In the United States C. tweedyi is known from the Wenatchee Mountains of Washington State chiefly in Chelan County and also occurring in northern portions of Kittitas County. The recorded occurrences of the species range from South Navarre Peak in north, south to near the town of Liberty, west to Ladies Pass and east to Twenty-Five Mile Creek [6]. It reportedly grows in the Methow Valley of Okanogan County, Washington yet, current reports neglect to record any Okanogan populations [1]. -

This work uses existing phylogenetic metadata to elaborate a new cladistic taxonomic synthesis, and clarifies morphological circumscriptions of several poorly known species. A total of 20 taxa are validated, seven new and 13 necessary nomenclatural recombinations. Hypotheses of Montiaceae historical biogeography and phenotypic evolution are evaluated in light of recent metadata. Key words: Montiaceae, taxonomy, phylogeny, ecology, phylogeography, evolution. 1. Introduction This work presents a new cladistic taxonomy of Montiaceae (Portulacineae) and several of its included taxa, along with notes on the diagnostics of certainly poorly known species and a summary of new interpretations of phylogeography and phenotypic and ecological evolution. The present work includes 20 nomenclatural novelties. However, the whole of the novelty is greater than the sum of these parts. The generic circumscriptions and diversity estimates are modified from Hernández-Ledesma et al. (2015).The suprageneric taxonomy is the first proposed since McNeill (1974) and the only phylogenetic one. Critical reevaluation of certain common and usually misidentified Chilean taxa is the first since Reiche (1898). Existing metadata are interpreted as evidence for a hybrid origin of a genus. -

Hershkovitz1 6 1Santiago, Chile 7 [email protected] 8 9 10 ABSTRACT 11 12 The present paper reviews evidence for ecological evolution of Montiaceae. Montiaceae 13 (Portulacineae) comprise a family of ca. 275 species and ca. 25 subspecific taxa of flowering plants 14 distributed mainly in extreme western America, with additional endemism elsewhere, including other 15 continents and islands. They have diversified repeatedly across steep ecological gradients. Based on narrative 16 analysis, I argue that phylogenetic transitions from annual to perennial life history have been more frequent 17 than suggested by computational phylogenetic reconstructions. I suggest that a reported phylogenetic 18 correlation between the evolution of life history and temperature niche is coincidental and not causal. I 19 demonstrate how statistical phylogenetic comparative analysis (PhCA) missed evidence for marked moisture 20 niche diversification among Montiaceae. I discount PhCA evidence for the relation between Montiaceae 21 genome duplication and ecological diversification. Based on the present analysis of Montiaceae evolution, I 22 criticize the premise of the prevalent statistical approach to PhCA, which tests Darwinian -

International Rock Gardener ISSN 2053-7557 Number 132 The Scottish Rock Garden Club December 2020 ---International Rock Gardener--- December 2020 I doubt that many people will have reason to look back on this year with any pleasure – as the ‘Year of the Covid19 Pandemic’ there has been too much loss to engender fondness in most hearts. Family members and friends have been taken by the disease, disruptions of all kinds have ruined plans for events, travel and projects around the world in every sphere. Even in the year to come, it is unsure if the way of life for all, including plants lovers will be able to proceed in any form that we have come to regard as ‘usual’ – instead we must continue to find ways and means to discover some form of ‘new normal’ – not the happiest of prospects but there have been great strides made with international internet meetings which could remain as we get to grips with new possibilities to make our existence bearable. I do believe that those with an interest in plants and the natural world have an advantage in having something so hopeful in these times. Our increased concentration and study of our plants over the recent lockdowns has meant many are understanding the needs of the flora and fauna around us as never before – there also seems to have been a positive explosion in the level of interest in gardening and self-sufficiency over the last few months. How fortunate those of us with our own gardens really are - what a pity it is has taken a pandemic to highlight that! M.Y. -

ABSTRACT Sequences of the ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and the chloroplast DNA ycf3-trnS intergenic spacer were determined for 183 samples representing Chilean and non-Chilean taxa of western American Portulacaceae and their outgroups. The data refine previous inferences of generic circumscriptions and interrelations. In particular, the data reveal that an earlier circumscription of Cistanthe Spach is polyphyletic and also reveal a North American clade comprising Claytonia L., Lewisia Pursh, Lewisiopsis R. Govaerts, and Montia L. Within the South American genera, two patterns emerge from the data: (1) in some cases, interspecific divergence is remarkably low given the markers employed and estimated number of species; and (2) where divergence of one or both markers offer phylogenetic resolution, there is conflict between them and/or with morphology. The patterns can be evaluated in terms of two phenomena: (1) morphological/ecological radiation proceeding much faster than sequence divergence; and (2) frequent hybridization. In the latter case, the gene tree patterns may distort the true timing and cladistic pattern of morphological and ecological diversification. At present, the degree to which evidence for hybridization among the Chilean Portulacaceae will prove to be the rule or the exception is unclear. -

DARRACH Herbarium, Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture University of Washington Seattle, Washington 98195 [email protected] ABSTRACT Lomatium roneorum Darrach, sp. nov. , is a narrowly endemic species of probable conservation concern found growing on friable arkosic sandstone substrates of the lower-middle Eocene Chumstick Formation and Mesozoic acidic metamorphic substrates in Chelan County along the east slope of the Cascade Mountains in central Washington state. The species is morphologically distinct in the genus. Lomatium roneorum is distinguished from the apparently closely related L. cuspidatum Mathias & Constance, which is mostly restricted to ultramafic rock. The new species produces more crowded and numerous glaucous leaflets, shorter blunt-tipped leaflets lacking the elongate apiculus of L. cuspidatum , larger fruits with shorter pedicels, and yellowish flowers, typically with a distinctive irregular abaxial russet wash rather than the reddish-purple-brown flowers diagnostic of L. cuspidatum . Additionally, plants of L. roneorum often produce an involucre composed of a few typically broad bracts. The species is known from four locations near the towns of Leavenworth and Plain, Washington. Lomatium is by far the largest genus in Apiaceae in North America. A parade of newly- described species and infraspecific taxa over the last decade demonstrates that there remains undocumented biodiversity in the genus.
