1. COVID-19 IN PAKISTAN

Pakistan reported 2,839 new cases and 40 deaths in the past 24 hours. Pakistan also conducted 33,303 tests in the span of 24 hours (P.S. this data was last updated on November 30 at 7:34am).

The highest number of COVID-19 cases are reportedly coming from Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Lahore, Peshawar and Karachi.

2. Arrest orders following Student Solidarity March

What’s going on? On Friday, hundreds of activists and students from various educational institutions came together for a Student Solidarity March. The Student Action Committee (SAC) organized the march in Lahore. The SAC is a collection of student organizations from across the country. They demanded free education, the restoration of student unions, committees against harassment on campuses, and proper internet facilities. They also spoke out against the current govt’s decision to cut the education budget.

The details: Pakistan’s Twittersphere erupted with “WTFs” and “WTHs” after Lahore’s Deputy Commissioner (DC) issued orders to arrest academic, activist, and rally participant, Ammar Ali Jan. The DC accused Jan of being a threat to public safety. In response, Jan’s supporters claimed the protests were peaceful. There was some confusion on Twitter, because people kept saying “I strongly condemn the arrest of #AmmarAliJan.” However, Jan tweeted that he was ALMOST arrested, but his “comrades” stepped up to help.

The context: There was a Student Solidarity March last year in November as well, which made similar demands. Participants called for the restoration of student unions and better education facilities. They also protested against price hikes and harassment. General Zia-ul- Haq’s military regime banned student unions in 1984. This countrywide ban was reportedly an attempt to reduce violent clashes between students on campus.

Looking ahead: Jan isn’t out of the woods yet. He still needs pre-arrest bail. It’s unclear why arrest orders were only issued for Jan and not his friends who also participated in the rally.

The bottom line: If you’re feeling a strong sense of dejavu, it’s because the same demands are pretty much coming up again. Protesting students believe student unions will give them

appropriate representation on campus so they can have a voice in decisions that impact them.

3. Cher’s surprise visit to Pakistan

Activists have been campaigning to get Kaavan the elephant out of Marghazar Zoo in Islamabad. American pop star and actress, Cher, was also a vocal advocate of Kaavan’s resettlement. In July 2020, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) approved Kaavan’s transfer to an animal sanctuary in Cambodia, where he will be around other elephants. Animal welfare group, Four Paws, is managing Kaavan’s relocation. However, Cher, turned up in Pakistan on Friday to visit Kaavan before his big move on Sunday! People were pleasantly surprised when they saw a video of Cher sitting with Prime Minister (PM) Imran Khan at his residence. She also sang to Kaavan and thanked PM Khan.

Backstory: Kaavan is a 36-year-old bull elephant. He’s also known as the “world’s loneliest elephant.” He was brought to Pakistan as a gift from Sri-Lanka, and has been living at Marghazar Zoo since 1985. Kaavan’s partner elephant, Saheli, died in 2012 after getting an infection.

Kaavan’s alleged mistreatment: Kaavan developed behavioural issues due to his isolation. He also became overweight after eating 550 pounds of pure sugar cane every day, with the occasional fruit or vegetable. He reportedly wasn’t given proper shelter during Pakistan’s intensely hot summers. Animal rights activists alleged that Kaavan spent years in chains and didn’t receive appropriate veterinary care. Zoo officials denied allegations about Kaavan’s pitiful treatment, and claimed he was just longing for a new mate. In May 2020, the IHC said Marghazar Zoo should close since animals were living in “cruel conditions.”
