President’s Report

It is hard to reflect on our 2012 season without dwelling on the last game of the year, but that would be undervaluing what we achieved in the past year because of one gut-wrenching afternoon.

Scott West, in first year as a Senior Coach, has set himself and this club a benchmark of performance on and off the field that is to be admired. His ability to gel the playing group behind his vision and plans was a standout of the season and provides a foundation for success, both now and into the future. The players embraced his game plan and flourished, exemplified by Ben Ross and – one a Liston Trophy winner, the other on an AFL list after three years in our system.

Scott did not run a one man band, however, and his assistants made valuable contributions to the football program, with Chris Gilham taking his Development side to the final four as well. Like the playing list, our coaching staff has seen some arrivals and departures in the off season. Wade Chapman, Leigh Harding, Danny Warren and Frank Fopiani are no longer with us and we welcome Jarrod Moore, Keenan Reynolds, Scott Korczynski, Michael Pisani and Tim Ruffles, with two more to be added. I have every reason to believe we are going into the new season in great shape on field.

Our alignment with North continues to enhance both football clubs. The exchange of ideas and information extends beyond the playing arena and allows both clubs to bring community programs to the City of Wyndham. We look forward to working with new CEO Carl Delina and the team at the Kangaroos.

Our social venue, the Tigers Clubhouse, continues to be a top class venue for patrons and a well run and operated arm of the Werribee Football Club. My thanks go to Rhys and his dedicated team and to the Board of the TCH. Increased competition in the area from new venues is presenting challenges and everyone is determined to see the Tigers Clubhouse continue to be a premier hospitality venue in the City of Wyndham. We are negotiating with the management company of the Clubhouse with a view to some major improvements to the property. When – and how – this project will occur will be decided sooner rather than later.

As I enter my eighth year as President I want to thank those on the Board for their support, work and dedication. The responsibilities that come with being on the Board are vast and the time commitment is great. It is a selfless task but one that is greatly appreciated by everyone involved at the club. I acknowledge our club patron Julia Gillard, the Prime Minister of Australia, who is generous with her time and support when her schedule allows. We are proud to have Julia in that role, as we are of Merv Hughes and Russell Mark our number one ticket holders.

Just when I think Mark Penaluna can’t do more, he does. Mark is the consummate CEO who is across every aspect of the club and is not frightened to get his hands dirty, sometimes too much. His dedication and work ethic is unsurpassed and the club has a lot to thank him for. Our Football Operations Manager Stuart Balloch is cut from the same cloth as Mark and together they are a formidable team that steers our club in the right direction.

Chris Gallagher is now full time as Club Community Development Manager, a role that other VFL clubs are “borrowing” from our model. In fact, we are expanding further by appointing one of our players to a part time role running our

5 schools program. This kind of initiative and vision makes the Werribee Football Club a leader in the competition. Sharon Robinson, our Office Manager, is another integral part of our organization, as is our Media Manager Kevin Hillier. We have a small staff but the quality is sublime.

To our sponsors I say thanks for continuing to show your support in a way that allows us to run our football club as a robust competitor in the second highest competition in the country. I want to especially thank Ballan Holden for being our major sponsor for what is now 14 years. The Ballan family is a very important part of the Werribee Football Club.

Our relationship with all levels of Wyndham Council continues to grow and produce a facility and ground that everyone can be proud of, and that the community has access to and ownership of. I am pleased to report that Council has allocated money for an architectural design to be drawn of the redevelopment for our ground. Council has also indicated its commitment to the overall redevelopment plan for the future.

I acknowledge the role of the many volunteers who help make our club tick over day after day. Their work is much appreciated and so is what they contribute to the fabric of our football club.

I want to make special mention of Robbie Castello. Robbie and his family epitomize all that is great about the game and our football club. Robbie came to the club looking to play the best standard he could. He has worked exceptionally hard to get where he is today. He is captain, games record holder, a best and fairest winner and one of the most liked and respected players in the competition. The Castello Clan, led by Robbie’s parents, Vince and Maria, along with Robbie’s brothers, nieces, nephews and every other Castello, have been with him every step of the way.

Whether it is my family – and I thank my wife Pauline again for her patience and support, the Castello family, the Ballan family or Scott and Leshelle West and their boys, I am glad our football club, while a fiercely determined unit on the field, is a welcoming, supportive and friendly home off the field. GO TIGERS

CEO’s Report

Following a successful year in 2011, I believe at the conclusion of the 2012 season the VFL competition perceives the Werribee Football Club as a leader in many areas. Opposition clubs are glowing in praise of our facilities – so much so that several feel the VFL Finals Series should be played at Avalon Airport Oval. This is an option that we should fully explore.

Within its latest budget, the City of Wyndham allocated $5.5 million towards a major redevelopment of Avalon Airport Oval. This would include the relocation of the Werribee Cricket Club. We are working through the redevelopment process with Council – Major Projects Team. This is probably a once in a generation opportunity.

Financially, we achieved our 9th successive profit. We are, however, heavily reliant on the Tigers Clubhouse to achieve that position. Given the increased professionalism required to compete in this level of competition, our football expenditure continues to rise. We must explore new revenue opportunities, i.e: major promotional signage, and not rely on our sponsorship dollars to increase.

Our Capital Works program continued via the purchase of: - 14 seat Mini Bus - New tables, chairs & electronic blinds for the Sports Club - Construction of new interchange benches - New artificial turf (adjacent to boundary line)

There are many other items that we need to consider over the coming years including an electronic scoreboard extension, improved rehab facilities and more seating.

In October 2011, we appointed Scott West as our full time Senior Coach. Scott brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to this position. I am sure all WFC stakeholders have been suitably impressed with what he has achieved.

We should feel very proud of our on field achievements: - Senior VFL – Preliminary Finalist - Development VFL – Preliminary Finalist - – Grand Finalist - Qualify for 2013 Foxtel Cup - J.J.Liston Trophy – Ben Ross - VFL State Representatives – Kyle Hartigan and Ben Ross - Rookie Listed to Adelaide Crows – Kyle Hartigan - Reserves Coach – Leigh Harding

Scott should feel very proud of his achievements in 2012, though I know how disappointed he was in not playing at Etihad Stadium on VFL day. Well done, Scott.

7 As should everybody within our Football Department. Just to name a few – Doug Brown and his fitness team, Nathan Hickman and all physios, Dr Greg Anderson, Darren De Jong and all the trainers, Chris Gilham, Leigh Harding, Wade Chapman, Frank Fopiani, Troy Beamond, Danny Warren, Daniel Farrar, Glenn McGaw, Damien Frankling, Alan Clayton, George Riddiford, Ashley Moloney, Lorraine Joiner, Andy Demetriou – all trainers, runners, statisticians, Team Managers and everybody associated with putting our teams onto the ground. Last year, it required 97 people to assist WFC in having our 2 teams take the field.

Thanks to our Football Manager Stuart Balloch, who co-ordinates our Footy Department, amongst other things. Another terrific year, Stu.

As stated previously, our financial reliance on income via the Tigers Clubhouse is ongoing, yet the gaming industry is more difficult to navigate through than ever before. Since 1999 we have been serviced via Tatts & Tabcorp. This all ended in August 2012, with the State Government deciding to offer all clubs and hotels the opportunity of selecting their own supplier or potentially “go alone.”

We decided after many, many meetings to select Momentum Gaming (signing for 3 years). During 2012 we were able to secure an additional 10 EGMs – taking our total to 75, remembering that we were able to increase our EGMs from 35 to 50 (2006) and 50 to 65 (2009). Last year, we were also able to finalise the re-payment of Tigers Clubhouse chattels (800k). With the opening of new gaming venues such as Hotel 520, Sanctuary Lakes Hotel and soon Point Cook Hotel, as well as the loss of our long term Manager Julie Shelton, there will be challenging times ahead.

The Werribee Football Club’s Community involvement was bigger than ever last year (refer to Chris Gallagher’s report). More than ever, others like our local police and Council are seeking our assistance. I think we should feel very proud about how we assist our growing and diverse population. Well done to Chris, our players and staff.

Our Strategic Plan has been presented to various stakeholders to an overwhelmingly favourable response. This can only help in our negotiations with Council, in relation to our re-development and other matters. I expect that the VFL competition will be faced with many changes at the conclusion of this season, with a sub committee expected to provide recommendations within the next six months.

From a personal perspective I would like to thank: - John Nicol for his loyal support and wonderful advice he has given to me as President for seven years - The WFC Board for all of your assistance - Kevin Hillier for once again providing the type of professionalism that sets our club apart from the rest of the VFL competition - All WFC football staff, volunteers, players and especially members - The WFC staff – Stuart Balloch, Chris Gallagher, Sharon Robinson, Samantha Edwards, Scott West and Michael Russell for your passion and willingness to “go beyond the call.”

Finally, thanks to everybody who has supported our club in 2012 and trust that you can once again jump back on board in 2013.

MEDIA REPORT

The continuing importance of the role the media plays in so many areas of our football club grows every year. The introduction and importance of social media and its immediate impact has made a big difference to the way the club has - and must - view its entire media strategy. Supporters have an insatiable thirst for information and they want it delivered first, fast, accurately and with photos, audio or video to any of three media platforms.

AFL clubs have identified this and have beefed up their media units with digital media specific staff. We are not in that position but like our Werribee listed players, our media is competing with its AFL opponents and must make every endeavour to remain as relevant and interesting to consumers and reach a standard that, while costing much less, looks and sounds as good.

The Werribee Football Club continues to be robust in its pursuit of providing new content for a very wide variety of media outlets.

Radio This year the popular “Tiger Talk” continued on WYN FM on Friday afternoons from 4 until 5pm. My thanks to Ben Taylor for his contribution and especially to Scott West, who was on every week with his thoughts on each game. In 2013 we are going to make the program 30 minutes, from 4.30 until 5pm. It is also hoped segments of the show will be available on our website after the show has finished. We also had a weekly segment on the WRFL WYN FM show which will continue in 2013. This year we probably had more exposure on SEN due to Scott’s profile and the fact we were in the finals.

Newspapers and Publications We received game coverage from all three local papers as well as the dailies. The time and day of our matches impacted the space we were given but overall it was good. Our relationships with the Star and Weekly were of great benefit in promoting our home games and events and other aspects of the club. The Weekly will have a weekly column from Scott West this year and the Star will also run at least 12 Werribee pages. This is outside of feature stories and game coverage. The profile of our Senior Coach and our players will again guarantee space in publications like ‘Inside Footy’ and the VFL Record. We have also put in place a partnership with the Geelong Independent for 2013 to highlight our connection with the Falcons and the Geelong area. Our partnership with the WRFL will see us again featured in their Record.

Website Unfortunately we did not get the website upgrade done in 2012 due to a number of factors, the lack of manpower being the most obvious. The website is our most valuable asset going forward and we need to make sure it is given the appropriate funding to continue to be our Myer Christmas Window. It helps in getting sponsors, players, supporters - you name it. The better we can make it look and the easier we can make it for us and the supporters, and the drive by viewers, the better. We certainly created a lot of content in 2012 with videos, photos and stories. The aim for the future is to make this content of the highest quality given our financial restraints.

Events We went with a theme of Olympics for our President’s Lunches for 2012, and with the likes of Alisa Camplin and Jana Pittman as our guest speakers along with our own Russell and Lauryn Mark, we achieved a standard that provided entertainment and wow factor for our supporters and sponsors. Our President’s Lunches are the envy of other clubs for our speakers, our football content and our entertainment factor. We have set a very high standard. We also boast some very top end events like the Auction and Presentation Night. Rob Westwood has been an outstanding addition to our Auction Night of recent years and deserves a special mention.

Summation The problem for me with articulating the value of the Media component of the Werribee Football Club is that you cannot put a dollar value on it, yet it does cost the club money and that cost is rising. One of the challenges in 2013 is to start to make some revenue from these media streams. I would like to thank the very supportive office staff in Mark, Stuart, Chris and Sharon for their support and help. We back each other up and fill in the spaces. I thank Ben Taylor, Ben Carbonaro and Andrew Muscat who have given their time to the club through our media. Thanks to our photographers Mark Gadsen, Arj Greise and Eber Rabich for the images you can see in our website photo galleries. I want to close by saying that Scott West was terrific in terms of his availability, his cooperation and his willingness to cope with the demands placed on him by me.

SENIOR COACH’S REPORT

Success can be measured in so many ways. As I reflect on the 2012 season, I have a large degree of satisfaction and pride in what the club, and individuals within the club, were able to achieve.

Heading into the season I was reasonably confident that we had put together a good list of players that would enable us to be competitive, not only in the seniors, but also in the development league. My philosophy from day one was that we were aiming to have club success – a ‘one in, all in’ attitude. It was great that not only did the players buy into this, but all staff involved at the club also bought into it.

We certainly didn’t start the way in which I would have liked. Our form was indifferent from week to week, but more concerning was the indifferent form during games. On reflection, having so many Kangaroos players coming back and the lack of training together (the first time we saw them was in the rooms prior to round one) meant we struggled to gel as a team.

We took an opportunity in our first Foxtel Cup game to play a full strength team against the Burnie Dockers. We did this with the hope that our players, in a lower intensity game, would start to understand each other’s game styles. I believe this was the catalyst that allowed us to go on and eventually finish third.

I couldn’t have been happier with the attitude and performance of the Kangaroos players that represented Werribee during the season. Obviously there are players who are disappointed that they are not playing senior AFL football, but what they brought to us was a professional approach and a mentality of success.

One downside with the alignment is the lack of training together. I think for the year we would have trained together about 6 times, with two of those being in Preliminary Final week as the Kangaroos were out of the finals. I believe that, if we are serious about ultimate success, this situation needs to change, as the relationships between the players is just as important as the game plan.

As I wrote earlier, success can be measured in different ways. Look at what we achieved in 2012:

 fourth after the home and away season;

 both senior and development teams third after finals;

 a Foxtel Cup appearance with wins at Etihad, the MCG and the ‘Gabba;

 playing in the Foxtel Cup Grand Final at Subiaco Oval;

 Ben Ross and Kyle Hartigan in the VFL state team;

 Ben Ross winning the J.J. Liston Trophy;

 Kyle Hartigan being drafted by the Adelaide Crows.

But ...

The disappointment of losing the Preliminary Final still sits in the forefront of all our minds.

Since I took over as coach I have had two aims:

1. To develop players to become better on and off the field. 2. To have success. We had some success, but now we aim for

ULTIMATE SUCCESS

SCOTT WEST 2012 SENIOR COACH

10 RESERVES COACH’S REPORT

Firstly, I would like to thank Senior Coach Scott West for his fantastic support and guidance throughout the 2012 season and the Werribee Football Club for the opportunity to once again coach the Development League team.

On field, the Development League team had a very consistent year. After a strong start to the season, we were able to cement a spot in the top couple on the ladder, a position which we were able to hold onto, finishing the home and away season in 2nd spot behind the undefeated Williamstown. The good form of the players continued to put pressure on the senior players for their spots, which was a very healthy position for the club to be in, having a lot of in-form players to choose from.

Our high ladder position got us through the first round of the finals series and into a preliminary final against Box Hill. The boys played their hearts out, just coming up short against a very strong and talented Box Hill outfit, who have been the premier team at this level for a number of years. The boys were obviously very disappointed with not making the grand final, but can be very proud of their season and the endless hard work they put into it, which will hold them in good stead for the future.

There were many positives for the year. Our development program and academy continue to go from strength to strength, giving our younger players every opportunity to be their best and fulfil their potential. The club was delighted to have Kyle Hartigan rookie listed by the . Kyle has worked tirelessly on his game in our academy program during his 3 years at the club. His drafting is a great reward for his persistence and desire to improve himself, which has earned him his opportunity to play at the top level. The club is always looking to improve this program and it will be bigger and better again in 2013 under new development/academy coach Scott Korczynski.

On field, seven first year players from the TAC Cup made their VFL senior debut as the club continues to blood its younger players. This is a positive sign for our future, while also giving these guys the exposure and experience of mixing it with AFL listed players on a regular basis.

Thank you to Mark Penaluna, Stuart Balloch, all the coaches and the match day staff for their great support of our players at the development level. We continue to be a leader in development of young players within the VFL, which will hopefully see more of our young players follow Kyle Hartigan and the many others before him into the AFL ranks in the coming years. CHRIS GILHAM RESERVES COACH COMMUNITY REPORT

The Werribee Football Club prides itself on being the leader of community initiatives within the VFL. In 2012 a number of new community concepts were implemented in partnership with numerous stakeholders within the community and also a continuation of established initiatives.

School programs have proven to be a successful way to engage youth into sport with the club running a number of programs including:

 The Wyndham City Council’s “Active Kids” program – delivering football clinics to 18 schools in Wyndham with 2160 primary school students participating.  The North ’s “Huddle” program which had 18 schools involved in 4 week programs over 3 terms.  Participation in 16 Australian Sports Commission after school programs over 4 terms with Werribee Football Club players  Handing out 17,000 WFC family passes to primary schools in Wyndham

Outside of schools the club also works with a number of community partners, including:

 AFL Auskick  FIDA teams  Reclink

 YMCA  AFL Victoria  NMFC

 ASC  WRFL  YRC Centres

 Victoria Police  Werribee Plaza  Salvation Army

 AFL Multicultural  Local Clubs  Wyndham City Council Department

The work done by the club in the community could not be completed without the help of our players. I would like to thank all the players for the time and effort they put back into our community projects.

The Werribee Football Club will continue to enhance the reputation of our community by developing excellence in people through sport, with a focus on involving the CALD community in organised sport and increasing participation in sport. CHRIS GALLAGHER COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT MANAGER 11
