exploring wine with tim fish Making Wine Not Child’s Play for ‘Toy Story’ Creator John and Nancy Lasseter are making serious wine in Sonoma Valley Posted: Mar 21, 2012 11:00am ET You may not recognize John Lasseter, or even know his name, but he’s in- volved in your life, or at least your children’s or grandchildren’s. He is the mind behind the three Toy Story movies, Cars, Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo, Up! and the soon-to-be-released Brave. Time magazine named Lasseter one of the 100 most influential people in the world last year. He is the undisputed master of animation and the chief creative Pixar’s John Lasseter is off to a good start officer behind Walt Disney Studios and Pixar Animation. With his wife, Nancy, he is also producing some outstanding wines from their ranch in Sonoma Valley. emulating his film success in the vineyard. As someone who grew up watching Disney and Looney Tunes, it was a treat to chat wine and animation with the Lasseters for my profile published in the April 30 issue of Wine Spectator. We even share the same favorite cartoon: “Rabbit Seasoning,” the Bugs Bunny-Daffy Duck classic with the punch line “pronoun trouble.” Wine isn’t a hobby for the Lasseters. They have 28 acres of organically farmed vineyards, a handsome new winery that current- ly produces 1,200 cases a year, plus a veteran winemaker in Julia Iantosca. The wines are all blends rather than straight varietals, and stylistically they aim for grace rather than power.

What to Drink Now: Incredible Reds BY HAYLEY HAMILTON COGILL | OCT 10, 2011 AT 9:04 AM | POSTED IN WINE & SPIRITS One of the joys of wine is that we live in a world where Old World processes and traditions, dating back hundreds of years, are still in use. At the same time, New World technology and imagination are taking place in the vineyard and ending with the sales department. The results of both, readily available, are incredible bottles of wine. Here are a few standouts I have enjoyed recently; some selections were sent for editorial consideration. Herrera 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon Seleccion Rebecca from Mi Sueno winery in Napa Valley. Owned by Rolando Herrera, former winemaker for such places as Vine Cliff and Paul Hobbs, is making incredible wine in a warehouse space lined with framed, signed baseball jersey’s from some of the best in the game. Mi Sueno (My Dream in Spanish) was launched in 1997 as a side project while Herrera was Assistant Winemaker at Chateau Potelle with a goal to create exceptional wine in Napa Valley. Today his dream is a reality, with approximately 6500 cases made annually, this former Mexican immigrant who moved to the United States at age 15 and started as a dishwasher now produces award winning wine from some of the best fruit sourced throughout Napa and Sonoma, and is a constant at White House dinners, most recently on May 19, 2010 where the Herrera Seleccion Rebecca was poured.

Over three decades later, he launched his eponymous Sonoma winery in 2006. • Lasseter Family Is Drawn to Sonoma Winery MARCH 5, 2012 | 04:00AM PT Pixar Couple’S Wines Reflect Love of French Culture
Lasseter family is drawn to Sonoma winery MARCH 5, 2012 | 04:00AM PT Pixar couple’s wines reflect love of French culture Pat Saperstein Deputy Editor @Variety_PatS Pixar founder John Lasseter is fond of saying that winemaking is Nancy Lasseter’s movie. He also likes to joke that he does his day job to fund his wife’s day job. But it’s clear that Lasseter Family Winery is close to both of their hearts. The Lasseters started making wine years ago — using Tommy Smothers’ neighboring winery at first — and by 2002 had purchased 95 acres in Glen Ellen, a prime Sonoma County wine region. The winery stayed largely under the radar until last November, when the Lasseters opened a tasting room to the public by appointment. Nancy Lasseter started her career at Apple, but now her focus is on grapes, working on the branding and marketing for the winery. Both Nancy and John work closely with winemaker Julia Iantosca to select the right mix of grapes for each of their four wines, which are all French-style blends with monikers that reflect the couple’s love of Gallic culture. “We bounce ideas off each other, and he gives input on the design of the labels,” said Nancy Lasseter. While they were thrilled when “Up” was selected to open the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, Nancy was almost as excited to have an excuse to visit Bandol, the region that produces the crisp roses with which Cannes festgoers often fall in love. They brought back 29 bottles from France and sampled them all to find just the right blend for their own dry, light Enjoue rose.
