6.18 Kauri/Karaka Street Reserve Description Location: Kauri/Karaka St Legal description: Lot 1 DP 12544 Size: 1.66 ha Reserve status: Reserve Karaka Street Riversdale Drive Skeet Place Te Ngaere Place Kauri Street Physical description This reserve is an undulating piece of land surrounded by residential houses in the Merrilands area. It forms connections between several local roads and cul de sacs including Kauri St, Karaka St, Skeet Place and Te Ngaere Place. Within the reserve is a significant native bush remnant, which is known to contain a rare plant -Peperomia urvilleana (a small epiphyte). Tangata whenua interests This reserve is within the tribal rohe of Te Atiawa Iwi and Nga Mahanga a Tairi. The area is of historic and cultural significance to Ngati Te Whiti and Te Kotahitanga o Nga Mahanga a Tairi. Land status and history This land was previously held by the crown for state housing purposes. In 1979 it was set apart by the Assistant Commissioner of Crown lands as reserve for recreation purposes and vested in the New Plymouth City Council. Between 1990 and 1995 Merrilands School adopted the bush remnant (known to them as Skeet Bush). Children from the school worked in the reserve to enhance the bush Parks Neighbourhood Reserves Management Plan New Plymouth District Council June 2009 remnant including extensive weed clearance and Arbor Day plantings in 1991, 1992, 1993 and 1994. Existing improvements This reserve is largely undeveloped. Post and rail fencing exits on the road frontages of Kauri and Karaka Streets. Walking tracks also exist through the native bush renamant, which were created by Merrilands School. Uses and activities This reserve is suitable for passive recreation and child’s play on the flat open areas. Classification Recreation Management objectives and specific policies Future development of this reserve will focus on further developing a pathway, which links all connecting streets, as well as formalising a path through the bush remnant. Vegetation will be maintained and enhanced to ensure ecological and amenity values are preserved.
