If an elevator is added to historic buildings, please keep aesthetics impact to a minimum. 3 Incorporate Native American history/heritage/contributions (Salish; they were the original farmers); Incorporate historic values in new construction; maintain existing historic values; consider keeping the maintenance building and incorporating it into the learning center. 4 Keep + maximize + emphasize historic architecture BUT use new materials that are sustainable and mimic historic elements (windows, siding, and cupola); like an oasis; feeling of honoring the past; feeling of openness, fresh air, breathing. 5 Commercial building should be the tallest; maintain character of historic buildings including the maintenance building; roof shapes important, window Public Involvement Summary 76 Page 2 of 10 July 17, 2017 patterns, colors, details; Building placement pedestrian friendly, set back from motorized traffic lanes; Original color schemes TBD/reiterate for unified overall character; roofs hipped or galled to minimize visual impact & allow views of mountains; can maintenance building be saved? Maintenance building may be demolished—reuse style of ridge caps at maintenance building; make sure commercial building is the tallest. General character of new: mimic historic buildings: roof shapes – adopt commercial building and maintenance building; texture/shape of siding; maintenance issues; colors – green of commercial roof vs. culinary roof; window patterns; volume shape – extended bays; scale – keep roof shapes from being too tall; clerestory windows; character of maintenance building – take into consideration; interpretive signs?; return to more craftsmen details – corner boards in proportion; cupola or clerestories or light monitors; placement of buildings; entrance gates – prominent, reflect historic character – design competition?; original internment camp building (Building 18) – moving to the Fort. Master plan for landscaping? --Paige Goode 6 All buildings (maybe not maintenance) should be four sided design; like the brackets, divided windows (knee bracing); pedestrian scale facing pedestrian like the use of extended bays as ways to break scale down; efforts to restorations back to similar siding, rafter tails, wood or wood equivalent; clerestory and cupolas help to break up mass; great repetitive pattern; hopefully building 18 can be moved to the Fort. 7 For historic buildings: bring back wood drop lap cladding; restore historic wood windows; bring back green-stain wood not shingles Elements to be incorporated in a distinctive way (not imitate): barn doors; exposed rafters and craftsman; clerestories with windows (knee bracing); extended entrance bays; heavy timbers; drop lap wood siding; arched fixed wood frame windows; 3x2 wood frame windows (rows of 3); jerkin heads, nipped roof cupolas; restore roofs to original sown green – stained shingles; W:\Projects\111202\111202.6 Design Guidelines\Docs\DESIGN GUIDELINES\Workshop #2\Comments\Meeting Summary - Workshop #1.docx 77 Page 3 of 10 July 17, 2017 historic light fixtures; consider historic maintenance building; large/industrial hardware – barn shingles; four sided front; tapered floors (commercial, culinary, maintenance); flag post on top of cupola historically. Learning Center: 1 Craftsman style; alternate color scheme for historic; natural or natural appearing materials; integration to garden and mountain views. 2 Good placement, near parking for groups and schools. 3 [incorporate the maintenance building into the Learning Center Design – see notes on historic buildings for details]. 4 See above – follow established design of historic buildings (like the commercial building) but imitating with eye to future for lighting and access and purpose. [arrow to green Fairgrounds logo]. Logo really says it all for design to carry through design. 5 Set back from entrance road. 6 Programmatically break the uses into separate buildings and keep the existing contributing maintenance building if possible; create a small boulevard in front of the new building (place to provide shade). Livestock Center: 1 Craftsman/water; not historic green with white color scheme; clerestory or other
