    Animation Studies – Vol.2, 2007 Leslie Bishko The Uses and Abuses of Cartoon Style in Animation Introduction “Cartoon style” in animation broadly refers to animation design and movement that adheres to the 12 Principles of Animation, defined and developed at the Disney Studios. The Principles evolved through trial and error, by observing motion on-screen and noting what aspects of animated movement served the believability of the characters. To this day, the 12 Principles of Animation are known by all animators and used as a benchmark for good animation. Yet, these principles are not complete movement concepts. They influence specific movement patterns that are often applied without consideration of their effects, resulting in characterization that lacks authenticity. Viewers have come to expect that animated character performances portray the illusion of a living being. As a determining factor for believability in animation, authenticity functions on two levels. First, we suspend our disbelief and engage with the character; there is no question of the character’s aliveness. Second, through characterization, we experience an authentic being whose inner intent is communicated outwardly, and made unmistakably clear. Originating from the roots of 20th century modern dance, Laban Movement Analysis (LMA) is a conceptual framework for the observation, description and interpretation of human movement that offers a robust movement vocabulary. Where Animation Principles can potentially impose a specific style of animated movement, LMA is style-neutral and therefore excels at articulating components of style. Additionally, LMA addresses the relationship of intent to action, an innovative feature that aids us in the observation of authenticity which the Animation Principles lack.

    ASIATIC, VOLUME 6, NUMBER 2, DECEMBER 2012 The Hamlet Mash-Up1 Geoff Klock2 Borough of Manhattan Community College, City University of New York, USA Abstract Shakespeare’s Hamlet is one of the most famous works of art in the world, and has inspired countless interpretations, allusions, references and discussions. The author describes his creation of a video collage of Hamlet material, that shows, rather than claims, the ubiquity of Hamlet, and points toward what Shakespeare could look like after the advent of the Internet. Hamlet’s value as Hollywood shorthand is discussed, and some of the throwaway Hamlet references are seen to be more complex than they may first appear. Projects of a similar nature are discussed and encouraged. I pointed out, for example, that the basic plot of Hamlet is repeated in The Lion King. Some students nodded their heads but I felt like the point needed more illustration. In order to power their city, the need to collect kids’ screams. The kicker is that the monsters are more afraid of the kids than the kids are of them. And the yare getting harder to scare. Sulley and Randall work hard as they try to break the scream-collection record. But one day Sully accidentally lets a human child into their monster world and the monsters find out what being scared is really like.     PHOENIX C I N E M A 52 High Rd London N2 9PJ THE IRON GIANT Teacher Notes for Key Stage 1 & 2 THE FILM The Iron Giant is a 2-d cell-animated film, based on the story of The Iron Man by Ted Hughes. The basic storyline remains the same in both the book and film: a young boy uncovers the existence of a gigantic robot who has an insatiable appetite for metal! At first the giant is shunned by the local community for destroying their cars and telegraph poles, but Hogarth recognizes that the giant doesn’t mean any harm. Together, these two unlikely allies defeat a nasty government official who wants the Iron Giant destroyed. The film transports the setting of the story from the England of Hughes’ vision to 1950s Maine. The New England setting adds dimensions to the story. It’s set at the height of the Cold War, which draws parallels between the worries of the locals about the safety of the Iron Giant and the general paranoia that beset America at the time. Artistically, the film makes use of Maine’s characteristic autumnal colours. The impressive stature of the Iron Giant is emphasized by the placement of the character against a vivid blue or orange sky. Despite the drastic change of setting, the film does retain many of the key themes and morals of the book. Hughes’ book is often seen as an eco-fairytale which tells of the importance of tolerance. In fact, by the end of the book the Iron Man fulfils an important role for the planet, eating all the disused scrap metal.
