Bahasa kiasan adalah bahasa yang menggunakan kata-kata atau ekspresi dengan arti yang berbeda dari makna sebenarnya. Oleh karena itu, penulis memutuskan untuk memilih judul “A Study of Figurative Language in Justin Bieber’s Purpose Album” sebagai judul kertas karya. Metode yang digunakan penulis dalam kertas karya ini adalah metode penelitian kualitatif dan pendekatan deskriptif. Hasil dari studi ini dituliskan dalam bentuk tabel. Penulis menganalisa lagu dengan membaca lirik tersebut secara intensif dan memperhatikan setiap barisnya. Setelah itu, penulis mengklasifikasi bahasa kiasan dari lirik tersebut. Setelah menganalisa kalimat dalam lirik lagu tersebut, penulis menemukan 4 jenis bahasa kiasan yang digunakan dalam lirik tersebut, yaitu simili, personifikasi, hiperbola, dan metafora. Bahasa kaisan yang paling dominan adalah Simili. Tujuan dari studi ini adalah untuk mengetahui bahasa kiasan yang digunakan di lagu milik Justin Bieber dan menggambarkan arti yang ditemukan dalam lirik tersebut. Oleh karena itu, penulis menerima kritikan dan masukan terhadap kertas karya ini agar menjadi lebih baik.

Figurative language is language that uses words or expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation. Therefore, the writer decided to choose “A Study of Figurative Language in Justin Bieber’s Purpose Album” as the title for the study. The method that the writer used in this paper is qualitative method and descriptive approach. The result of the study is written in form of tables. The writer analyzed the song by reading the lyrics intensively and giving attention for each line. After that, the writer classified the figurative language of the lyrics. After analyzed the sentence in the song lyrics, the writer found 4 kinds of figurative language that are used in the lyrics, they are Simile, Personification, Hyperbole, and Metaphor. The most dominant of the figurative language is Simile. The aim of this study was to know the figurative language used in Justin Bieber’s songs and to portray the meanings found in the lyrics. Therefore, the writer welcomes any critics and suggestion to make this paper better.

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Language is the important part of human life. Language is used as the media to communicate with the others. Without language they will only misunderstand. It helps us to communicate, to sharing and to get information.

According to Kreidler (1998:19), language is a system of symbols through which people communicate. The examples of symbols were spoken, written, or sign with the hands. Human being is a social and an individual person and always communicates with each other.

According to Wibowo (2001:3), language is a system of symbols that are meaningful and articulate sound (generated by said tool) which are arbitrary and conventional, which is used as a means of communicating by a group of human beings to give birth to feelings and thougths.

Language refers as a media for human beings to sharing thoughts by words, symbols or even movements as an act of communication. The scientific study of language is called linguistics.

Linguistics has some branches in it. One of it is semantics. Semantics is the study of meaning. Meaning have the important role for those people who want to learn English. By knowing the meaning people will understand the speaker‟s means and get the point and the information about it.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA All the generation, young and adult, they love songs. People use song to represent their feeling to deliever the message for others. Through songs, people not only express their feelings but also their ideas, and their experiences.

Nowadays, song has been the part of human life as a lifestyle. When feeling happy, falling in love, broken heart or even just to start their day before do something people usually listening to the song just to entertain themselves. For the non native speakers, it is hard to understand the meaning of the lyrics. No wonder, they use songs to improve their English skill. However, it is one of the easy way for their English improvisation.

There is a message behind a song. The singers use the terms in their songs to create beautiful lyrics. That is why the non native speakers can not reach the message because they translate word by word so they cannot get the literal meaning. Many kinds of literature give information about non literal meaning. For example, some lyrics in songs contain figurative language to make it more beautiful and interesting.

Figurative language is language that uses figures of speech. It is related to the song lyrics that contains figurative language. There are many types of figurative language such as: metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole, symbols, etc. Figurative language is very common in poetry, but is also used in prose and nonfiction writing.

In this study, writer wants to concern about the meaning of figurative language in album, there are many expression that refers to using of figurative language in the lyrics as the express the emotion of the singer. It is difficult to

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA understand the meaning because the singer has adopted figurative expression to the lyrics. Therefore, this paper will discuss figurative language that found in the song lyrics and try to classify and describe them.

In this study, the writer chooses “Purpose” album, an album by Canadian singer Justin Bieber to be discussed. This album was released on November 13th

2015. Many figurative language can be found in this album. Besides, Justin

Bieber is a popular singer in the world. The are many people know his song lyrics.

The writer interested to discuss lyric of Purpose Album because in lyrics there are some expressions from the singer that are imagine about condition or situation which singer got. So, the writer found figurative language in lyrics to express the emotion from singer that they use to make the lyrics more interesting. This day, figurative has been the part in a song, which can make a song feels more beautiful and attractive.

1.2 Problem of the Study

1. What types of figurative language are found in Justin Bieber‟s Purpose

Album?

2. What are the meanings of lyrics in Justin Bieber‟s Purpose Album?

1.3 Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study are:

a. To identify the types of figurative language are found in Justin Bieber‟s

Purpose Album.

Purpose Album.

1.4 Scope of the Study

The scope of the study is just limited to describe the meaning of figurative language and also reviewing the types of figurative language. They are similes, metaphors, personifications, hyperboles. There are seven songs of the eighteen songs contained in the album to describe, those are: Been You, No Sense, No

Pressure, Get Used To It, I’ll Show You, The Feelings, and All In It.

1.5 Significance of the Study

After this paper is complete, the writer hopes this paper give signifance

1. Practically, this study expected for the reader to understand a song lyric

that use figurative language. The writer hopes the study can give

significance to the reader especially for those who will enjoy, understand

and appreciate Justin Bieber‟s songs. The writer also hopes the reader

knows the figurative language in Justin Bieber‟s song, so when the reader

listents to song of Justin Bieber they know what the meaning of any lyric

in Justin Bieber‟s songs. Besides, the study can give information to whom

that will analyzed Justin Bieber‟s songs more clearly and intently.

2. Theoritically, this study adds the literature in linguistic about figurative

language.

The writer used descriptive qualitative method, because the data were in form of words or written language. Qualitative research is a means for exploring and understanding the meaning individuals or groups ascribe to a social or human problem (Creswell, 2009:22). Also, the writer used the library method by collecting theory from books in the library as the references. The lyrics of the song are copied from AZLyrics. 1. Reading the lyrics carefully and repeatedly.

2. Collecting and classifying the kind of the figurative language.

3. Describing the meaning of each type.

4. Concluding the result of the data.

REVIEW AND RELATED OF LITERATURE

2.1 Definitions of Figurative Language

This chapter covers definitions and theories which are related to support the subject. The writer has done some literature review in many sources such as books, journal and internet websites.

Figurative language is language that uses words or expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation. Usage of some types of figurative language in literature will create a more enchanting and interesting literaly work. It is a unique way for literature authors to express their thoughts and feelings and also to make it extra ordinary.

According to Knickerbockers and Reninger (1963:367), figurative language is sometimes called metaphorical language or simply metaphor because it is Greek ancestor “Metepherein” means to carry meaning beyond its literal meaning. They propose some kinds of figures, namely; simile, metaphor, personification, synecdoche, metonymy, hyperbole, irony, dead metaphor, allusion, paradox, and symbol.

According to Perrrine (1977:61), figurative language is figure of speech a way of adding extra dimensions to language. It is used by the poets because figurative language can say the words what they want to say with interesting expressions meaning by implicit and attractive rather than say it directly and flat.

Figurative language makes a poem becomes more imaginative, attractive and adds

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA the intensity of the poets‟ feeling for poetry to convey their attitude.

Figurative language is not used only in the poetry. This can be applied in the song lyric too.

Figurative language will create interesting meaning but difficult to be interpreted in a literal meaning completely and perfectly. Figurative language cannot be separated from songs. The singers have their own figure of speech in making the song lyrics. This is the way to say something more than the literal meaning and the way to deliver the message behind the beautiful lyrics. This is very useful for people to improve thier English skills.

2.2 Types of Figurative Language

There are some kinds of figurative language. In this chapter, the writer only explained the types of figurative language of shown below.

1. Simile

Simile is stated a comparison of two similar things introduced by the words like or as (Knickerbocker and Renninger, 1963:367).

Example: Watching that movie was like watching grass grow.

Meaning: This implies that the movie has long duration and boring.

2. Personification

Personification is a type of metaphor in which a lifeless object, an animal or abstract ideas made to act like a person and thereby gives animation, vividness

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA and nearness those things which are normally thought of as impersonal and aloof from human affairs or giving human characteristics to an object, animal, or an abstract idea (Knickerbocker and Renninger, 1963:367).

Example: The leaves danced in the wind on the cold October afternoon.

Meaning: This statement means that when the wind blows the leaves and it is like the leaves dance.

3. Hyperbole

Hyperbole is a figure of speech which employs an exaggeration that is used for special effect (Knickerbocker and Renninger, 1963:367).

Example: I‟ve told you a million times to clean your room.

Meaning: The person in this sentence isn‟t really told him a million times, but he

told him more than once. Word a million times is an exaggerated.

4. Metaphor

Metaphor is an implied comparison, or an expression that is used in a new sense, on the basis of similarity between its literal sense and the new thing or situation to which it is applied, with „like‟ or „as‟ omitted (Knickerbocker and

Renninger, 1963:367).

Example: Time is a thief.

Meaning: Time is not actually stealing from you but this convey the idea that hours/days sometimes seem to slip by without you noticing.

2.3 Lyrics

Everyone has their own style for having commuincation. There are many possibilitites happened when people cannot understand the meaning of what they hear or read, sometimes they use the different style to indicate the different idea, that is why not all people can understand the meaning directly. Moreover, people like to express their feeling, emotion and ideas through some ways like poetry, novel or even song by put the attarctive words to make them beautiful. It becomes the media to devote their imagination either happy or sad.

Song is one of the works that can be found easily in everyday life that contains beautiful words. Moreover, song is defined as literary work of musical expression to express human thinking and feeling where it has been part of life that cannot be separated. Sometimes, people find difficulties to understand what composer means in a song, because the delivery of song‟s lyrics is not always the same as what he intends to express. However, create a song lyrics is not easy because the composer has to combine imagination with the language and they should think more about the language which unique, interesting, beautiful even though the language look ambiguous and the words cannot be interpreted literally.

Song‟s lyrics can be as the description of song‟s writer expression to devote the feeling, thought, and idea. Therefore, lyric can be as the form to convey a message in communication. To understand the lyrics, people have to determine the speaker's aim, which sometimes the composer is using figurative language on the song, therefore the listeners not only be able to enjoy the melody of the song but they can get more knowledge from interpreting the point of view

It is also commonly called as an art form language in which many authors or composers use it to create more meaning through language in expressing their ideas and imagination freely and the readers or listeners can get the actual meaning and appreciate their works. In this case, the reader or listener are demanded to construct their own mind in obtaining the intended meaning which differ from the actual literal meaning of the words themselves.

FINDING AND DISCUSSION

In this chapter, the writer would like to describe about four kind of figurative languages found in the “Purpose” album and its meaning. Figurative languages use figure of speech a way of saying something other than the literal meaning of the word.

3.1. Collecting of Figurative Language in Justin Bieber’s Songs

The writer collected figurative language of Justin Bieber‟s songs into table based on those songs. This step was to make a complete list and the readers understood to know title of songs that had figurative language in this study, there were: Been You, No Sense, No Pressure, Get Used To It, I’ll Show You, The

Feelings, and All In It. This step based on following the table.

3.2. Classifying of Figurative Language in Justin Bieber’s Songs

The writer classified figurative language of Justin Bieber‟s songs fourth album on the table. This step was to differentiate types of figurative language and sentences of figurative language to make the readers more understand about result of this research.

Based on the classifying in finding, Simile were the most of figurative languages that consist of seven lyrics of figurative language. The writer found three lyrics of figurative language in Personification. Hyperbole consists of three lyrics of figurative language. The writer found two lyrics of figurative language in simile.

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

4.1 Conclusion

This paper discussed the study of figurative language in Justin bieber‟s

Purpose Album. The Purpose Album was released on November 13th 2015. After analyzing the figurative languages in the Justin Bieber‟s Purpose album, the writer concludes that each lyric really presenting the song. We might learn and understand how the singer tries to tell us about the story of a song. The dominant of figurative type that is used in the song lyrics is simile and the least figurative meaning used in the album is metaphor.

4.2 Suggestion

Figurative language is very interesting to be discussed. Figurative

Language has been a part of conversation or communicating to convey the messages, ideas that can be expressed clearly in economical use of words.

Songs are worth considering being the sources to learn English. The songs can be used as materials in learning English. They help the English students know and understand many types of figurative language, the definitions of figurative language, and how to interpret them. Besides, readers can learn about critical thinking through the use of the songs because some of the meanings are not delivered from the words written.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA The writer proposes some suggestion, but this does not mean that it has perfect finding. For the readers and those who are interested in discussing literary works about song lyrics. It is suggested to understand the whole of song.

Justin Drew Bieber was born on March 1, 1994 at St. Joseph's Hospital in

London, Ontario, Canada and was raised in Stratford, Ontario, Canada. He is the son of Pattie Mallette and Jeremy Bieber. He is of French-Canadian, Irish,
