Commune De Ghoy COMMUNE DE GHOY Matrice cadastrale consultée sur le site Web "Patrimoine majeur de Wallonie" du ministère wallon de l'équipement et des transports Dépouillement réalisé par Danny DELCAMBRE, Rue Halbardier 49, B - 6700 ARLON C'est en 1134 qu'apparaît la première mention de Ghoy dont le territoire n'a livré à ce jour aucune trouvaille archéologique.Faute d'étude lui ayant été consacrée, on ne sait pratiquement rien sur la seigneurie primitive avant son intégration, vers le milieu du XIVème siècle, dans la terre et seigneurie d'Enghien dont elle fera partie jusqu'à la fin de l'Ancien Régime. En attendant un réexamen approfondi des sources, les seuls éléments dont on dispose permettent tout au plus d'exclure sa dépendance de la pairie de Silly et de supposer qu'elle aurait d'abord été la propriété de la puissante famille flamande des Pamele-Audenarde, par ailleurs largement possessionnée dans la région. Quoi qu'il en soit, l'hôpital Notre-Dame à la Rose de Lessines et plusieurs abbayes détinrent également des biens dans la localité, à savoir celles de Cambron, Ghislenghien, Saint-Adrien de Grammont et de Maagdendaal à Pamele, sans oublier celle de Saint-Ghislain qui fut également collateur de la cure de l'église Saint-Médard. Cela étant, un autre problème important reste lui aussi posé: celui de l'appartenance possible de Ghoy au duché de Brabant jusqu'au début du XVème siècle. Sa situation aux confins du Hainaut et de la Flandre et son voisinage avec Lessines vont en tout cas amener le village à souffrir des conflits et des guerres dans lesquels cette région frontière fut impliquée jusqu'au milieu du XVIIIème siècle. Sous l'Ancien Régime, l'agriculture, la fabrication des toiles de lin et le commerce en résultant constituaient les activités essentielles des habitants, Ghoy ayant toujours eu un caractère rural. Au XIXème siècle, 95% de son territoire sont consacrés à l'agriculture qui produit surtout des céréales mais aussi des plantes industrielles et notamment de la chicorée, le lin et son travail étant toutefois abandonnés. cela s'ajoutent une appréciable production fruitière et la culture des plantes médicinales, spécialité de la région de Lessines comme d'ailleurs celle du tabac, introduite à Ghoy à la fin du siècle. Ayant fourni un appoint idéal pour une agriculture basée sur des petites et moyennes exploitations, ces deux cultures vont néanmoins régresser, en particulier sous les effets de la concurrence étrangère qui, pour le tabac, se fait sentir après la première guerre mondiale et pour les plantes médicinales, après 1945. Aussi et malgré les efforts des pouvoirs publics, n'occupent-elles plus de nos jours qu'une place restreinte dans une agriculture à laquelle Ghoy affecte encore 85 % de son territoire mais qui est beaucoup plus orientée vers l'élevage, tout en continuant à réserver une place de choix aux céréales sans négliger les plantes industrielles et la culture fruitière. Cela étant, la commune n'en a pas moins été fortement touchée par l'exode rural qui constitue l'un des facteurs de sa dépopulation considérable (plus de 60 % depuis 1846).
