  • Power Rankings: NHL Coaches in Their First Year with Their Teams
Power Rankings: NHL Coaches in Their First Year With Their Teams Author : matthewzaffina NHL teams are notoriously quick to change coaches. Even talented coaches that oversee playoff squads aren’t immune to turnover. Last year, plenty of coaches got the ax: this year, plenty of new ones will get their first crack at the quest for Lord Stanley’s cup. But which coach will be the best in his first year with his new team? Here are our power rankings. 7. John Hynes, New Jersey Devils Hynes, who made his name as a coach for the AHL’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, has a lot to prove. His record in the minors is impressive, but he’s now the youngest head coach in the NHL. 6. Peter DeBoer, San Jose Sharks DeBoer is the former coach of both the Florida Panthers and New Jersey Devils. He’s had mixed results, but he’s also had to deal with some really putrid rosters. His 2011 run to the Stanley Cup Final with New Jersey is the highlight of his career so far. The Sharks hope he can replicate it. DeBoer comes into a bit of a leadership vacuum, so motivation will be key. This squad missed the playoffs last year, but is in win-now mode this year. It’s going to be a tricky job. 5. Jeff Blashill, Detroit Red Wings Blashill is 41 and getting his first crack at head coaching at the NHL level. He earned the respect of the organization by coaching the Grand Rapids Griffins, and he’s also coached in the college ranks.

Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips October 17, 2019 Henrique scores twice as Anaheim rallies to beat Buffalo 5-2 By Joe Reedy Associated Press October 17, 2019 ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Ryan Getzlaf and Anaheim’s power-play unit put plenty of work in leading up to Wednesday’s game against the Buffalo Sabres in trying to jump start the unit that had gone scoreless in the first six games. Getzlaf and the Ducks ended up getting their first power-play goal at the most opportune time. His goal midway through the second period ended up being the go-ahead goal for Anaheim in a 5-2 victory. “It is nice to get rewarded and have all the hard work pay off,” Getzlaf said. “Even early in the game, we had some good movement and shots but couldn’t score.” Led by Adam Henrique’s two goals and Jakob Silfverberg’s three points (goal, two assists), Anaheim rallied after Buffalo scored the first two goals. Rickard Rakell had a goal and an assist, and Josh Manson added two assists for Anaheim, which has won its first three home games for the first time in five seasons. John Gibson made 31 saves for his fourth win of the season. Getzlaf gave the Ducks the lead at 9:14 of the second period when he fired a one-timer after a cross-ice pass by Sam Steel. It was their first goal with the man advantage in 18 opportunities, ending their second-longest drought to start a season. “There’s still lots of work to do but it’s a relief to finally get one in there,” Anaheim coach Dallas Eakin said.

Today’s News Clips Jan. 9, 2020 Chicago Tribune Robin Lehner is ready to return from a knee injury, but Dylan Strome will miss at least one game with a sprained ankle Jimmy Greenfield Jan. 8, 2020 The Blackhawks finally received some good news on the injury front Wednesday. The team sent goalie Kevin Lankinen back to Rockford, paving the way for Robin Lehner to return after he sat out two games with a right knee injury suffered last week against the Canucks. How much time Dylan Strome will miss after spraining his right ankle in Tuesday’s 2-1 loss to the Flames is still a bit murky. Strome was at the United Center on Wednesday and walking around without crutches, but Hawks coach Jeremy Colliton said he will not play Thursday against the Predators. “It’s still pretty soon after,” Colliton said. “We’ll know more as we get a little further away.” The Hawks are already without forwards Andrew Shaw (concussion), Brandon Saad (right ankle) and Drake Caggiula (concussion). There isn’t a timetable for Shaw’s return, but Colliton said Saad is “getting better” and the initial target of playing in mid-January hasn’t changed. Colliton also said Caggiula was "close" to playing after being out since Nov. 10. Lehner will be available to play against the Predators after Corey Crawford went 1-1 while stopping 45 of 49 shots in starts against the Red Wings and Flames. Lehner initially believed his knee was fine after the Canucks’ Tanner Pearson fell into him late in the third period on Jan.

  • Buffalo Sabres Digital Press
Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips December 10, 2019 Ralph Krueger changed an entire country's approach to hockey. Next: Buffalo. By Lance Lysowski The Buffalo News December 10, 2019 The 60-year-old coach is applying the same motivational techniques, defensive foundation on ice and patient approach that made Swiss hockey competitive against the best in the world. Ralph Krueger's eyes swelled with tears as he stood among the crowd of 12,500 inside Stockholm's Ericsson Globe on May 19, 2013. Only a few weeks removed from his first season as a head coach in the National Hockey League, Krueger watched the fruits of what he calls his "life work" — Switzerland winning its first silver medal at the IIHF World Championship with a 5-1 loss to Sweden. Sixteen years earlier, Swiss hockey fans and media bristled when the gregarious, effervescent coach mentioned his goal of winning a medal on the sport's biggest stage. Watching the realization of that dream remains one of Krueger's fondest hockey memories, despite his not being behind the bench. "I'm extremely proud of what's happened to the program," said Krueger, now coach of the Buffalo Sabres. Krueger did not win a medal during his 13 years as Swiss coach; however, he did reshape the national team from a group of complacent club players into one of hockey's global powers and a hotbed for NHL talent. The project is similar to the one he has inherited in Buffalo, where the Sabres own the league's longest playoff drought. Krueger's latest project is equipped with far more talent and, in his opinion, is closer to achieving its goal.
