University Microfilms 300 North Zeeb Road Ann Arbor, Michigan 4B106 a Xerox Education Company S-1 | 72-21,028 INFORMATION TO USERS This dissertation was produced from a microfilm copy of the original document. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1. The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page{s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again — beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation. Silver prints of "photographs" may be ordered at additional charge by writing the Order Department, giving the catalog number, title, author and specific pages you wish reproduced. • The Effects of Thermal and Correlated Noise on Magnons in a Quantum
The effects of thermal and correlated noise on magnons in a quantum ferromagnet Jan Jeske1;2, Angel´ Rivas3;4, Muhammad H. Ahmed1, Miguel A. Martin-Delgado3;4, Jared H. The dynamics and thermal equilibrium of spin waves (magnons) in a quantum ferromagnet as well as the macroscopic magnetisation are investigated. Thermal noise due to an interaction with lattice phonons and the effects of spatial correlations in the noise are considered. We first present a Markovian master equation approach with analytical solutions for any homogeneous spatial correlation function of the noise. We find that spatially correlated noise increases the decay rate of magnons with low wave vectors to their thermal equilibrium, which also leads to a faster decay of the ferromagnet's magnetisation to its steady-state value. For long correlation lengths and higher temperature we find that additionally there is a component of the magnetisation which decays very slowly, due to a reduced decay rate of fast magnons. This effect could be useful for fast and noise-protected quantum or classical information transfer and magnonics. We further compare ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic behaviour in noisy environments and find qualitatively similar behaviour in Ohmic but fundamentally different behaviour in super-Ohmic environments.

  • Earthquakes Clustering Based on Maximum Likelihood Estimation of Point Process Conditional Intensity Function
Earthquakes clustering based on maximum likelihood estimation of point process conditional intensity function Giada Adelfio and Marcello Chiodi Dipartimento di Scienze Statistiche e Matematiche “Silvio Vianelli” (DSSM), University of Palermo, Italy Abstract In this paper we propose a clustering technique to separate and find out the two main component of seismicity: the background seismicity and the triggered one. The method here proposed assigns each earthquakes to the cluster of earthquakes or to the set of isolated event according to the intensity function. This function is estimated by maximum likelihood methods following the theory of point process and iteratively changing the assignment of the events. This technique develops non- parametric estimation methods and computational procedure for the maximization of the point process likelihood function. 1 Introduction Because of the different seismogenic features controlling the kind of seismic release of clustered and background seismicity (Adelfio et al. (2005)), to describe the seismicity of an area in space, time and magnitude domains, it could be useful to study the features of independent events and strongly correlated ones, separately. The two different kinds of events give different information on the seismicity of an area. For the short-term (or real-term) prediction of seismicity and to estimate param- eters of phenomenological laws we need a good definition of the earthquake clusters. Furthermore the prediction of the occurrence of large earthquakes (related to the as- sessment of seismic risk in space and time) is complicated by the presence of clusters of aftershocks, that are superimposed to the background seismicity and shade its principal characteristics. For this purposes the preliminary subdivision of a seismic catalog in background seismicity and clustered events is required.
