  • @COACHANDERSONMU HEAD COACH KIM ANDERSON Third Season at Mizzou 293-139 Overall Record (14 Years)
@COACHANDERSONMU HEAD COACH KIM ANDERSON Third Season at Mizzou 293-139 Overall Record (14 years) Kim Anderson was hired as the 18th men’s basketball coach in Mizzou history on April 28, 2014. The two-time Mizzou graduate (1979, ‘81) earned 2014 NABC National Coach of the Year honors after leading the University of Central Missouri to the 2014 NCAA Division II title. Anderson has worked to transition the Tigers’ roster to a point of stability in his first two seasons at the helm, with an emphasis on building leadership and establishing a strong work ethic. The effort was noticeable in Mizzou’s preseason foreign tour to Italy (Aug. 5-15), with the bonded group of Tigers posting a 3-1 record while scoring 83.2 points per game. Four Tigers averaged double-figures in scoring, led by sophomore Cullen VanLeer’s 13.8 points per game. Academic achievement has been a point of emphasis for Anderson’s Tigers, with Mizzou’s latest summer (2016) in the classroom netting nine Tigers with session GPAs of 3.0 or higher. Last summer (2015), Mizzou compiled a team GPA of 3.08 for the first group mark above 3.0 in more than five years. Prior to his arrival at Mizzou, Anderson spent 12 seasons in total at UCM and won nearly 75 percent of his games in more than a decade-plus worth of work. Anderson went 274-95 (.743) during that span and finished his career ranked among the Top 10 in career 2016-17 BASKETBALL 40 THE winning percentage all-time at the ANDERSON NCAA Division II level.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS When writing this dissertation I had the benefit of working with Ted Karamanski. Dr. Karamanski critiqued, rewrote sentences, paragraphs, chapters, and introduced ideas that made this work a more lucid document. In the end I could not have had a better advisor and editor who showed me that researching, writing, and theory could be much deeper than I originally designed. Lewis Erenberg and Susan Hirsch supported my ideas not only on the original committee when I proposed this subject but also before in the classroom and, in the case of Dr.

Fast forward some 20-plus years and Jay Spoonhour has almost come full circle as on April 9, 2012 in Lantz Arena he was named the head coach of the Eastern Illinois University men’s basketball program. Spoonhour is the 14th head coach in the program’s history and only the third head coach since the program joined the NCAA Division I ranks in 1981. Spoonhour met with members of the media, members of the community and members of the Panthers basketball team as he first introduced his family to the crowd before expressing his excitement about getting the Panthers head job. “For anybody that gets a job that is a dream of theirs I don’t know how you start thanking people,” said Spoonhour. “Obviously I want to thank the administration – Dr. Perry, Ms. Burke and Dr. Nadler for the opportunity. I want to also thank everybody here. It’s not like I decided I wanted to be a coach when I got to college. This has been a dream of mine since I was in the fourth grade.” Spoonhour grew up in a basketball family with his dad Charlie a long time head coach at Missouri State, Saint Louis and UNLV.
