After dabbling in the 400-metre and 100-metre hurdles, Newman was introduced to pole vault at age 16 and has been setting Canadian records in the event ever since. She currently holds the Canadian youth (3.91 metres), junior (4.4 metres) and the recently re-set senior female (4.71 metres) pole vault marks. Newman has achieved considerable international success, as well. She won gold at the 2013 Pan American Junior Championships in Medellin, Colombia, her best clearance of 4.40 metres setting both Canadian and meet records. She followed that up by winning a bronze medal competing with senior athletes at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. Newman made her Olympic debut in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, vaulting 4.45 metres to secure 17th place in a field of 36 competitors. That experience capped a superb 2016 for Newman, who graduated from university, won the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) pole vault title, finished second in her specialty at the NCAA championships and finished first at the Canadian Track & Field Championships in Edmonton, Alta., securing her Olympic berth. As a high school student-athlete, Newman caught the attention of track and field observers when she successfully cleared 4.06 metres, setting a national inter-scholastic record and becoming the first Canadian female high school student to clear four metres in her event. Newman built on her high-school success by posting four impressive NCAA seasons, competing in 2013 for Eastern Michigan University and from 2014-2016 for the University of Miami, where she holds the school pole vault record. Her goal post-university is to land on the podium at a World Championships or the Olympics, something no Canadian female pole vaulter has ever done. .

The competitions will allow athletes to register official performances and focus exclusively on pole vault, currently one of the hottest events in track and field. Two competitions will take place simultaneously, on Place de l'Europe, in the heart of the city, with both a female and a male event. The athletes are going to jump alternately, a man followed by a woman, on two separate and parallel tracks. The organisers have already managed to attract the wold's bests for the two events: the world record holder, the Swedish prodigy Armand "Mondo" Duplantis (6m18 this winter indoors), the previous world record holder Renaud Lavillenie from France, the American Sam Kendricks, Piotr Lisek and Pawel Wojciechowski from Poland and Cole Wash (USA). The women's field is very promising, too, with the presence of indoor world champion Sandi Morris from the United States, the Greek Ekaterini Stefanidi (Olympic and world champion), the Russian Anzhelika Sidorova, the Swede Angelica Bengtsson, and Alysha Newman from Canada. Swiss stars Angelica Moser and Nicole Büchler will give their best to challenge them. The list will be finalised over the coming weeks to reach up to sixteen or eighteen athletes.
