Water and Society V 305 WASTE MANAGEMENT STUDY IN THE LAKE BUHI PERIPHERY, BUHI, CAMARINES SUR, PHILIPPINES JENNIFER M. EBOÑA Central Bicol State University of Agriculture, Philippines ABSTRACT Piggery and solid wastes monitoring was undertaken along ten (10) lakeside areas namely : Sta. Elena, Sta. Clara, San Buena, Tambo, Cabatuan, Ibayugan, Salvacion, Iraya, Ipil and Sta. Cruz of Lake Buhi in Buhi, Camarines Sur, Philippines. Key findings include: (1) a total of 331 pigpens (with an average of two heads per pigsty) proliferate the lakeshore; (2) piggery wastes are intentionally washed directly into the lake through flushing; (3) estimated volume of wastes produced is 2,019 L/day with corresponding organic loading of 0.05 mg/L which is far below the tolerable limits of 5 mg/L for class C water or lakewater; and (4) presence of municipal ordinance No. 03040 provides a framework for regulating piggery and other wastes. The findings suggest that wastes from piggery alone cannot be generalized as culprit for water pollution. This is validated by water quality monitoring quarterly report of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) which reflects that water conforms to the standard set in terms of Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) and other significant parameters. While it is true that nature has a self-purification process, however, if not given due attention, piggery wastes may have significant cumulative impact on the lake. However, to ensure the health of the lake and conserve the environment, the following is suggested: -

Aquarius philippinensis sp.n. belongs to the A. paludum species group (sensu ANDERSEN 1990) and is probably part of a phylogenetic clade con- taining A. adelaidis (DOHRN, 1860) and A. Introduction Water striders of the genera Gerris FABRICIUS, 1794, Limnoporus STÂL, 1868, and Aquarius SCHELLENBERG, 1800 are important organisms for studies of biogeography, evolutionary trends and ecological adaptations, and certainly the best-studied Gerro- morpha regarding these aspects. -

In 1996, 35.4% of the total fish production or 980,857 mt came from the aquaculture sector. Although milkfish from brackishwater ponds comprise the bulk of the produce, tilapia production from freshwater aquaculture in lakes, ponds and reservoirs is increasing annually. Fish cages and fish pens proliferate in most inland waters. The operation of such structures as livelihood for the coastal inhabitants has been recognized as a profitable venture. Many have gone into tilapia culture in ponds and small experimental cages in lakes and reservoirs in the 1980's. The success of tilapia culture in cages in the Bicol Region and Magat Dam in Isabela triggered the interest of other enterprising businessmen to expand the practice to other inland waters. However, problems of mass fish kill caused by deteriorating water quality have been reported. There is a need to strictly regulate the aquaculture practices; otherwise, more problems in the aquatic environment will be encountered. -
The Status of Philippine Lake Studies: Scholarly Deficit in Social Science and Small-Lake Research
Asia-Pacific Social Science Review 15 (1) 2015, pp. 78-101 The Status of Philippine Lake Studies: Scholarly Deficit in Social Science and Small-Lake Research Bing Baltazar C. Brillo University of the Philippines Los Baños, Philippines [email protected] This study surveys the literature on Philippine lake studies using a representative sample from the library databases of the three leading universities in the country. The paper proceeds as follows: firstly, it categorizes the existing lake studies by scholarly orientation (natural science perspective or social science perspective) and by physical size of the particular lake under study (big lake or small lake); secondly, it charts and assesses the overall trajectory of lake studies in the country. The paper concludes that Philippine lake studies are dominated by the natural science-based studies and heavily concentrated on big-lake research. This finding illustrates the gaps in the literature, specifically: one, the need to account for all the existing lakes in the country; two, the need for more social science-based studies on lakes; and three, the need for more outputs on small-lake research. The paper closes with the call to balance scholarly deficit as the way towards meaningful progress in lake studies in the country. Farmed Tilapia Production in the Philippines Is Declining: What Has Happened and What Can Be Done

Guerrero III* National Academy of Science and Technology Philippines Philippine Heritage Center, DOST Compound, Taguig City Metro Manila, Philippines Tilapia is the second most important farmed fish in the Philippines produced in ponds, cages, and pens. While from 2001 to 2011 there was an increase in the production of farmed tilapia by 240%, the production increase was only 7% from 2007 to 2016. An assessment of the farmed tilapia production for 2007–2016 was done using data of the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) for total annual production and annual production according to the culture system. Results showed that the average annual production rate (AAPR) was only 0.7% for the period, 4.8% for brackishwater ponds, 1.5% for freshwater pens, 1.3% for freshwater cages, and 1.1% for freshwater ponds. Brackishwater ponds throughout the country, freshwater ponds in Mindanao, and marine coastal water cages are seen to have a high potential for growth. From focus group discussions and key informant interviews with 55 tilapia farmers in Luzon and Mindanao, the major causes for the low production of farmed tilapia identified were “High Water Temperature” (68%), “Lack of Government Assistance” (58%), “Poor Breed of Tilapia” (48%), “High Cost of Production” (46%), and “Lack of Capital” (44%). Measures are recommended for addressing the major causes of low production. This paper reports the first record of A. dorsalis in Lake Lanao, an ancient lake located in the island of Mindanao. Based on its very high abundance, and positive correlation between the total body length of females with lake dissolved nitrates, phosphates and chlorophyll a concentration, A. dorsalis has clearly established itself in the lake ecosystem and has benefitted in the steady increase in the lake’s nutrient load. Lake Lanao’s endemic Tropodiaptomus gigantoviger may be considered as another calanoid species to be displaced by A. dorsalis given that a thorough examination of plankton samples collected from Lake Lanao have not yielded individuals of T. gigantoviger.
