Defending champion Stanford, 30-1, had its 46-match winning streak snapped and was denied its 11th NCAA crown. After splitting the singles, 3-3, Georgia took the lead when the duo of Esther Knox and Aarthi Venkatesan captured a quick 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles. Stanford’s Lauren Kalvaria and Gabriela Lastra returned the favor and evened the match by scoring a comfortable 8-2 decision at No. 3. In the deciding doubles finale, Georgia’s second-ranked duo of Marissa Catlin and Lori Grey bolt- ed to a 6-1 advantage, only to find themselves suddenly down, 7-6, to Stanford’s fourth-ranked Teryn Ashley and Marissa Irvin. Catlin-Grey battled for an 8-8 tie, fell behind 2-0 in the tiebreak- er, then rallied for a 7-3 triumph to garner the title. Individual doubles play produced the first three-time NCAA champion as California’s Amy Jensen teamed with Claire Curran to defeat Catlin-Grey in the final.
