2 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

This has been a year that will stick in my memory forever, as never in my wildest dreams did I think that one day I would become the President of Northern Athletics.

It has been a great honour for me and my club Sunderland Harriers as it was way back in 1907 that the honour of Northern President was last bestowed on a Sunderland Harrier.

Shortly after my appointment, I was off on my first assignment to the Border Harriers Brampton to Carlisle 10 mile Road Race. This is the oldest 10 mile road race in the UK and played host once again to the Northern Championship. I competed in this event myself some years ago and I know how fast this course can be especially if the wind is blowing in the right direction. This was the case on the day with the winner just missing out on dipping below the 50 minute barrier.

New Year’s Eve took me to Clitheroe and a warm welcome from our chairman Tony Wood for the Ribble Valley 10k, which had a class field to give the Northern title race the prominence the championship event deserves. Being a road and cross country man these were events that got my presidency off to a splendid start.

The third Northern Championship race was at Silksworth in Sunderland – the 5k - organised by myself and just a mile from my front door! I’m pleased to say the times recorded lived up to the standard of a Northern Championship event which thankfully impressed Northern Athletics Championship Road Running Secretary Ken Smith.

The Cross Country Championships were held at a new venue at Harewood, near Leeds, and was also used as a trial for the 2019 National Cross Country Championships. I’m pleased to say it came through the test with flying colours.

I also visited Sheffield for the indoor championships and was very impressed with the facilities provided and their smooth running through the dedicated professionalism of the Northern technical officials.

The Senior Track and Field Championship at Sports City and the Young Athletes Championship at Wavertree Stadium were other highlights for me over the summer.

The Senior and Young Athletes Road Relays are a favourite of mine as we have hosted this event at Sunderland many times. It has certainly grown over the years at the Sport City venue and the facilities available here are superb.

As well as attending the Northern Championship events I have also had the pleasure of attending the Executive Board committee meetings. The work done by a very small number of elected officials and the office staff is remarkable. They deserve our thanks for the commitment they give to Northern Athletics.

Finally, I rounded off my year of office at the Northern Cross Country Relay Championships at Graves Park in Sheffield. The sun eventually shone to signal my year of duties as Northern Athletics President had come to an end. Thanks again for the support offered to me during my year of office.

Kevin Carr 2017/18 President

3 CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

You will recall that our annual meeting last year we asked you to vote in principle in favour of our proposed affiliation scheme which the clubs present did. We then moved into a period of consultation with all the clubs in the North and after listening to your input we asked clubs to express an intention to join the scheme in the period up to April 1 st this year. By that date we had over 100 clubs giving us the green light to adopt the scheme and on that basis we agreed it was viable both in principle and financially.

We asked the clubs to commit to a club affiliation scheme whereby each club would pay a sum to Northern Athletics representing £2 per EA registered athlete within that club as at the 1 st October 2018. By the time that date had been reached we had over 170 clubs committed. Following letters from our office requesting payment we can now announce that we have received income of approximately £57,000.00 with some clubs still to pay.

On behalf of the Board of Northern Athletics I want to pass on my heartfelt gratitude to all of you who are now part of this new era. It has not been an easy ride and much work has been put into this by people who believed in our aims. It also on occasions resulted in a number of you within your clubs standing up and fighting our corner. If it wasn’t a fight then it was at least a reasoned argument in favour of supporting Northern Athletics and all we stood for. If you had not been prepared to stand up and be counted we certainly could not have relied on anybody else nor any other organisation within our sport to ensure our survival.

There are currently arguments and disputes between Athletics and UK Athletics, there has been the resignation of UKA’s chief executive and the request for UKA’s chairman to stand down by the UK Member’s Council. There have been warnings to the national governing bodies to mediate a settlement from Sport England to avoid further loss of funding for athletics and of course there is always the potential reduction in government funding generally. It does not take much imagination to realise life is not peaceful for those that are using or applying for government money and of course using our money, in terms of registration fees. Whether some of that discord is of their own making only time will tell.

Meanwhile the clubs, the counties and the areas need to look after themselves. By virtue of our scheme we have gone some way towards achieving that and the 174 clubs who are now part of us have played a huge part in making that happen.

As Churchill said of a very significant turning point in history ‘This is not the end, it is not even the beginning of the end but it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning’. So in that vein for the next year we shall consult the clubs on the way forward from here. This we believe would be best done by a survey and the clubs themselves can input into the questions to be part of that survey. We hope this is a democratic and useful way to proceed. We acted on the results of the last survey and we will use the results of this one to develop our plans. We shall keep everybody informed throughout.

Meanwhile and thankfully we have been able to carry on doing what we are best at by holding great Northern Championships and this can now continue without the threat of closure hanging over us. We are grateful to all those who help us put on those events in particular the clubs who support us every time we ask and of course the officials who, rain or shine, make it work on the day.

Today is a day to say to all of you ‘Thank You’ for saving a wonderful competition provider by recognising the issues we had and then committing to us. It will send out a message to the rest of the country that this can be done and clubs can determine their future regardless of the doubts others want to place on their ambitions.

You and Northern Athletics have made this happen and in the future 2018 will be looked upon with pride as the year we managed to preserve an absolutely essential cog within the . Long may we continue.

Tony Wood Chairman 4 HONORARY TREASURER’S REPORT

For the financial year 2017-18, the income and expenditure account shows a net surplus for the year of £14,907, (2016-17 = £24,391) and the balance sheet shows that at 31 st March 2018 the net assets of Northern Athletics were £262,593.

The surplus includes an annual competition grant of £41,000 from England Athletics and the overall financial position has been helped by a combination of organising increasingly popular and successful events and an ongoing review of the running costs of the organisation. The success of the events is primarily down to the hard work of the many volunteers and staff that promote, organise and facilitate the events.

The income and expenditure account provides details of the long-standing support and sponsorship income from Start Fitness, an internet and retail-based sportswear supplier and manufacturer, who provide support of £12,000 for the track and field and cross-country championships, which remains a valuable and much appreciated source of funding.

A concerted effort has been made over a number of years to review and reduce running costs of the organisation where appropriate. As a result, over the last three years there have been annual savings in running costs of £11,145 (12%); £7,401 (9%) and £1,333 (2%). These savings have been made during a time when the number and scale of competitions provided have increased significantly.

A full range of championship events were promoted successfully during the year. Notably, in 2017-18 there was a small surplus of £1,224 from Track & Field Championships; a surplus of £5,997 from Cross Country (compared to 2016-17 there were increased costs of hosting the event at Harewood House) and £14,699 from Road Relays and the Junior 5k (there were 3 relay championships in the 2016-17 financial year). The significant financial returns from these Championship events has been achieved through the great efforts by teams of organisers who monitor and control costs of running the events and also promote them to generate increasing levels of entries.

A surplus of £6,274 was generated from organising a number of Open Indoor events during the winter, and is shown in Track & Field Teams & Matches, alongside the costs of supporting athletes from the North to compete in a number of high quality cross country and road team events.

Overall, the last two years have generated the first two financial surpluses in eleven years of providing competition. However, without the £41,000 competition grant from England Athletics, we would have reported a deficit of £27,164 in 2017-18. The need for an independent and sustainable source of income for Northern Athletics has been well documented elsewhere and heralded the introduction of the affiliation scheme in October 2018. The support from Clubs and athletes has been tremendous and up to 20 th October 2018 affiliation fees of £54,369 have been received from 132 clubs. This provides a significant and sound basis for planning future competition provision and support to clubs, athletes and officials throughout the North.

Once again, my personal thanks and appreciation go to Judith and Pat and a team of volunteers throughout the North who contribute hugely to the smooth running of the financial activities of Northern Athletics.

CROSS COUNTRY REPORT

Northern Athletics Cross Country Championships Harewood House 27th Jan

The Northern Championships were held here for the first time. The venue was chosen as one that potentially could host the National event (The North are hosts in 2019) and one big advantage of the venue is the fact that it can offer a challenging and varied 6K lap eg 2 laps for the senior men’s 12K race. On the debit side access is somewhat limited and there is little hard standing for car parking. The venue is significantly more expensive than we are used to and the event did make a loss. However the ECCA did donate £2000 to Northern Athletics to reduce the magnitude of the loss. It is an excellent setting for a cross country event with course laps that are varied and interesting.

The weather in the months leading up to the event proved to be one of the wettest winters we have ever seen, and this meant that parking areas had to be redefined only days before the event. However despite the parking issues and wet conditions the venue and courses proved extremely popular with athletes and spectators

Thanks to the efforts of the Northern Officials and the club course set up teams we had another very successful event - despite the amount of water we were working with.

The event continues to be popular with athletes; This year we attracted 3256 entries & 2389 finishers (the highest ever for Northern Athletics) with 229 complete teams. One other factor is that clubs are controlling entries rather better; 73% of entered runners finished (This figure has increased every year since 2007 when it was 49%)

The Senior men (761) and senior women (435) numbers are also the highest number of finishers recorded in the last 11 years. The Young Athlete numbers were also at a 10 year high with 1060 athletes competing

The weather on the day was good. All the races were of the usual high standard, and the event programme ran perfectly to time, a testament to the goodwill of, and teamwork between all those involved in the event.

Cross Country Relays 2018

The 9th running of the event took place at Graves Park Sheffield on the 20th October, and again proved popular with both athletes and spectators. A total of 422 teams had entered, down from 462 in 2017.

Complete team and athlete numbers were also down, but by a lower percentage reduction than last year, with 337 (358 in 2017) complete teams across the age group races.

It is unclear why the entry numbers have dropped. The clubs who entered in 2017 are all on the list of affiliated clubs for the 2018 event and a number of athletes who have represented England and GB in international Cross Country events were competing.

The event again presented medals to the first B teams to finish, and this does seem very popular with clubs and their athletes who are not selected for their clubs “A” team

This year’s weather was much improved over 2017, the winds and rain of Storm Brian being replaced by calm and in the afternoon sunny weather Course conditions were very good.

Parking at Meadowhead School, was again used. This is an academy school and the charge of £3 per car, had been increased by the school to £4 this year. All aspects of the event worked well and the event proved popular and successful

Thanks are again due to the host club – Sheffield Running Club, led by Clerk of Course Mike Levery, for their help with course design & operation; and to all the Northern Officials who attended on the day.

Congratulations to Preston Harriers (Men) and Rotherham Harriers (Women) for their Senior wins. 9 Results

Liverpool XC Challenge Sefton Park 27 th Nov 2017 Northern Athletics Teams: Sefton Park 25th November. Thanks to the athletes for again supporting the North. Sefton Park was the wettest I had ever seen it, and the course was water logged and very muddy. The standard of the junior/senior races was again very high, but Northern athletes performed well on the day, and we finally managed to get a senior inter area team competition against the Midlands off the ground. (Midlands had only one junior man and no junior women selected)

Cross Country Invitation - Venta De Banos Spain Dec 16 th 2017

Vento de Baños International Cross, Following a mammoth, but on time journey to the sleepy mid country Spanish town that is Vento de Baños the NA party arrived very late and therefore bedded down for the night on arrival.. The following morning after breakfast we went to view the course which for those like me that have never experienced European cross country it can only be described as enlightening. 11 A world away from the likes of Sefton Park and Knowsley Safari Park, the course was a mixture of cinder track, matting and a ploughed field and for good measure a hastily built wooden ramp to exit the track.

Race day brought a sunny but cold start, which saw our 4 ladies Alex Bell, Lydia Turner, Georgia Malir and last but not least Amelia Petit on the start line with non-other than Kenyan superstar Ruth Jebet.

Jebet was outstanding, winning the race by a huge distance outlining her class and drawing huge applause from the large crowd. Lydia led the North team home ahead of 2 England representatives. Our athlete Alex Bell was next home, closely followed by Georgia Malir and Amelia Petit. Lydia took the win of the U/23 race with Georgia taking second. At the time of writing I’m not in possession of the official results.

Next up was our injury depleted men’s team of Josh Schofield and Liam Burthem. Unfortunately Joe Wilkinson and Carl Avery were late withdrawals. Again a star studded field had been assembled for the 10k race, led by the Kenyan duo of Kiplemo and Barega. These two did not disappoint pulling away from the field with ease and again an excited crowd cheered the two in a sprint finish of pulsating speed with Barega taking the win.

Liam led the North home in 22nd position with Josh directly behind him in 23rd having earlier led the race. All 6 athletes performed at a very high level and did themselves and the team managers proud . I’m sure being on the start line with World and Olympic medallists will be in their memories for quite some time.

Many thanks to Ben at Jamin Sports for the tremendous organisation, Steve Gaines and Rob Cameron for the selection and Judith as ever for the faultless coordination.

10K Championship at Ribble Valley 10k on 31 st December 2017. With it’s closed roads and wealth of experienced officials, this race has grown in stature and now attracts both the numbers and quality that the organisers deserve.

Jonny Brownlee again tested himself against some of the best road runners in the country, and Laura Weightman selected it for her inaugural 10k road race and set the fastest time in the UK for 2017.

This year the weather was ideal for the race, mild and cloudy with little wind, all of which helped the 1267 th , and final finisher to complete the course in 87.22 minutes, giving ample time to head home, and prepare for the New Year Celebrations. Results

5K Championship in Sunderland 5K at Silksworth Sports Centre Sunderland on Thursday July 12 th2018

The warm summer evening was ideal for a 7.15 race start and with the knowledge and experience of Kevin Carr and Bill McGuirk organising, you know the race will go well. In fact hosts Sunderland Harriers were amongst the medals in both the Men’s and Women’s team events, whilst the winning streak of Morpeth Harriers in the individual men’s race was broken, although they still managed to retain the team gold medal. 15 Northern Road Relays - 12 & 6 stage and Y.A 5k individual race at Birkenhead Park Wirral Sunday 25 th March 2018 This is a new venue with a flat traffic free course, which, coupled with a warm sunny day, brought the best out of the event, and attracted a lot of positive comments

Besides the traditional men’s 12 stage and women’s 6 stage races we again held the individual 5k race for Young Athletes, first introduced last year at Blackpool.

5k Numbers were encouraging, only the under 17 women did not have any complete teams, and this event will remain on the 2019 fixture list.

Combined Autumn Relay Championships at Sport City, Manchester on Sunday 23 rd September 2018 Held again at Sportcity for the 3 rd year running. This venue continues to be popular with both athletes, and spectators, with those inside the stadium having a grandstand view of the first and the last 300M of each leg. Inside the Stadium, the East stand was busy, but not as packed as last year, as the sunny North stand was a much warmer option. Feather flags in both the North and West stand were a good method of displaying club locations, as “Do you know where my club is“ was the most asked question at registration.

16 On line entry and team declaration / changes has now become established, and the E.A. checking procedure for both club and athlete is working well.

There were a couple of falls at the start of both of the Under 13 races, but for the remainder of the races all athletes managed to stay on their feet!

Road Fixtures 2017-18 Age UK Leeds Abbey Dash 5th Nov 2017 (Armed Forces UK fixture)

On a chilly autumnal Sunday morning in perfect racing conditions we saw an amazing performance from Eilish McColgan who kick started her season by defending her Age UK Leeds Abbey Dash title with a new course of 32.05, eclipsing Jill Boltz’s (nee Hunter) 1990 record of 32,15. Eilish was followed home by N Ireland's Emma Mitchell in 32.51 and Ashley Gibson in 3rd in 33.32. The Women’s race saw 20 athletes run sub 35 with 15 men running sub 30, in what were perfect racing conditions

In the men's race Sam Stabler continued his great form to power away from Ireland's Paul Pollock. Sam recording 29.13, with Paul second in 29.20 and Ben Connor 3rd in the same time.

In the Junior Dash Ethan Hussey proved yet again that we have an amazing prospect for the future winning the 2k in 5.05. Watch and remember this name people.

In the elite team race the North of England took first place in the inaugural Tudor Shield event. A big thank you to Rob Tudor, elite race sponsor, who made today's great elite race possible (and Ikem Billy for allowing the opportunity to happen!)

Trafford 10k (incorporating England 10k champs) September 2nd 2018. The North of England dominated a class field in both the men's and women's races. The scarcity of inter area teams barring ourselves and the Midlands women did not detract from a well organised and competitive race, thankyou Altrincham & DAC and Dave Norman.

The men's race had a winner in Marc Scott of Richmond and Zetland AC breaking 29min in a time of 28.57, followed by Scotland's Andrew Butchart on the comeback trail with an impressive 29.28, with Dejene Gezimu of the North in 3rd in 29.35. An impressive run from Joe Wilkinson in 6th in 30.22 returning from an injury ridden winter. David Devine fresh from his gold and silver in the Euro Para Championships was 15th in 31.01 in his first outing for the North, with a tired (through marathon prep) Steven Bayton 25th in 31.46

In the ladies race the North again dominated in a class field with Danielle Hodgkinson running a 14 sec PB to finish 4th in 34.24, behind Jessica Piaescki of Stockport winning in an impressive 32.52.

Danielle finishing just in front of Charlene Thomas in 5th place in 34.54, just holding off our wonder vet Kirsty Longley for the North in 6th place in a PB time of 35.11 and Georgia Malir North in 7th in 35.23.

North of England women's team manager Sally Malir took an admirable 1st place in the Vet 50 category

22 TRACK AND FIELD REPORT

The 2017/18 Northern Athletics Track and Field season has continued to deliver the usual high quality competitions both indoors and outdoors. There have been many developments away from the competition areas but events have gone ahead with varying success without being unduly affected. The Indoor Open meetings have gone from being popular to a level that has had us asking whether we should have a third meeting at the end of the indoor season. The format has proved extremely popular, not to mention unusual, with all track events being seeded simply on time not on gender or age group. Entries in field events are almost at an unmanageable level, but we pride ourselves on being able to accommodate the huge numbers who have entered thanks to the skill and dedication of our officials who are happy to work a 10-12 hour day with few breaks and little reward other than our gratitude. The Indoor Combined Events continue to be held within the England Athletics event and a great number of Juniors take part with entries increasing every year. The senior numbers do not justify NA hosting a stand alone event and the athletes benefit from taking part in a nationwide competition. The Senior/U20 outdoor Championships were back at their now regular venue at Sport City Manchester which also includes some Para events and can seem like a drawn out meeting but if all who entered turned up and competed then it would flow better. We are often short of officials for this meeting because of the clash with County Schools. In 2019 this clash will not be happening as the Area Championships will be a week earlier than in recent year and will therefore benefit from avoiding County Schools dates – good news for event organisers but more importantly for the U20 athletes. From this meeting the Under 20 winners were invited to represent Northern Athletics at the Welsh International meeting at Swansea in July which gives a taste of the next level of competition. Outdoor Combined Events Under 20 and Senior were again in with England at Bedford but the U/15, U/17 were back at Manchester with a great turn out of Northern athletes who were also able to witness some great senior performances from a home international under 20/23 Combined Event match held on the same day. Inter counties for the under 15/17 took place at Leigh. This match is the highlight for many young athletes as it enables them to win a county vest and the enthusiasm they have for track and field shows with many a personal best, all recorded on the Power of 10 listing. Liverpool was the venue for our Junior Age Group Championships, it has been a good number of years since we were last there and, following a wide ranging refurbishment proved to be an excellent venue with plenty of free parking, an indoor warm up area, excellent organisational support from Liverpool Harriers and plenty of entries who turned up and competed. A wonderful summer of track and field athletics enhanced by marvellous weather and some excellent performances. I have only one question - where do we go from here? Is this enough or could we do more whilst not forgetting we are first and foremost a competition provider and our only aim is to provide the best possible competition for our athletes.

23 Welsh Under 20 International Match Report Wednesday 25 th July 2018 - Swansea

A Northern team was once again invited to compete in the Welsh U20 International meeting in July with the event being held for the first time at Swansea University following several years of the competition being held in Cardiff. England Athletics underwrite the costs for the area teams to travel to this meeting and therefore the teams are entered as England North, England South etc. and we are grateful for EA support which enables our athletes to travel to this event.

The England North team was selected from the winners (or 2 nd placed) athletes at the Northern Championship. Unfortunately this year the team was slightly depleted due to various reasons such as injury, planned holidays and work schedules. Nonetheless, a team of 23 undertook the long journey to South Wales and performed admirably against a very strong England South team, England Midlands, Scotland, Wales, Welsh Schools U20 and Northern Ireland.

The stand out performance of the evening for the North came from Sale Harrier Emmanuel Odubanjo in the Triple Jump with a leap of 14.68, 49cms ahead of the second placed athlete.

In the Women’s Triple Jump, Holly Smith recorded a new PB as she took second place. Alice Barnsdale (Hammer), Leah Hillman (Javelin), Bronte Jones (Shot) and Tamsin McGraw in the 800m also achieved excellent second places in their events. Joe Martin threw a Discus PB for his third place.

Team finishing positions were: Men Women Joe Ferguson (4) 100m Rachel Bennett (7) William Hughes (4) 200m Layla Bell (6) Rory Keen (4) 400m no representative Tiarnan Crorken (3) 800m Tamsin McGraw (2) Cameron Bell (4) 1500m Emily Lowery (4) no representative 3000m no representative Adam Coles (5) 110/100mHu Amy Carter (3) Benjamin Schofield (3) 400mHu Steph Driscoll (4) Adam Berwick (5) High Jump no representative Luke Southerton (8) no representative Emmanuel Odubanjo (1) Triple Jump Holly Smith (2) no representative no representative David Todd (3) Shot Bronte Jones (2) Thomas Padley (6) Javelin Leah Hillman (2) Joe Martin (3) Discus no event no event Hammer Alice Barnsdale (2) Men’s team (5) 100m Relay Women’s team (4)

Huge thanks to all the team, their parents and coaches and especially the Team Managers - Malcolm Fletcher and Janet Ferguson (on her birthday!), who stepped in at the last minute due to the unavoidable withdrawal of our usual TM’s. Well done to all the team - your tenacity, determination, attitude and talent were a credit to yourselves and the North.

24 NORTHERN TRI-REGIONAL OFFICIALS’ GROUP (T& F)

I would like to thank Judith Temperton and all staff of the Northern Office for all the administrative help I have received in sending out the availability letters, appointment notices and other paperwork. I would also like to thank all the members of the Northern Tri-Regional Officials’ Group for their help and assistance during the last twelve months.

This is the ninth year that the Northern Tri-Regional Group (NTROG) has operated. It retains responsibility for the following areas: (a) Appointment of officials to Northern indoor and outdoor events; (b) Nominations of officials for National indoor and outdoor appointments; (c) Nominations of candidates to sit on National Discipline Peer Groups; (d) Recommendations to Peer Groups for upgrading candidates to Level 3 (e) Recommendations to Peer Groups for officials to be placed on IMO (International Meeting Officials) list.

The current NTROG group consists of: Chairman : Finlay Galloway (L4R/C – North-West Region) Honorary Secretary : Paul Yates (L4R/C – North-West Region) Hon Sec (Designate) John Driscoll (L4 – North-West Region) Championship Secretary: Malcolm Fletcher (L4R/C – Yorks / Humber Region)

Selectors – Field Group: Mick Frazer (L4 – North-East Region) Dean Williams (L4R/C – North-West Region) Malcolm Rogers (L4R/C – Yorkshire and Humber Region) Selectors – Starting and Marking Group Malcolm Dewell (L4 – North-East Region) David Brown, CBE (L4R/C – North-West Region) Peter Lord (L4 – Yorkshire and Humber Region) Selectors – Timekeeping Group: Michael Brown (L4 – North-East Region) Ron Scott (L4 – North-West Region) Roger Everton (L4R/C – Yorkshire and Humber Region) Selector – Photofinish Group: Margaret Rushton (L4R/C – North-West Region) Selectors – Track Group: Tony Livingstone (L4 – North-East Region) Finlay Galloway (L4R/C – North-West Region) Dr Moira Gallagher, MBE (L4R/C – Yorkshire and Humber Region)

Northern Indoor Events Due to the continuing success of combining the U17 age group into the same event as the Senior and U20 age groups, it was decided to keep this as a two-day event, held in January. This meant that the U15 and U13 age groups would again be competing in their own one-day championships in February as in previous years. A total of twenty-seven officials withdrew from the three days of competitions, which was a massive increase compared to last year’s figure of eight. Reasons given were very diverse, from “Clashes with a family engagement”, and “Attending Peer Group Meeting”, to either not giving any reason for withdrawing, to simply not turning up at the event!

Northern Outdoor Events and Officials' Withdrawals The outdoor season once again consisted of five days of Championship competition. Two days for the Senior / U20 event at Manchester, one day for Northern Inter-Counties event at Leigh and two days for the U13 / U15 / U17 event at Wavertree. In the above events, 15 (12 in 2017) officials withdrew from the Sen / U20 event, at 25 the Inter-Counties, we lost a total of 9 (13 in 2017) officials and at the U15 / U17 Championships, a total of 25 (22 in 2017) withdrew.

Again, there were various reasons given for the withdrawals, most of them totally valid and some not so. One major factor for withdrawals at the Senior Championships in Manchester was the fact that the event clashed with the County Schools Championship on the same weekend. This sometimes leaves the event with fewer than required officials for various disciplines. As in 2017, the event reserves were used up very quickly, leaving some disciplines short of officials. In fact, at the Manchester event, Call Room operated with just three officials on each day, rather than the eight required.

Forthcoming Indoor Season The northern area is again planning to hold two open indoor meetings at EIS Sheffield as follows: Open Meeting 1 – Saturday 17 th November 2018; Open Meeting 2 – Saturday 01 st December 2018.

The Northern Athletics Indoor Championships will be held over a total of three days in 2019. It has been decided that, as last years’ format was so successful, it would remain the same this year as well. Consequently, the indoor championship dates are:

Senior / U20 / U17 Indoor Championship – Day 1: Saturday 12 th January 2019 Senior / U20 / U17 Indoor Championship – Day 2: Sunday 13 th January 2019 U13 / U15 Indoor Championship: Sunday 03 rd February 2019

The northern area is responsible for providing the majority of the Ancillary Officials for the National Indoor events at EIS Sheffield once again. This is a great opportunity for our Level 1 / 2 / 3 and non-IMO Level 4 officials to both be involved in working, and gaining experience at a televised event. As more of the England Athletics' Championship events move from Bedford to Manchester, this means that more non-technical roles will need to be filled.

International Meeting Officials' List (IMO) There will be no list of IMO officials published for 2019

Indoor Championship Events The availability letters have already been sent out to all officials for the indoor events.

The selection meetings of the Northern TRNG will be on: Sunday 25 th November 2018 NA indoor selections and recommendations to UKA for national indoor appointments. Sunday 08 th January 2019 (TBC) NA outdoor selections and recommendations to UKA for national outdoor appointments.

Retirement of Northern Officials' Secretary I have held the post of Northern Tri-Regional Officials' Group Honorary Secretary for the last twelve years and I have, for the most part, thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I have taken the system from postal mail-based to electronic, with the odd exception where a few officials did not have access to Email. I feel the time is now right to hand over the reigns to someone who may be able to refine the system further and make it even more efficient. I am happy to report that John Driscoll, a Level 4 Field Official, and the current County Officials' Secretary for Cumbria, has accepted the position and will take over fully from myself after the 2019 Indoor Season, which I will help John to administer.

33 AAA STANDARDS SCHEME REPORT

AAA Standards 2017-18

Sales of Standards Badges continue to be buoyant. The two main championships at which the most badges sold, to the benefit of Northern Athletics, are the Age Group Championships and the Inter Counties. Unfortunately, for Northern Athletics, the vast majority of badges are sold online with PayPal payments going straight to the AAA. This is vividly illustrated by the sales in October 2018 with just fourteen badges sold on behalf of Northern Athletics but 440 on behalf of the AAA.

Revision of the Standards, to be effective from next April for two years, is now taking place. It is noted that the Under 13 Boys 75 metres has been deleted from the Power of 10 so there will be no standard for that event. It is possible that the new standards will include road races which will have to be based on chip timing. It would appear that a number of events at 800m and 1500m are being held on the roads using chip timing – particularly in the south.

Once again my thanks to clubs, who order badges in bulk for their presentation evenings; to Margaret Crompton who continues to steadily sell badges at various meeting in her area; and to Jean and John Simpson, who have stood in for my wife and I at Championships when we have been otherwise engaged.

Edwin Bellamy
