The Twenty-Third Sunday of the Year

Canon Paul Writes…

St. Mark, whose Gospel narrative we hear today, begins by telling us that Jesus is travelling by way of Sidon to go through the Decapolis region. The visitor to Israel/Palestine will discover that this was a circuitous route which didn’t make too much geographical sense. The strange geography is an indicator that there will be more to the incident that Mark describes than

immediately meets the eye. The route via Sidon and the Decapolis took Jesus through gentile territory which meant that the people Jesus met were not Jewish on the whole and did not share that faith. The view of the Jewish people was that those who lived in Decapolis were devoid of any faith at all.

So the man is brought who was deaf and could not speak effectively. His life and world were closed to communication with others and with God. With the greatest sensitivity and using the traditional healing procedures of the day, Jesus gave to the man his hearing and his ability to communicate normally. Jesus does this by the power of God and the Holy Spirit as Mark points out: “Then looking up to heaven Jesus sighed and said Ephphatha, that is, be opened”. A man of no particular faith or religious affiliation, as far as we can tell, encounters a healing and life changing experience in his meeting with Jesus. In that event we are given an example of what the Christian mission is about: bringing to those whose lives are closed to the life giving communication of God, a life changing encounter with Jesus. The Church in its wisdom remembers the experience of the deaf man each time we baptise a person. The minister touches the ears and mouth of the person and says this prayer: “The Lord Jesus made the deaf hear and the dumb speak. May he soon touch your ears to receive his word, and your mouth to proclaim his faith to the praise and glory of God the Father.” That openness to the word of God and the readiness to proclaim our faith to others is a gift to all of us who have faith in Jesus. Do we make that gift part of our daily prayer and our daily living?
