Shakespeare's Othello is one of his finest and most famous tragedies. This recording features music written specifically for the Macbeth 3 CD Set: Performed by Stephen Dillane & Cast production which enjoyed huge success - each performance was a sell-out. The wronged duke raises a tempest to shipwreck his old opponents on his island so that he can ensure justice is done. This play differs from its predecessors, being amore structured piece, examining the development and motivations of a single character, Richard Duke of Gloucester, who will stop at nothing to gain control of the throne occupied by his brother Edward IV. This is the disturbing tale of the dual personality of Dr. Jekyll, a physician. A generous and philanthropic man, he is preoccupied with the problems of good and evil and with the possibility of separating them into distinct personalities. He develops a drug that transforms him into the demonic Mr. Hyde, in whose person he exhausts all the latent evil in his nature. Here is the full-cast production of Shakespeare's classic love story, fully dramatized from the complete text, and starring Michael Sheen as Romeo and Kate Beckinsale as Juliet. David Tennant stars as Malvolio in Shakespeare's comedy of disguise, madness and love. One of Shakespeare's happiest plays, Twelfth Night is both a comedy of misrule and a trenchant attack on puritanism. Disguise and deceit leads to misadventure, madness and mistaken love. Orsino loves Olivia, but she loves Cesario, who really does love Orsino for Cesario is actually Viola. Each of those plays gives us an eponymous hero who is in some significant way flawed, but for whom we also inevitably feel deep sympathy, whatever his errors or crimes. But in MacBeth, Shakespeare has chosen for his tragic hero a man guilty of the most terrible crime imaginable to a Jacobean audience, that of regicide - the murder of a Macbeth 3 CD Set: Performed by Stephen Dillane & Cast. Part of the writer's triumph is to succeed in making Macbeth, whose crime we must detest, a man in whom we must also see something of our own darker side, our own potential for evil, so that Malcolm's final judgment on him as a mere "butcher" seems wholly inadequate, the verdict of someone who does not share the audience's insight into Macbeth's anguished inner world. Now sit back and enjoy this lively performance, featuring the voices of award-winning actors Stephen Dillane Macbeth and Fiona Shaw Lady Macbethaccompanied by a full cast. Most Naxos recordings of Shakespeare are high quality. This Macbeth is a rare and unfortunate exception. My issues with the performance are down to personal taste; issues with the recording should be of universal concern. If this title becomes available in the enhanced format, it will probably dispel the concerns many Macbeth 3 CD Set: Performed by Stephen Dillane & Cast expressed about the sound quality. I've listened to this on the original CDs and as an Audible format 4 download, and the difference in clarity is an eye-opener. The third witch, as several people have commented, is inaudible in the download; it has something to do with the conversion of a complex stereo design to mono. In stereo, all witches are clearly audible and the background noises and music are clearly separated from the voices. It's a particular shame with this title, because Fiona Shaw's vision of Macbeth she directed it, as well as playing Lady Macbeth is haunting, almost hallucinatory. It is by far one of the most ambitious and brilliantly-realized audiobooks of a Shakespeare play available. If it does become available as an enhanced-format download, I would urge anyone who tried it before, and rejected it, to give it another try. A most worthwhile rendition of Macbeth. The voices are expressive and clear, without milking the emotions. The narrative flows well. The technical quality is good, with the very occasional exception of some bit players, where the Macbeth 3 CD Set: Performed by Stephen Dillane & Cast are muted, for example that of the third witch. All in all, a rollicking tale of gore and guts to gladden the hearts of Quentin Taratino fans. The dynamics of the sound in this recording are dismal. The performance of Lady MacBeth is superb! The performance of MacBeth himself is extremely uneven, to say it as politely as possible. Too many bells and whistles. The quality of ambience should not be Macbeth 3 CD Set: Performed by Stephen Dillane & Cast strained. The relentless thematic use of water noise - dripping, decanting, gurgling, splashing, washing, raining - threatened to drown the very strut and fret of this finest of plays. You can bearly hear one of the witches, and they don't sound like witches enough to suit me. The preference of the witches' dramatization may be nit-picky, but the complaint about not being able to hear one of them is serious. And that's kind of a problem for me, since they're one of my favorite parts of the story. I was looking forward to a good rendition of Macbeth to listen to in my car, but this one leaves you confused at best. Acts and scenes are not announced, so you don't really know what is going on; difficult to figure out which character is which - if you pile on the Shakespearean era English and occasional poor sonics, it makes for a dissatisfying experience. Save your money. Great audio dramatization of one of my favorite Shakespeare plays. Phenomenal cast, especially Stephen Dillane. This definitely helped my students. There was weird breathing through, but not a bad performance. Macbeth 3 CD Set: Performed by Stephen Dillane & Cast performers. The last bar staff leave the hulking building on the south bank of the River Thames in Central London at 3 a. The first goods trucks arrive at 6 a. All artistic directors are plate spinners, but being in charge of the National, which employs about 4, people, is particularly demanding. The job is all-consuming: His first meeting often Macbeth 3 CD Set: Performed by Stephen Dillane & Cast at a. Their demands can be loud, raucous, and difficult to reconcile—much like those of British voters. In British theater, just as in Britain overall, the past decade has been a time of austerity. But its state grant has been cut by 30 percent in real terms since Further reductions are expected under the newly reelected Conservative Party, which is traditionally skeptical of government funding for art, and is considering the abolition of the government department responsible for culture. The National has also been battered by questions about its priorities. Like the Brexit debate, this has a populist dimension. Should it be reaching out to audiences around the country, or drawing them toward its London home? Are minority and women artists getting enough opportunities? Is the Macbeth 3 CD Set: Performed by Stephen Dillane & Cast too white, too old, too rich? How can British theater—an industry filled with people who voted to remain in the European Union—make art that speaks to and represents the 52 percent who voted to leave? All this boils down to a single, fundamental question: Is the National Theatre primarily an artistic project, or a social one? The choice facing the National, then, is a stark one. Excellence is a proven formula. It sells. High-profile writers, top directors, and celebrity actors plus tried-and-tested classics equals bums on seats. There is a ready-made audience for a Shakespeare play with a well-known name, such as Simon Russell Beale or Ralph Fiennes, in the title role. Excellence is safer, too, because the National now has to generate serious box-office returns: Shrinking state investment means it must rely on transferring its plays to the commercial sector to balance the books. The Norris era, now in its fifth yearhas yet to produce a hit on that scale. Yet excellence is also exclusive; a cozy cabal of established names that risks keeping out anyone who does not fit the white, or male, or middle- class template for stardom.

William Shakespeare on Film, Video and Stage Titles in bold red font with an asterisk (*) represent the crème de la crème – first choice titles in each category. These are the titles you’ll probably want to explore first. Titles in bold black font are the second- tier – outstanding films that are the next level of artistry and craftsmanship. Once you have experienced the top tier, these are where you should go next. They may not represent the highest achievement in each genre, but they are definitely a cut above the rest. Finally, the titles which are in a regular black font constitute the rest of the films within the genre. I would be the first to admit that some of these may actually be worthy of being “ranked” more highly, but it is a ridiculously subjective matter.
