Súčasný anglický bádateľ Richard Knight z Leedsu, člen Spoločnosti historických záhrad prejavil mimoriadny záujem o štúdium Nebbienovho pôsobenia u nás a de facto inicioval aj usporiadanie tejto konferencie. Ján Supuka, odb. as. Ružiarke grófke Márie Henriete Chotekovej, neustále rezonujúcej v európskom kontexte, sa venovala Radoslava Ristovská (doplnila bibliografické údaje k vybraným knihám z jej knižnice) a Alena Krátka, téme ruží Ivan Lukáčik a Vladimír Ježovič. Ľubici Feriancovej a tlmočníkovi Attilovi Tóthovi, rovnako i obetavým pracovníkom SNM–Hudobného múzea. Edita Bugalová, riaditeľka SNM-Hudobného múzea 6 01 VÝZNAMNÉ ANGLICKÉ PARKY NA SLOVENSKU1 Ľubica F e r i a n c o v á Slovenská poľnohospodárska univerzita, Fakulta záhradníctva a krajinného inžinierstva, Nitra Úvod Podľa Florentskej charty z roku 1981 sú plochy historickej zelene (parky a záhrady) kultúrnym dedičstvom. Pamiatkovom zákone evidovaných 364 pamiatkových objektov kultúrnych pamiatok v kategórii historická zeleň a z nich 61 objektov je zároveň Chráneným areálom v zmysle Zákona 543/2002 o Ochrane prírody a krajiny. V kategórii A1 + A2 architektonicky a biologicky významné mimoriadne sú zaradené Betliar, Sad Janka Kráľa, parky pri kaštieľoch v Dolnej Krupej, v Topoľčiankach, v Budmericiach, Smoleniciach, Brodzanoch, Palárikove, Novej Vsi nad Žitavou, Hlohovci, Lednických Rovniach, Továrnikoch, Turčianskej Štiavnička, Mošovciach, Svätom Antone, Podrečanoch, Haliči, Veľkom Blhu, Spišský Štiavnik, Strážky a ďalšie. Do kategórie A3, čo predstavujú architektonicky a biologicky významné regionálne sú zaradené napr. parky vo Voderadoch, Jánovej Vsi, Orlové, Horné Semerovce, Horné Lefantovce, Mojmírovce, Tajná, Veľká Maňa, Hajná Nová Ves, Beladice, Fričovce, Župčany, Budimír ai.). Kategóriu B reprezentujú významné krajinárske a historicky – nadpriemerné parky pri kaštieľoch v Ivanke pri Dunaji, Gabčíkove, v Cíferi, v Klátovej Novej Vsi, Svätom Petri, Šali, v Gemeri, Tornali,

  • Early Rose Breeding in Germany
Early Rose Breeding in Germany Foreword When Brent C. Dickerson asked me to write an article about early rose breeding in Germany, I did not know what I had gotten myself into. I know now. Days on end of reading in old books and dusty magazines, and quite a lot of research work–quite frustrating all too often. But this is only half of the truth: I have, on the other hand, spent many pleasurable hours when, at the end, I found what I was looking for. Finally, I was able to put together some facts and information which you will find below. I’m fully aware that the results in some cases resemble a fishing net, giving only some strands to pull and a lot of holes surrounded by–sometimes rather thin cords. If it was sometimes difficult to obtain the information from the time all this is about, it was–and is to me–quite impossible to find out if certain cultivars from breeders I have mentioned still exist or not. My information comes mainly from the great inventories of roses such as the Sangerhausen inventory, the inventory of the Deutsches Rosarium Dortmund (DRD), and other rosaries as well as several online resources, among them helpmefind.com, and quite a lot from searches with the major search engines. I am quite optimistic that many cultivars which are presumed lost still exist in private gardens, even if the owner does not know that ‘this lovely old rose over there in the corner from my Grandma’s garden’ is maybe the last existing plant of a certain cultivar.

VOLUME 2 3: JULY 201 2 World Rose News NEWSLETTER of the WORLD FEDERATION of ROSE SOCIETIES Japan Blooms for the 12th International Heritage Roses Conference A section of the "Wedding Garden" at the Akao Herb and Rose Garden Photo Sue Zwar 1 PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE July, 2012 WFRS President 2009 - 2012 Dear Rosarians of the World Federation of Rose Societies, The Heritage Convention in Sakura, Japan with a pre- and post-convention tour was most enjoyable. Despite all the difficulties following their national disaster last year, our Japanese friends worked positively with great courage and determination and the result was a most successful 12 days with excellent lectures, great camaraderie among rose friends, interesting excursions and some of the most beautiful rose gardens. The details will be reported elsewhere in this publication. During my visit to Japan when discussing the 16 th World Roses Convention with delegates, it was pointed out to me more than once that attending two conventions in the same year is not a financial possibility for many people. This concern was raised by the South African organising committee at the time of the Japanese postponement. It was generally felt that it would not affect the numbers in South Africa. As at the early bird cut-off we were only halfway there. We are not in any way suggesting that Japan has made all the difference but it is something to be borne in mind for future years. I therefore urge all Rose Societies the World over to encourage your members to take advantage of a wonderful opportunity to visit the continent of Africa where there is so much that is different to see and where the value of the local currency is in favour of the visitors.

Several minor French nurserymen in the 19th century renamed popular roses and sold them under those new names. Imagine discovering once the roses were in bloom that two differently named roses were the same. In the United States during the 1890s, a California nurseryman A. F. Boardman and his partner filed bankruptcy for their Auburn nursery. But it was soon learned that Boardman was not above suspicion and had done so fraudulently, having transferred $7000 worth of nursery stock to his wife. Between the years of 1851 and 1881, the Parisian rose breeder Margottin—not above suspicion —at least twice seems to have passed off a rose bred by someone else as his own creation.
