PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

  • Despacito”’S Crossovers
Petra R. Rivera-Rideau and Jericko Torres-Leschnik “The Colors and Flavors of My Puerto Rico”: Mapping “Despacito”’s Crossovers Journal of Popular Music, 31.1 (March 2019): 87-108. As relieved evacuees from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands disembarked the Royal Caribbean cruise ship, they waved Puerto Rican flags, shouted “Puerto Rico!” and “¡Puerto Rico se levanta!” (rise up, Puerto Rico!), and listened to salsa tunes and Luis Fonsi’s hit song, “Despacito”. After losing electricity and water in the wake of Hurricane Maria, over 3,800 evacuees from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands finally made it to the mainland. The majority of the arrivals were Puerto Rican residents who had never lived anywhere but the island, and some of the passengers were stranded tourists, grateful to return home. The ship, named the Adventure of the Seas, carried U.S., U.S. Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rican flags proudly on its balcony. “Despacito” and Marc Anthony salsa tunes played as evacuees were reunited with loved ones who eagerly awaited their arrival.1 Although salsa has long been associated with Puerto Ricanness, “Despacito” is a new symbol of Puerto Rican national identity.2 Fonsi’s hit thrust Puerto Rico into the limelight shortly before the hurricane. Just two days after Maria struck, Fonsi described how “the world is upside down.”3 As Fonsi performed his greatest hits, including “Despacito”, on his U.S. tour, he, crewmembers, and the audience struggled with being out of contact with family members on the island.4 One can’t help but see how “Despacito,” for better or for worse, has become a symbol of Puerto Rican identity.

  • Robin Hood Camper Newsletter
Fall 2016 Hello Robin Hood Campers! It’s hard to believe it’s been almost five weeks since the busses pulled out of camp and marked the end of summer 2016. This past summer was one for the books. We had amazing weather, a record number of Mt. Washington climbers, the most new and total campers, great leadership in the Saxons and Scribes, and of course the best staff ever. We were introduced to carpetball and a universal favorite, our new senior camp waterfront play area. Dan Nevins led us in yoga and inspired us for our all camp letter writing to soldiers for Robin Hood Gives Back. So You Think You Can Dance brought us some of the best acts we’ve ever seen, we had perfect weather for beach day, and Chuck and Dick led our Green and White break. As we sit and plan for Robin Hood’s 90th summer, we cannot imagine topping this past summer’s successes. Our administration and staff deserve all the credit. Chuck, Diane, Michelle, Dick and Emily worked endlessly all summer and we cannot thank them enough. Our Group Leaders had over 150 years of experience and worked so hard to make sure each day was special. With this kind of leadership and passion for all things Robin Hood, we are confident that next summer we’ll achieve even greater heights. The busses pull in on June 23rd. Study hard and please thank your parents for sending you to The Realm. We are looking forward to seeing everyone in New York City on November 12th for our reunion!
