed, it seemed necessary for me to discover exactly what political views Lawrence really held. Therefore, the thesis has become, to a very large extent, a presentation and an organization of the strictly factual material that I have found in Lawrence's novels. In order to be absolutely fair to Lawrence, I have presented this material, as often as possible, in Lawrence's words rather than my own* My concern has been with the facts, rather than with a criticism or an evaluation of the facts* The chief contribution that I have made is in extracting the facts, and organizing them. I have taken the liberty, however, of selecting novels which I consider characteristic of the man. They are: Sons and Lovers. The Rainbow* Women in Love. Aaron's Rod. Kangaroo. The Plumed Serpent. and Lady Chatterley's Lover. Apocalypse and"Reflections on the Death of a Porcupine" are also discussed. The facts have been organized into the following categories: The Genesis of Lawrence's Ideas, Lawrence's Anti-Capitalistic and Anti-Mechanization Views, Lawrence’s Anti-Democratic Leanings and his Attitude Toward War, The Communist and Fascist Questions, and Individual Liberty, Leadership and Power. -

2 FRIEDA VON RICHTHOFEN LAWRENCE: FRIEDA DELIVERED? - 625 - Chapter 7 Historical Note: Frieda and the Matriots In turning from Catherine Hogarth Dickens to Frieda von Richthofen Lawrence we have to change our historical perspective. Catherine's life we could consider under the perspective of magnanimous individualism, for Frieda's life this is not enough. Catherine can be called, without detracting from her stature, an ordinary woman. Her sincerity, her willingness to fill her place in the system and her inability to cope with its double think are part of the ordinary woman's life experience. Frieda was an extraordinary woman who belongs to the history of women's rebellion against the system. This does not mean that her life does not also belong to the history of magnanimous individualism. It does, though on the face of it Frieda rejected magnanimous assumptions She rejected them, however only in the form of what I have called the division-of-labour society. She saw, rightly, that this was an ethos that traps women in situations where their magnanimity is turned against them, and she decided from an early age that she would be undomesticated. She flaunted idleness, and though in fact she learnt a lot about housework from Lawrence and had to do more than her share because of his illness, she was always careful to be unobtrusive about it. This was not how she wanted to make her mark. Her idea of life well spent was a creative co-operation with Lawrence resulting in work that would change society. In this - 626 - she belongs without doubt to the history of magnanimous individualism. -

Such issues include: the means of social change; alternative idealisms; what social role, if any, the concerned individual should have; the practice of “star-polarity” (WL 201); and the ultimate nature of Lawrence’s individual quest. To regard this as a playful novel of reprise, whether of Lawrence’s break with Bertrand Russell,2 or Italian idealist politics,3 or Women in Love’s tensions of individuation (man-woman, man-man, -

H. (David Herbert), 1885-1930 Biographical Sketch David Herbert Richards Lawrence was born September 11, 1885, in Eastwood, near Nottingham, to Arthur Lawrence, a coal miner, and Lydia Beardsall. He attended Nottingham University College, and in 1908 he took a teaching position at Davidson Road School in Croydon. Lawrence wrote in his spare time, and in 1911, with the help of Ford Maddox Hueffer, he published his first novel, The White Peacock. Poor health forced him to resign his teaching job this same year, at which time he became a full-time writer. He soon published The Trespasser (1912) and Sons and Lovers (1913). -

KANGAROO RESEARCH NOTES INTRODUCTION (written 2002) IT HAS, for many years now, been a criticism, even a complaint, about Rananim (and perhaps about the D.H.Lawrence Society of Australia itself) that it has been much too involved with what is known in some circles as "The Darroch Thesis". Yet, to the extent that Rananim (and Australian interest in Lawrence generally) is concerned about what happened when Lawrence came to Australia in 1922, and indeed what his Australian novel Kangaroo is about, is the extent to which such a focus and emphasis are both inevitable and proper. That is not to say that rival or counter-interpretations and criticism of the "Thesis" should be ignored. Far from it. It is a major disappointment that such criticism and counter-interpretations have not come forward, at least until the recent CUP editions, and not for inclusion and balance in Rananim. In particular, no one, not even the CUP editors, have advanced any credible or substantive alternative argument about how else a real secret army found its way into Kangaroo. Yet the full case for the "Darroch Thesis" has also not been put forward, until now (though "the best argument" was advanced in Rananim 7-8/1, "Nothing to Sniff At"- see elsewhere in this site). So there are omissions on both sides. It is an aim of this new section that it will start, if not a debate, then at least establish a forum for possible discussion on this important - indeed, vital - aspect of Lawrence scholarship, both here and overseas. Comments therefore are welcome, and a facility (click [email protected]) will be provided in the hope that some discussion will indeed be generated.
