Genealogy of the New Jersey Rolls Which Was Prepared by Martha Roll of Hollow Rock, TN, and Thelma Lynn Roll of Huntington, IN GENEALOGY of the NEW JERSEY ROLLS Presented to the HISTORICAL TRAILS SOCIETY PINE GROVE, KENTUCKY by MRS. BOX 501 HOLLOW ROCK, TENNESSEE 38342 and THELMA LYNN (ROLL) KENNEDY 1835 DEAN STREET HUNTINGTON, INDIANA 46750 APRIL 16, 1984 1 INTRODUCTION This genealogy was prepared primarily from data contained in The Genealogy of the New Jersey Rolls which was prepared by Martha Roll of Hollow Rock, TN, and Thelma Lynn Roll of Huntington, IN. The copy I worked from was dated 1984 and had been presented to the Ancestral Trails Historical Society in Vine Grove, KY, and later given to the North Hardin Library in Radcliff, KY, and has since disappeared. The title page of the volume is reproduced on the next page. I appreciate the work put into this genealogy, and have made every effort to keep the data as accurate as possible. In some cases, this has meant making changes to or adding data to the material prepared by Martha and Thelma. Use the index to find the name of the person you are interested in. Each person will normally be listed twice, once as a child, and once as a parent. The notable exception to this general rule is in the case of common names such as John Roll. In this case, and a few others, you will find numerous page numbers listed, and will have to check each one to find the person you are interested in. Once you have found the person you are interested in, you may trace his/her ancestry the checking the “Continued from” line at the top center of the page, and tracing the family line backwards by referring to the appropriate family charts. Also, you can trace the descendants of the individuals by following the “Continued on” line associated with each child. When no family chart number is given, it simply means that I have no further information on that child. For example, in looking up Wesley Roll in the index, we find him listed on page 19 and 67. Looking at page 67, we find Wesley Roll listed as the parent. Looking at the heading, we find that his family chart is continued from chart 29. Turning back to chart 29, we find that it is on page 19, and that Wesley is listed here as a child. If we wanted to continue tracing his ancestry, we would look at the top of page 19, and find that we would need to go to chart number 23. Wesley had 13 children. One was named Jonathan Smith Roll. If we wanted to trace his descendants, we would look at his entry and find that it was continued on family chart number 151 and so would turn to that chart to find more information a Jonathan Smith Roll and his children.     Benjamin Thompson, An Early Settler of Penfield, N.Y. By: Jane Thompson Kuitems Benjamin Thompson likely moved to the town of Northfield, Ontario County, New York, (later Boyle and now named Penfield) 1from Vermont in the spring of 1805.2 His family was one of several early “Thompson” families who settled in Penfield. 3 It appears that his eleven children moved from Vermont with him although how long some of them stayed in Penfield before moving on west, is unknown. Benjamin and his sons purchased portions of lots 2,3,4. 4 Many of the deeds were not recorded for years, so the exact timing of the early purchases is not always clear. These lots were located in the southeasterly part of town. 5 Two Thompson homes were built on the corners of what was then Smith Road (now Gloria Drive) and Route 441 near Lovetts Corner. 6 Benjamin’s ancestors were early settlers in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. His line can be traced to David Thomson of Thomson’s Island in Boston Harbor. His paternal grandfather for whom he was named lived in Worcester County, Massachusetts near the Rhode Island border. He was one of the original proprietors in Cheshire County, N.H. in the area of Swanzey. Although grandfather Benjamin owned land in New Hampshire he does not appear to have lived there, however five of his sons, including Benjamin’s father moved to Swanzey, N.H. 7 Benjamin’s father Samuel Thompson (1733-1808) was married twice. He had one known son by his first marriage.8 His first wife likely died shortly after the birth of that child for Samuel remarried in 1761 Rhoda Smith.9 Rhoda and Samuel became the parents of eleven children with Benjamin being the eldest.

    CHILTON HISTORICAL MURAL The imagery in the Chilton mural spans 75 yrs. from 1840 through 1915 and is portrayed in a ‘hand-tinted’ image. This style of imagery was a popular technique of the era bringing color into the monochromatic imagery of the day. Sitting firmly on the Manitowoc, Chilton’s matriarch, Catherine Stanton can be seen prominently positioned in front of the former State Street bridge. Just beyond the ironclad bridge you can see a suggestion of a fading grist mill that the Stanton’s erected and was fundamental in Chilton’s early development during the time. Catherine is flanked on her right by members of a Ho-Chunk family, each of which have tribal beads and patterns embedded into their clothing. Catherine's image is a hybrid of two different photos of her and she adorns a working-class dress of the era. Mrs. Stanton is flanked on her left by both Civil War veterans Harrison Hobart and George Breed. Both men were fundamental toward Chilton’s continued growth and prosperity after their Civil War military service concluded. Former Hotel Chilton and St. Mary’s parish stand as iconic backdrops for a section of the Chilton boys homecoming from the Great War. On the far right of the wall, an architectural sketch of the Malt House sits directly above Breeds shoulder. The central visuals are different tributes toward agriculture, each has a different emphasis but are all centrally positioned in their importance. In these options you will find two local women raking hay, and a group of farmers appear to be delighted by their new John Deere tractor.

    MARTH WINIFRED SWEET BONFILS By Debbie Barany If we look into the history of Chilton, and the surrounding communities we learn about the many fascinating stories of people who where born and raised in our part of Wisconsin. They left our communities with a solid foundation to go out into the world and create their own mark on history. One such person was Martha Winifred Bon- fils – A pioneer women in the newspaper in- dustry. With her good looks and lively spirit, she often would risk her life, or engage in elaborate stunts to get a scoop. She was as colorful as her exposes’ and had a career spanning over 50 years. Proving to be one of the most versatile journalists of her time. Martha was born October 14, 1863 to Union Brevet Brigadier General Benjamin Sweet, who served as Colonel of the 21st Wisconsin Infantry during the Civil War and who later was ap- pointed Commander at the famed Union prison, Camp Douglas in Chicago. Her mother was Lovisa Loveland Denslow Sweet. She spent her early years in cities like Chicago, New York and Washington as her family moved with the various jobs of her father. Her connection to the newspaper industry came thru her first cousin Alexander Sweet. Harold Frederick a famous London correspondent and Fannie Forrester, one of the earliest newspaper women in America were her second cousins. She began writing as an journalist for the Chicago Tribune, but landed a job at the San Fransico Examiner in 1890. At the Examiner she wrote under the name of Annie Laurie, as one of the most prominent "sob sisters", a label given female reporters who wrote human interest stories.

    The News-Sentinel 1948 Friday, January 2, 1948 J. Newton McQuern J. Newton McQUERN, 93, died in a Springfield, O., hospital on Wednesday, Dec. 31. For the past several years he has been living at the Pythian Home in Springfield. Mr. McQuersn suffered a fractured hip on Christmas morning and was immediately taken to the hospital. The deceased was born and reared in Rochster, but for a long number of years he engaged in the contracting busines in Canton, O. He retired from active business several yeas ago at which time entered the Pythian Home. Survivors are a grandson, James McQUERN, Canton, O.; a sister, Mrs. William ZELLER of Rochester and several nieces and nephews. He visited rlatives in Rochester every year and was enjoying exceptionally fair health up until his accident on Christmas Day. Funeral services were held today in Springfield and buriel will be made in a Navarre, O., cemetery, Saturday. William Elias Kinzie William Elias KINZIE, farmer residing in the Oak Grove neighborhood near Culver, passed away Wednesday evening at Woodlawn hospital. He had been in ill health a week. Mr. Kinzie was born at Silver Lake, Ind., on December 28, 1869, and had resided in the vicinity of Culver for practically all of his life.
