July 10th DERRYBAWN & CULLENTRAGH Park: Cars at Shea Elliot CP & Jack the Rags Route: Starting from Shea Elliot, we headed along a fine track past Cullentragh. After our suss, Hugh and myself turned right, down another fine track and picked up the Jack the Rags path, which curves around the slopes of Cullentragh down to our car. The REAL Lugs pushed up along the fine ridge of Derrybawn. They went at a cracking pace because they met Hugh & myself on the road. Hugh makes an early exit. No.15. July 24th. CARLINGFORD & SLIEVE FOYE Park: Cars: Regency Hotel 9.30 am Route: Drive to Carlingford & park at the castle. The walk starts at back of the town where we pick up the Tain Trail, a clear path that zig-zags uphill to the foot of Slieve Foye. Passing through a narrow gap between crags the summit is reached. The route is now north along a superb ridge,with dramatic views of the Mournes. The way back is by a forest road. ( This road maybe my little walk ! ) No.16. August 7th. FANCY from the Military Road Park: Cars Sheepbanks Br. & Bearmaveag Route: From the Military Road , we take a good track ( gently uphill ! ) across the bog and arrive Probably because he saw his at the cliffs of Fancy, with magnificent views over reflection in the mirror! Lugala. Following the track along the top of the cliffs, the track drops down towards the river. Keeping to the river bank, look for a handy crossing & head up to the Sheepbanks Br. ( I will just return from the cliffs by the way we came ) No.17. August 21st. DJOUCE and WHITE HILL Park: Cars at Glassnamullen Route: We head up the forest road which zig-zags uphill until coming out into the lovely valley called Masons Glen. A good green road climbs gently up to the boardwalk. The fit Lugs climb Djouce and perhaps visit the Coffin Stone. The way back is over White Hill by the boardwalk before turning left along a track by the woods. This good track turns back to the wood we came up by. ( I will go as far as I can this walk ). One hell of a telescope No.18. September 4th. TIBRADDEN & KILMASHOGUE Note : Leave car(s) in Kilmashogue Car Park Route: From the Tibradden Car Park, we follow a fine forest track up through the woods to the ridge and the tumulus, then on up to Fairy Castle. Then down to 3-Rock and on down to the tarmac road for a short distance before turning left along a forest road leading steeply back down to Kilmashogue Car Park. I will turn left before Fairy Castle along the W.W. path - if I get that far ! ! ! No.19. September 18th. LUGADROOHAUN VALLEY Park: Cars near Carrigshouk & Waterfall C.P. Route: Taking the track around the side of Carrigshouk above forest to upper Lugadroohaun valley Brothers of Birr as far as the end of the trees then turn back along the Glenmacnaas River and continue along by the river until the Waterfall car park is reached. I plan to leave a car at the spot halfway along the R115 from where I can drop down to the river, follow it upstream and hopefully meet the rest of the Lugs. No.20. October 2nd. LOUGHS BRAY Upper & Lower Park: Cars at 2 points on road & Inter.Centre Route: From the upper car park ( see map ) we head along a rough track above the upper lake until we reach the Eagle’s Crag. I hope to descend the crag with a brave companion or two and follow the track that brings us out by McGurk’s Cottage & car. The main party of Lugs continue around the upper lake before cutting across the heather to the road & on to the Interpretive Centre. Jack has “re-tyred” All walks rendezvous in Ballinteer House Car Park at 10 am, unless otherwise indicated. Please let me know ( 087 9790 973 ) if you want to meet along the way. WILLY’S SEAT Park: At bus terminus on Glencree Road Route: Starting up the lane, we go past the ‘Pet’s Cemetery’ and enter Annachrivy Wood. Turning left, the road climbs up by zig-zags to a track on the left, leading up to Raven’s Rock. The fit Lugs take a track going north west up to Prince William’s Seat & then follow a track due east to the W.W. Meanwhile, if I get to the W.W., we all follow the W.W. north then turn south in a big loop back to Annachrivy Wood & cars. No.22. October 30th. Windmills on my mind CHURCH MOUNTAIN to Donard Park: Cars at Athgreany & Hell Kettle Bridge. Route: From Athgreany Car Park, the track climbs steeply ( God help me , I hope I can do it ) to a cross- road. The track ahead leads up to Church summit. The track left goes around Church and is the one I will take. At the next crossroad, I will turn right, hopefully meeting the main party of Lugs coming down from Church and a short distance further on, we reach the cars. No.23. November 13th. THE DEVIL’S GLEN Park: Cars in the Glen C.P. & near Tiglin Route: Leaving a car near the road to Tiglin Centre, we drive on to the Glen Car Park. We follow the beautiful & spectacular high level path above the gorge before dropping down to the waterfall. Back Guardians of the Gate by forest trails, up past Tiglin Centre and onto the R763 and after a short distance, turn right down a forest road leading to the cars. No.24. November 27th. CRUAGH & MASSEY’S WOOD Park: Cars Massey’s C.P. & Military Road Route: Starting at the Bullaun Stone, we follow the track over Cruagh ( some careful navigation is needed! ) to a point marked with a red ‘A’ on the DMW map - this leads to the new boardwalk down to Cruagh wood. We then follow the forest ‘loop’ to the road & on down through Massey’s wood to the cars. I hope to have a car at the upper gate to Massey’s wood - I’m sure I’ll need it!. No.25. December 11th. “What’s the rush?” A PRE-CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION NOTE: Meet Avon Ri Hotel at 11am Route: Last years lunch was a great success, so lets do it again this year. We start with a gentle walk through woods & by the Blessington lake & end up with lunch in the Avon Ri overlooking the lake. The hotel does a ‘Senior Citizens’ Special. The plan is to park near Russborough, walk on the new walkway back to the Avon Ri. I would need to know what Lugs are interested, so I can let the hotel know. No.26. December 27th. THE DUBLIN MOUNTAIN WAY - Pt.1 Park: Cars at Golden Ball & Shankhill A POST CHRISTMAS SPECIAL! From the car park behind the pub in Shankhill, the A beautiful day way is clearly marked and goes along pleasant lanes & boreens to the woods of Barnaslingan. on the slopes of Tonelagee. There is an option to climb Carrickgollogan with its splendid views of the countryside and also to visit the Lead Mines Chimney. After the Scalp, we drop down to the main road & walk to Golden Ball. No.27. December 30th.( Note: Sat.) AROUND THE HILL OF HOWTH Park: NOTE: Cars Howth Station at 11am Route: An pre New Year walk by the sea. From the station, head for Balscadden and the cliff path. The fit Lugs continue around by the Baily & on to Red Rock. Climb up to Carrickbrack Road, then on up over Shielmartain & on by the golf course down to the village. My walk is to drive up to the summit & walk around by the cliff path to the harbour. The Flowing Tide awaits! Four sweet things on a Big Sugarloaf!
