Olaf took into account the fact that this research was conducted during an internship and allowed us to work at our own pace. When needed and shortly before the final deadline, he was still prepared to provide some useful feedback and pointed-out important nuances. The gratitude for Tom is insignificant compared to the effort he puts into the coordination and organization of this master program throughout almost the entire year. Seriously, we do not know where to begin. Secondly, Porter Novelli as a part of the research was done there. Jeroen for showing us to find joy in the trivial things in life, Lies for numerous pleasant carpool rides that significantly softened the blow of those horrible Monday blues and endless traffic jams. And the result of that kind of rigid thinking has been a decline in the very ingenuity the Republican Party needs if we are to win more challenger races. So, this book is about reasoning our way to victory, not following a yellow brick road of rules… And, more specifically, it’s about the kind of creative reasoning that leads to defeating Democratic incumbents. To be frank, I think the problem of figuring out how to beat entrenched incumbents is particularly difficult for the GOP. The more I analyzed what successful challenger campaigns had to do in order to win, the more I came to realize that there were five basic necessities … Confidence Creativity Contrast Controversy Capital Yet, in analyzing elections all over the country, I also came to believe that Republican challenger campaigns have been getting, if anything, worse in all five areas! To do better, we must first understand this: Challenger campaigns are fundamentally different from incumbent campaigns … and need to be run differently! Simple? Obvious? Perhaps, but the only explanation I can give for the poor showing of most challenger campaigns (Democratic as well as Republican) is the apparent mistake a new generation of campaign operatives have made in trying to emulate the success of incumbent campaigns.

    DO THE DEBATES MATTER? AN EXAMINATION OF THE PROGRESSIVELY INFLUENTIAL ROLE OF MAJOR PARTY DEBATES ON AMERICAN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS: 1960-2008 INTRODUCTION There were fifty-six American presidential elections from 1788 to 2008.1 Only ten of the elections, however, included debates between the major party candidates. These occurred from 1960 to 2008, and there were none before that time.2 In 1960, John F. Kennedy and Richard M. Nixon, who were nominees of the Democratic and Republican parties, respectively, participated in a series of four debates. Television first became a significant factor in presidential politics in 1960 and the appeal of the Kennedy-Nixon debates was that they would be televised.3 Television’s presence, however, overshadowed the even greater phenomenon that the Kennedy-Nixon debates were not only the first televised presidential debates, but they were also the first debates between major party candidates ever to take place.4 From that point until 2008, another twenty- two debates were held between the major party presidential candidates, one between the Republican and Independent nominees, and eight between their running mates.5 1 Irwin Unger, These United States, 2nd Ed., Upper Saddle River, NJ: Prentice-Hall, 1999, 2003, A18-A21. Not included are debates between intraparty candidates (such as, among Democrats during the primary season) or general elections held exclusively among non-major party candidates (such as debates among the Constitution Party’s, Green Party’s and Libertarian Party’s nominees), but they do include general election debates between major party vice presidential candidates.

Weiss, College '09, History "A campaign promise is one thing, a signed pledge is quite another": A Political History of the 1994 Republican Revolution January 4, 1995, signaled a momentous change in American politics as Rep. Richard Gephardt (D-MO) handed the gavel of the House of Representatives to the newly elected Speaker of the House, Rep. Newt Gingrich (R-GA). For the first time in four decades, Republicans constituted a majority of the House. This research will examine the 1994 U.S. midterm elections, the so-called Republican Revolution, in which 54 seats changed hands. Was the Republican landslide truly a revolution? And, was it fundamentally a triumph of ideas or of partisan politics? To answer these questions, I will examine Republican strategy, the formulation of the “Contract with America,” the Democratic Party’s response, the Contract’s legislative implementation, and finally the stalling of the Revolution with the government shutdowns of 1995–1996.
