UConn Baseball | Five-Time CWS Participant | 19 NCAA Tournament Appearances | 21 Conference Titles News and Notes All-American Start... Tim Cate had a freshman year to re- member. Cate earned Louisville Slugger Freshman All-Amer- ican honors after going 5-1 with a 2.73 ERA and recording 101 strikeouts in 82.1 innings last season. His body of work also earned him Rookie Pitcher of the Year in The American. After the season ended, Cate went off and pitched for the USA Collegiate National Team.

Preseason All-Conference... Two Huskies were recognized by the conference prior to the season. Both Willy Yahn and Tim Cate were named to the Preseason All-Conference First Team. Cate also shared Co-Preseason Pitcher of the Year honors with East Carolina’s Evan Kruczynski.

2017 Schedule Highlights... UConn is gearing up for a 56- game regular season slate that includes 24 American Athletic Conference tilts and 22 home contests at J.O. Christian Field in Storrs. Additionally, the squad will play 14 games against seven teams that qualified for the 2016 NCAA Tournament.

Connecticut Under Penders... In the 14th season of com- petition under the watch of head coach Jim Penders, UConn owns a 458-321-4 record, advancing to four NCAA Tourna- ments and winning the 2013 Big East Tournament crown and 2016 American Athletic Conference Tournament. Since 2004, the Huskies have boasted eight All-Americans.

MLB Pipeline... Connecticut established a new program- record with five former Huskies in at one time during the 2015 season. The Huskies finished the 2016 season with four MLB players and three former players knocking on the door in AAA.

MLB Draft Picks… Since the draft’s inception in 1965, 88 Connecticut players have been selected by major league teams. Under Jim Penders, 39 Huskies have been drafted or signed by MLB clubs, including four (Anthony Kay, Patrick Ruotolo, Jack Sundberg and Bobby Melley) a season ago. Including 15 players in the MLB or minor league system.

Worldly Huskies... A pair of former UConn players, John Andreoli (’11) and Greg Nappo (’11), have been selected to compete on the international stage in World Baseball Classic beginning on March 6. Andreoli will represent Italy (March 9th vs. Mexico) while Nappo will pitch for Colombia (March 10 vs. USA).

The American Hangs Tough... Three American Athletic Conference teams (East Carolina, UConn & Tulane) earned berths into the NCAA Tournament a season ago, including the Pirates, who advanced to the Super Regionals. For the second-straight season the conference finished in the top six of conference RPI (Warren Nolan).

Jim Penders has worked with the University of Connecticut baseball program in 25 of the last Tournament history to reach the final game. In addition, Penders guided the Huskies to their 27 years, being associated with the Huskies as a student-athlete, an assistant coach and now third straight season with 34 or more wins, as his 2006 and 2007 squads ended the year with head coach. He completed his 13th season at the helm of the program in 2016.
