WHITMAN COLLEGE -- Two all-conference linemen and one back head 21 returning

1 ettermen at the Wall a Walla school, and coach Keith Loper figures he will field a team with good potential. Solly Davis, a fullback with great speed, returns after two seasons and should add to the offensive dimension of the Missionaries. Although they were defeated soundly last year, nearly the entire team returns to give cause for opponents 1 fear.

UNIVERSITY OF PUGET SOUNL -- Injuries hurt the Loggers last year and coach

John Heinrick does not have the kind of depth he wants. But the addition of two

UW transfers--Andy Pazaruski (215-pound center) and Steve Maddocks ( QB)-will help as does 21 lettermen from the 6-2-1 team of last year. All-Evergreen tackle

Harlan Patterson and Gary Brown (235) will anchor the line and the ends and back field are strong. Les Ross heads the pass receivers and will set more records, and nine lettermen return to carry the ball.

WHITWORTH CCLLEGE -- The Pirates will be looking for an improvement of their

6-1 Evergreen conference championship mark of last year and they have 22 lettermen back to try it. Coach Sam Adams will again call on 250-pound pro prospect Ken

Sugarman to anchor the line from his tackle slot with Marty McWhinney, center, and guard Gene Baker also returning from last year's club. The backfield will miss Little all-American halfback John Murio, but Charlie Reed, a pounding runner, will be back.

EASTERN WA SHINGTON -- The Savages will be headed by a new coaching staff this year as Dave Holmes moves into the top spot. He will be assisted by , 14 Bob Anderson, and Dave Crowell. Holmes is not talking about his '63 prospects, but does say, "We '11 be better. " The Savages lost nine straight last year in cluding six conference tilts.

PACIFIC UNIVERSITY -- The Badgers will be "much improved" according to coach Noah Allen. Frank vValker will the 11on-the-ground" attack.

The agile junior is rated as a fine runner and an average passer. "We'll be working on our offense," Allen asserts. The Oregonians lost games by six, two, and three points last year and Allen promises to improve the scoring punch.

PACIFIC LUTHERAN -- The Knights appear to be one of the best PLU teams in recent years. The line is adequate with five starters back headed by guard

Kevin Thomas and linebacker Jim Cypert. Fullback Keith Shahan tops the returning backs and he is within earshot of the PLU total offense mark. End

Mike Smith is a fine performer and Coach Roy Carlson has 17 lettermen returning to lead the Black and Gold.

WESTERN 'WASHINGTON -- Dr. Jim Lounsberry feels he will have the best backfield in the Evergreen Conference and he has quarterback Terry Parker and halfbacks Dick Nicholl and Ron Roe to prove it. Graduation of ends Bob Plotts and Gary Moore will hurt at this position, but Keith Shugarts is still around at that position. The line will be mobile with guard Dave Alfred, tackle John

Fullerton, and center Shelly Thiel returning. Transfers Tom Brandon and Ron

Gilbert should also help the Viking efforts. WHAT WILL THE ~llLDCATS BE LIKE IN 1963? 15

A new coach, Mel Thompson, will greet 22 Wildcat lettermen this fall and the Central football fans can watch with interest a well-conditioned, hard hitting club.

Thompson, who played his college ball at Washington State University, is a stickler for conditioning, and he promises his club will not be out-hustled.

Guard Jay Haney and tackle Arnie Tyler will be gone from last year's team and they will be missed, but CWSC fans will recognize big Dick Shannon, all-Evergreen tackle, as he anchors the forward wall again this year.

Art Ellis and Lou Lawrence from last year's squad and Jerry Lowe from the championship squad of 1961 top the end candidates. Dave Oss and Byron

Johnson are back with Shannon at tackle; and four guards from last year are back.

In the backfield the Cats will have all-conference quarterback Phil Fitterer along with tough Bill Ishida, the 140-pound dynamo. Thompson also has transfer fullback Joel Barnell from WU, and halfback Jay Lane and Jack Curtright, both from the 1961 championship club.

"We'll be older and should be a little faster this year," Thompson said.

"We have a tough schedule with Vi/hitworth and UPS on consecutive Saturday's early in the year." And if that isn't enough the Wildcats meet both clubs again later in the year.

"We shouldn't have to play too many freshmen, and I hope our transfers play as well as they are capable, if they do, we could get pretty tough as the season progresses," the amiable coach states.

Along with a new head coach, the Wildcats will also find Art Hutton, former

Yakima Eisenhower coach, as a new assistant and Tyler will serve as a graduate football assistant. The returning assistant coach is Jim Nylander. Adrian (Bink)

Beamer, last year's coach, is now the athletic director. 1962 CENTRAL STATISTICS 16
