14 ISLE OF MAN EXAMINER www.iomtoday.co.im Tuesday, December 17, 2019 BUILDINGS AT RISK Flail and Fleece – uniting the two mills in Union Mills Whilst buildings can be lost, their legacy can be hidden in plain sight! This week Priscilla Lewthwaite of the Isle of Man Family History Society looks at Union Mills – and how the village owes its existence and its name to two mills. oday in the centre of the village of Union Mills stand a few walls, the ruins of what was once a thriving industry and Tthe sole reason for the devel- opment of a village in this area. The history of the mill goes back to our earliest land re- cords, the Manorial Roll 1511- 1515, where it states that the tenant of the corn mill paid 9s 8d Lord’s Rent. The tenant, Oates McTag- gart, in return for paying his rent, received all the landown- ers of the district as tenants of the mill. The tenants had to grind their corn at the mill to which they were apportioned and they were also bound to keep the mill in repair. The repairs could con- sist of being asked to provide straw for thatch (all the early mills were thatched) or having to help transport new mill- stones when required. The mill owners lived a precarious life and ran into financial difficulties many times when the mill had to be mortgaged. John Stevenson inherited the mill, then known as Mullin Oates through his wife, Aver- ick Oates, whose family had owned it for several genera- tions.

It summarises the results of the Call for Sites exercise and explains how a process of identifying additional sites has been undertaken, including additional sites identified through the Preliminary Publicity process. The report goes on to outline which sites qualify for assessment through the Site Assessment Framework (SAF). Such qualification is dependent on a reasoned judgement which splits the long list of sites into the following categories: Category 1 - Sites which do not need to be assessed through the SAF and which can be subsumed within land use designations which reflect the surrounding areas; and Category 2 - Sites which do need to be assessed through the SAF i.e.

  • 1 PUBLIC SESSION Minutes of a Meeting of the Marown Parish
PUBLIC SESSION Minutes of a Meeting of the Marown Parish Commissioners held in their Boardroom on Wednesday March 18th 2020 at 7.00 p.m. In Attendance: Mrs A Lynch Chairman Mr R Sloane Vice-Chairman Mr T Miles Mr A Toohey Mr T O’Hanlon Mr I Maule Clerk 1. Apologies – None 2. Visitors – The Chairman had received an approach from James Mylchreest, director of Mylchreest Motors and Marown resident to provide one or more vehicles free of charge for assisting vulnerable or isolated residents of the parish and wished to explore how this could be achieved. Mr. Mylchreest was joined by Bill Shimmins MHK. Mr Mylchreest said that he could make one or two cars available from the hire fleet because there is no demand at the Airport presently. Drivers could be supplied if necessary, but this might be more difficult. The possibility of creating a bank of non- perishable supplies using the office and Mylchreest Motors as drop points for delivery to housebound people. Mr Shimmins counselled against this type of involvement and suggested that the Commissioners should be the focal point and confine the mission to, for example, collecting shopping or prescriptions etc. which might have been pre-paid or offering to take a dog for a walk. Mr Mylchreest suggested that volunteer drivers (who must be over 25 years of age) could be sought from local sports clubs and other organisations. Following a discussion, it was resolved that volunteers would be sought from the Football, Cricket and Bowling Clubs; that the Commissioners should act as the “hub” co-ordinating activities and that appropriate publicity should be given on the Web-site and Social Media.

PUBLIC SESSION Minutes of a Meeting of the Marown Parish Commissioners held in their Boardroom on Wednesday February 19th 2020 at 7.00 p.m. In Attendance: Mrs A Lynch Chairman Mr R Sloane Vice-Chairman Mr T Miles Mr A Toohey Mr T O’Hanlon Mr I Maule Clerk 1. Apologies – None 2. Visitors 2.1. Mr Lee Cain who is about to deposit a Planning Application for a farm-workerʼs dwelling and new Dairy Unit at Trollaby Farm. Mr Cain explained that he had been a tenant on Trollaby Farm for many years and had just taken the opportunity to purchase the freehold. Whilst a tenant, the scope for improvement was small but he now wishes to expand the farm from its existing farm-assured beef and Limousin cattle herds. Mr Cain presently lives 2½ miles from the farm and security has been an issue with thefts of a tractor, a quad-bike and fuel being endured. There is currently no dwelling on the farm with the old house having been demolished in the 1960s for reasons of safety. Mr Cain now wishes to expand the farm to include an 80-cow dairy herd which creates the need for a dairy. The dairy shed will replace a dilapidated open shed. This expansion will also increase the standard labour requirement from 3.8 to 5.7 units. Calving will require additional supervision for 24 seeks per annum. The new dwelling would be the sole house on the property with the original having been demolished and approval would allow Mr Cain to capitalize on his plans.
