This is radio nowhere, This is radio nowhere, is there anybody alive out there? is there anybody alive out there? This is radio nowhere, Is there anybody alive out there? is there anybody alive out there? I was driving through the misty rain I was spinnin’ ’round a dead dial Searchin’ for a mystery train Just another lost number in a file Boppin’ through the wild blue Dancin’ down a dark hole Tryin’ to make a connection with you Just searchin’ for a world with some soul This is radio nowhere, is there anybody alive out there? This is radio nowhere, This is radio nowhere, is there anybody alive out there? is there anybody alive out there? This is radio nowhere, Is there anybody alive out there? is there anybody alive out there? Is there anybody alive out there? want to hear some rhythm I just want to feel your rhythm I just want to hear some rhythm I just want to feel your rhythm I just want to feel your rhythm I just want to feel your rhythm You’ll Be Comin’ Down White roses and misty blue eyes Red mornings, then nothin’ but gray skies A cup of coffee, a heart shot clean through The jacket you bought me gone daisy gray-blue You’re smiling now but you’ll find out They’ll use you up and spit you out now You’ll be comin’ down now baby Your head’s spinnin’ in diamonds and clouds You’ll be coming down But pretty soon it turns out What goes around, it comes around and You’ll be comin’ down You’ll be comin’ down now baby You’ll be coming down For a while you’ll go sparklin’ by What goes around, it comes around and Just another pretty thing on high You’ll be comin’ down Like a thief on a Sunday morning Easy street, a quick buck and true lies It all falls apart with no warning Smiles as thin as those dusky blue skies Your cinnamon sky’s gone A silver plate of pearls my golden child candy-apple green It’s all yours at least for a little while The crushed metal of your You’ll be fine long as your little flying machine pretty face holds out Then it’s gonna get pretty cold out You’ll be comin’ down now baby An empty stream of stars shooting by You’ll be coming down You got your hopes on high What goes around, it comes around and You’ll be comin’ down You’ll be comin’ down now baby You’ll be coming down What goes around, it comes around and You’ll be comin’ down Livin’ In The Future A letter come blowin’ in on an ill wind The earth it gave away, Somethin’ ’bout me and you the sea rose toward the sun Never seein’ one another again I opened up my heart to you Yeah, well I knew it’d come it got all damaged and undone Still I was struck deaf and dumb My ship Liberty sailed away on Like when we kissed, a bloody red horizon that taste of blood on your tongue The groundskeeper opened Don’t worry Darlin’, the gates and let the wild dogs run now baby don’t you fret I’m rollin’ through town, We’re livin’ in the future and a lost cowboy at sundown none of this has happened yet Got my monkey on a leash, Don’t worry Darlin’, got my ear tuned to the ground now baby don’t you fret My faith’s been torn asunder, We’re livin’ in the future and tell me is that rollin’ thunder none of this has happened yet Or just the sinkin’ sound Woke up Election Day, of somethin’ righteous goin’ under? skies gunpowder and shades of gray Don’t worry Darlin’, Beneath a dirty sun, I whistled my time away now baby don’t you fret Then just about sundown We’re livin’ in the future and You come walkin’ through town none of this has happened yet Your boot heels clickin’ Don’t worry Darlin’, Like the barrel of a pistol spinnin’ ’round now baby don’t you fret Don’t worry Darlin’, We’re livin’ in the future and now baby don’t you fret none of this has happened yet We’re livin’ in the future and Don’t worry Darlin’, none of this has happened yet now baby don’t you fret Don’t worry Darlin’, We’re livin’ in the future and now baby don’t you fret none of this has happened yet We’re livin’ in the future and None of this has happened yet none of this has happened yet None of this has happened yet None of this has happened yet None of this has happened yet You can’t sleep at night You can’t dream your dream Your fingerprints on file Your Own Left clumsily at the scene Worst Enemy Your own worst enemy has come to town The times they got too clear Your own worst enemy has come, to town So you removed all the mirrors Once the family felt secure Yesterday the people were at ease Now no one’s very sure Baby slept in peace You closed your eyes and saw her Your own worst enemy has come to town You knew who you were Your own worst enemy has come Everything is falling down Now your own worst enemy Your own worst enemy has come to town has come to town Your own worst enemy has come Your own worst enemy has come Everything is falling down Your world keeps turnin’ Your own worst enemy has come to town ’round and ’round But everything is upside down Your flag it flew so high Your own worst enemy has come to town It drifted into the sky There’s a face you know Staring back from the shop window The condition you’re in Now, you just can’t get out of this skin Gypsy Biker The speculators made their money On the blood you shed We’re just waitin’ on the phone Your Mama’s pulled Our Gypsy biker’s comin’ home the sheets up off your bed The profiteers on Jane Street We rode her into the foothills Sold your shoes and clothes Bobby brought the gasoline Ain’t nobody talking We stood ’round her in a circle ’cause everybody knows As she lit up the ravine We pulled your cycle out of the garage The spring high desert wind And polished up the chrome Rushed down on us Our Gypsy biker’s comin’ home all the way back home Sister Mary sits with your colors To the dead it don’t matter much Brother John is drunk and gone ’Bout who’s wrong or right This whole town’s been rousted You asked me that question Which side are you on I didn’t get it right The favored march up over the hill You slipped into your darkness In some fools parade Now all that remains Shoutin’ victory for the righteous Is my love for you brother But there ain’t much here but graves Lying still and unchanged Ain’t nobody talkin’ To them that threw you away You ain’t nothin’ but gone Our Gypsy biker’s comin’ home Now I’m out countin’ white lines Countin’ white lines and getting stoned My Gypsy biker’s coming home And the girls in their summer clothes In the cool of the evening light The girls in their summer clothes, Girls In Their pass me by Summer Clothes Frankie’s diner, an old friend Well, the streetlights on the edge of town shine down on Blessing Avenue The neon sign spinning round Lovers they walk by, Like a cross over the lost and found holding hands two by two The fluorescent lights A breeze crosses the porch, flick over Pop’s Grill bicycle spokes spin ’round Shaniqua brings the coffee and asks “Fill?” and My jacket’s on, I’m out the door says “Penny for your thoughts now my boy, Bill” And tonight I’m gonna She went away, burn this town down she cut me like a knife The girls in their summer clothes Hello beautiful thing, In the cool of the evening light maybe you could save my life The girls in their summer of those glasses you dust off At your feet, my temple of bones And I’ll watch the bones in your back Here in this perdition we go on and on Like the Stations of the Cross Now our city of peace has crumbled ’Round your hair the sun lifts a halo Our book of faith’s been tossed At your lips a crown of thorns And I’m just out here searchin’ Whatever other deals gone down For my own piece of the cross To this one I’m sworn The late afternoon sun fills the room I’ll work for your love, dear With the mist of the I’ll work for your love garden before the fall What others may want for free I Ghent University Faculty of Arts and Philosophy Meet me in the Land of Hope and Dreams Influences of the protest song tradition on the recent work of Bruce Springsteen (1995-2012) Supervisor: Paper submitted in partial Dr. Debora Van Durme fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of “Master in de Taal- en Letterkunde: Nederlands- Engels” by Michiel Vaernewyck May 2014 Word of thanks The completion of this master dissertation would not have been possible without the help of several people that have accompanied me on this road. First of all, thank you to my loving parents for their support throughout the years. While my father encouraged me to listen to an obscure, dusty vinyl record called The River, he as well as my mother taught me the love for literature and music. Thanks for encouraging me to express myself through writing and my own music, which is a gift that money just cannot buy. Secondly, thanks to my great friends of the past few years at Ghent University, although they frequently – but not unfairly – questioned my profound passion for Bruce Springsteen. Also, thank you to my supervisor dr. Debora Van Durme who provided detailed and useful feedback to this dissertation and who had the faith to endorse this thesis topic. I hope faith will be rewarded. Last but not least, I want to thank everyone who proofread sections of this paper and I hope that they will also be inspired by what words and music can do. As always, much love to Helena, number one Croatian Bruce fan. Thanks to Phantom Dan and the Big Man, for inspiring me over and over again.

  • A Long Walk Home: the Role of Class and the Military in the Springsteen Catalogue Michael S
A Long Walk Home: The Role of Class and the Military in the Springsteen Catalogue Michael S. Neiberg United States Army War College and Robert M. Citino National World War II Museum1 Abstract This article analyzes the themes of class and military service in the Springsteen canon. As a member of the baby boom generation who narrowly missed service in Vietnam, Springsteen’s reflection on these heretofore unappreciated themes should not be surprising. Springsteen’s emergence as a musician and American icon coincide with the end of conscription and the introduction of the All-Volunteer Force in 1973. He became an international superstar as Americans were debating the meaning of the post-Vietnam era and the patriotic resurgence of the Reagan era. Because of this context, Springsteen himself became involved in veterans issues and was a voice of protest against the 2003 Iraq War. In a well-known monologue from his Live 1975-85 box set (1986), Bruce Springsteen recalls arguing with his father Douglas about the younger Springsteen’s plans for his future. Whenever Bruce provided inadequate explanations for his life goals, Douglas responded that he could not wait for the Army to “make a man” out of his long-haired, seemingly aimless son. Springsteen 1 Copyright © Michael S. Neiberg and Robert M. Citino, 2016. Michael Neiberg would like to thank Derek Varble, with whom he saw Springsteen in concert in Denver in 2005, for his helpful comments on a draft of this article. Address correspondence to [email protected] or [email protected]. BOSS: The Biannual Online-Journal of Springsteen Studies 2.1 (2016) http://boss.mcgill.ca/ 42 NEIBERG AND CITINO describes his fear as he departed for an Army induction physical in 1968, at the height of domestic discord over the Vietnam War.

Advisor _____________________________ Examining Committee: Jeanne Simonelli, Ph.D. Chair _____________________________ LeRhonda S. Manigault, Ph.D _____________________________ ii Acknowledgements First and foremost, my thanks go out to Drs. Neal and Simonelli for encouraging me to follow my passion and my heart. Dr. Neal helped me realize a framework within which I could explore my interests, and Dr. Simonelli kept my spirits alive so I could nurse the project along. My concert-going partner in crime, cruisin’tobruce, also deserves my gratitude, sharing expenses and experiences with me all over the eastern seaboard as well as some mid-America excursions. She tolerated me well, right up until the last time I forgot the tickets. I also must recognize the persistent assistance I received from my pal and companion Zero, my Maine Coon cat, who spent hours hanging over my keyboard as I typed. I attribute all typos and errors to his help, and thank him for the opportunity to lay the blame at his paws. And lastly, my thanks and gratitude goes out to Mr. Bruce Frederick Springsteen, a man of heart and of conscience who constantly keeps me honest and aware that “it ain’t no sin to be glad you’re alive (Badlands).”

  • Bruce Springsteen. Further up the Road
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN. FURTHER UP THE ROAD Photographs by FRANK STEFANKO Introduction by Bruce Springsteen Text by Frank Stefanko Forewords by Danny Clinch, Eric Meola The Signed Limited Edition Book Published November 2017 by Wall of Sound Editions "Frank’s photographs were stark. His talent was he managed to strip away your celebrity, your artifice, and get to the raw you. His photos had a purity and a street poetry to them. They were lovely and true, but they weren’t slick. Frank looked for your true grit and he naturally intuited the conflicts I was coming to terms with. His pictures captured the people I was writing about in my songs and showed me the part of me that was still one of them. We had other cover options but they didn’t have the hungriness of Frank’s pictures.” – Bruce Springsteen (Reprinted by permission from "Born To Run", Simon & Schuster, 2016) Wall of Sound Editions will publish a phenomenal new limited edition book of photographs of Bruce Springsteen made by Frank Stefanko. BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN. FURTHER UP THE ROAD will be published in November 2017 and is an astounding anthology of over 40 years of largely unseen images of Springsteen, all shot by Stefanko throughout Springsteen’s epic career. Frank Stefanko has spent over four decades working closely with Bruce Springsteen. He shot the iconic covers for Darkness on the Edge of Town and The River albums as well as the cover shot for Springsteen's best-selling Born To Run autobiography and accompanying album Chapter And Verse. The new hardback collectors edition features a personal introduction text by Bruce Springsteen himself and is packed full of unseen photos and features, with image captions and text by Stefanko and forewords by fellow Springsteen photographers Eric Meola, who shot the Born To Run and The Promise album covers, and Danny Clinch, who shot the Devils & Dust, The Rising, The Seeger Sessions, and Working on a Dream album covers.

  • Elvisbrucefeaturefromstonepo
How an encounter that never happened might have helped to change history if it had By Shawn Poole Ever since he was a child, Bruce Springsteen has been strongly influenced by the artistry of Elvis Presley. Over the years, the “E Street”/”Elvis” connection has remained strong. Most recently, Springsteen participated along with E Street Band members Nils Lofgren and Patti Scialfa in the Elvis: Viva Las Vegas television special (now on DVD in the U.S., where it hit #1 on the Billboard DVD sales chart), and its accompanying soundtrack album. E Streeters Garry Tallent and Max Weinberg also were on hand at this year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony to induct Elvis’ original drummer and bassist, D.J. Fontana and the late Bill Black. Presley was only forty-two years old when his life tragically ended. “They found him slumped up against the drain,” Bruce Springsteen would later sing of his fallen idol, “with a whole lot of trouble running through his veins; Bye-bye, Johnny; Johnny, bye-bye; You didn’t have to die; you didn’t have to die.” While Elvis’ premature decline and death did absolutely nothing to stop his immense cultural influence, it did rob the world of many more years of music from this great artist. It also ensured that Bruce Springsteen would never get another chance to meet the man who initially inspired his own musical career. (He had two chances: one famous unofficial chance when he jumped the wall at Graceland in 1976 and one not-as-famous in 1977 when local concert promoters offered Springsteen an official chance to meet Elvis backstage before his final Philadelphia concert.) But what if Bruce had gotten to meet Elvis before August 16, 1977? Might things have turned out any differently for either or both of them, as well as the many other lives they affected? In this work of speculative fiction, Shawn Poole ponders the possibilities, poignantly reminding us of the promise and potential that tragically disappeared in that long ago summer.

  • August 4, 2019 TEXT: Hosea 11:1–11 TITLE: the (Not So) Long Walk Home by the Rev
August 4, 2019 TEXT: Hosea 11:1–11 TITLE: The (Not So) Long Walk Home By the Rev. Dr. Randy Bush Hosea 11:1—―When Israel was young, oh, how I loved them.‖ This is such a familiar story. It’s a parent doting over a child. Think for a moment about someone who doted on you—who slipped you cookies even if it might spoil your supper, whose embrace was always there for you. Think about those you dote upon—the young people in your life who make you smile, for whom you’d do just about anything. It’s such a familiar story. Now, before this turns into a Hallmark made-for-TV movie, let’s remember that those angels we dote upon can also be little devils—giving us heartburn, heartaches, and gray hair. You tell them, ―Just wait right here,‖ and before the words are out of your mouth, they are bolting for freedom. Once, when both our kids were young, we were in an airport trying to corral the kids before entering the security checkpoint lines. I was holding a suitcase when Ian suddenly took off and I had to abandon the suitcase to go catch him. Let’s just say that by the time I returned, I had to identify my bag from the security guards, put up with a drug-sniffing dog inspection, and suddenly had extra questions asked of me by gate agents for every leg of our flight on that trip. It’s a familiar story. God loves us; we take that love for granted or worse we run in the opposite direction.
