Qualsiasi disco creato in modo diverso (con un unico file .vob o .m2v inserito direttamente nella root del dvd, con il dvd in formato diverso - magari hfs+ o iso9660 - oppure con cartelle diverse da quelle citate prima) non sono dei veri DVD Video e quindi ci sono fortissime probabilità che i normali lettori da tv non li riconoscano. Quando il flusso video è unito all'audio (si dice multiplexato), il file si presenterà con estensione MPG. Nel caso fosse separato (si dice anche demultiplexato), in questo caso la parte video avrà generalmente estensione M2V (ma anche MV2 o MPV), mentre la parte audio avrà estensione MP2, AC3 o PCM a seconda del formato utilizzato.
