Notes: The Complete Peerage vol.X,p.253,note f. She was brought up by her grandfather, Lord Burghley, who wanted her to marry Henry Wriothesley, third Earl of Southampton, whose wardship he held. When Wriothesley refused to wed her in 1591, he was fined £5000. After a period as a maid of honor, she married William Stanley, sixth Earl of Derby, in the presence of Queen Elizabeth. They had waited to be sure his sister-in-law’s posthumous child would be a girl, making his title secure, before they wed. This wedding is sometimes said to have been the occasion for the first performance of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, although there are other contenders. In late 1596 and again in late 1597, Elizabeth was rumored to be having an affair with Robert Devereux, second Earl of Essex.

He refused the match and in Apr 1599, Bridget married Francis Norreys of Rycote, instead. They had one child, Elizabeth, and had separated by 1606. In 1621, Norreys was created Earl of Berkshire. Bridget died between Dec 1630 and Mar 1631.

Notes: The Complete Peerage vol.X,p.253,note f. She was brought up by her grandfather, Lord Burghley. At fifteen, she was the subject of a poem by Nathaniel Baxter that lamented her lack of a dowry. She married Phillip Herbert, it was said to be a love match. The nuptials were celebrated with a masque at court and King James gave the newlyweds land worth £10,000 at Shurland, Kent. Herbert was one of the King’s favorites and the honors and gifts continued to roll in. In 1605, he was created, Earl of Montgomery. Susan was at court that year to dance in The Masque of Blackness and both Susan and Phillip danced in Hymenaei the following Jan. They had seven sons and three daughters, three of whom died young. Susan’s niece, Elizabeth Norreys, her sister Bridget’s daughter, was living in the Earl of Montgomery’s house in 1622, giving rise to rumors that she was his mistress, but Elizabeth’s elopement with Edward Wray early that year tends to cast doubt on that allegation. Like her husband, Susan was a patron of the arts.

According to Arthur Wilson, Life of James I (1643), the Earl of Oxford was of no reputation in his youth, being very debauched and riotous, and, having no means, maintained it by sordid and unworthy ways. On 22 Jul 1611 Oxford's mother Elizabeth complained against John Hunt, Henry's second cousin and his "bedmate", who seduces her son into evil courses, leads him to extravagance, and prejudices him against her authority. Earl Henry died of wounds received at the siege of Breda.

Notes: The Complete Peerage vol.XIIpII,p.257-260. began his military career as the lieutenant of his brother, Sir Francis' Company in 1590. Thenceforward he was continually on active service in the Low Countries, and, like his brother, took part in the Cadiz expedition of 1596; at Nieuwport and Ostend Sir Horace (who had been knighted at Cadiz) held command of some importance. Died from apoplexy whilst calling for fresh Horatio Vere, Baron Salmon, and reaching out his plate to take it from one that Vere of Tilbury carves, he was not able to draw his hand back again, but sunk attributed to Michiel down. They instantly carried him to bed, where he died within Jansz. van Miereveldt 1629 two hours. A week later he was buried in the vault with his brother, Sir Francis Vere, at Westmister Abbey.
