Official name: Bentley Motors Ltd. Formerly owned by: Rolls-Royce Motors Ltd. Owned by: Volkswagen Audi Group. Current situation: Originally an impeccably- British luxury marque, Bentley is now simply one of Volkswagen’s luxury brands. Bentleys are re-bodied Volkswagens with Bentley badges glued on. Rich and ignorant customers have ensured brisk sales for the new models. However, economic stormclouds threaten luxury car sales, and Bentley is no exception. Chances of survival: Okay. If things get tough for Volkswagen, it is likely that Bentley will quietly cease Bentley production and wait for better times • A brief history of Bentley ALTER OWEN WBENTLEY, known to all as ‘W.O.’, was a pioneer of British luxury performance mo- toring. Bentley’s first job was at the Great Northern Rail- way Locomotive Works in Doncaster, northern England. However, bikes & motorbikes were Bentley’s passion. Off duty, Bentley and his brother raced at the Isle of Man TT event and at the Brook- lands race track, near London. Bentley’s passion then shifted to cars. In 1912 Bentley’s family helped W.O. buy a small com- pany importing French DFP sports models. 2 All content © dogandlemon.com 2016 During a visit to the DFP factory in 1913, W.O. noticed a lightweight aluminium paper- weight – and had the inspired idea of using alu- minium instead of cast iron to make engine pis- tons. The first such Bentley pistons went into service in aeroplane engines during World War I. Be- cause Bentley’s pistons were lighter, the engines they were fitted to used less fuel and put out more power. -

Bugatti, Ferrari and Dunhill Bentley Lead Christie's
For Immediate Release 10 March 2005 Contact: Matthew Paton 020 7389 2965 [email protected] BUGATTI, FERRARI AND DUNHILL BENTLEY LEAD CHRISTIE’S APRIL SALE Exceptional Motor Cars and Automobilia Tuesday, 19 April 2005 London – Christie’s International Motor Cars is pleased to announce the first London sale of 2005, which will take place on 19 April. This sale will include 22 cars from various ages of motoring, and will have examples from Ferrari, Bentley, Bugatti, Rolls-Royce and Jaguar, among others. Highlighting the sale are examples from four different eras of motoring: 1897 Panhard-Levassor 6hp Twin Cylinder Phaeton The Panhard-Levassor was the first ever luxury car, and the company dominated the luxury market until the arrival of Mercedes in 1901. In 1895, a Panhard-Levassor won the first ever motor race by driving from Paris to Bordeaux and back again. Unfortunately, few examples have survived – the Veteran Car Club of Great Britain records just 35. As a result, it is a rare occurrence to see such an example of motoring history at auction. This example, which is known as ‘William the Conqueror’, was delivered to a motor dealership in Paris in December 1897. It was discovered in the late 1970s in northern France, and was brought to the UK where it underwent a comprehensive restoration. The car carries an estimate of £100,000-150,000. 1923 Bentley 3 Litre Drophead Coupé by Park Ward This immaculate vintage Bentley was delivered new to Alfred Dunhill in December 1923. Dunhill is most famous for founding the company which carries his name, and which aimed to supply ‘everything but the motor’ in its motor accessories range. -

Bentley: a Century of Class ‘To Build a Fast Car, a Good Car, the Best in Its Class.’ Written by David M
Highline Autos Highline Autos GreatGarages Bentley: A Century of Class ‘To build a fast car, a good car, the best in its class.’ written by David M. Brown –W. O. Bentley Bentley Motors is 100 in 2019: Auto lovers worldwide are celebrating a century of the marque’s elegant, powerful motorcars. Company founder, engineer, entrepreneur, Walter Owen ‘W.O.’ Bentley (1888–1971) apprenticed at the Great Northern Railway Locomotive Works in Doncaster, northern England, when he was 16 and still riding a bicycle. In his first job with the National Motor Cab Company, he supervised the service and overhaul of 400 taxis. All the while, he and two brothers successfully raced motorcycles. In 1912 he and one brother, H.M., bought a small dealership importing the French car, Doriot, Flandrin & Parant (DFP), of Courbevoie, France. During World War I, he designed the Bentley Rotary 1 and 2 fighter aircraft engines, which influenced his later car designs. In January 1919, the brothers opened Bentley Motorcars Ltd., with H.M.J. Ward as the third director. That October, the first Bentley was completed in a workshop near famed Baker Street. Until the war stopped his racing and car-building, W.O. Bentley successfully raced his DFP cars fitted with these high-performance engines against vehicles with more formidable powertrains. Following the extraordinary decade of the 1920s, with five Le Mans wins, the struggling Bentley Motors Ltd. failed and was purchased by Rolls Royce to prevent rival Napier from acquiring it. Although owned for 67 years by a luxury car builder without a racing commitment, Bentley maintained its name and reputation as a quality motorcar. -

In 2003 Bentley returned to Le Mans took a historic 1st and 2nd nearly 73 years to the day that the two Speed Sixes performed the same in 1930. T. + 44 (0)1285 831 488 E.
