Showcase, in association with Starz and Sony Pictures Television, has announced today that Sophie Skelton (Foyle’s War) will play the role of “Brianna” in the Golden Globe Award-nominated series Outlander. The series is adapted from Diana Gabaldon’s international best-selling books by Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: The Next Generation). The highly anticipated second season premieres on Showcase in April 2016.

Brianna, a striking, redheaded young lady, is the daughter of the lead characters Claire and Jamie Fraser. Strong-minded and intelligent beyond her years (traits inherited from both her mother and father), Brianna has a distinctly scholastic mind-set and a healthy dose of Fraser stubbornness.

Skelton joins , previously announced to play Roger Wakefield, the adult version of Reverend Wakefield’s son.

Sophie Skelton was born in Woodford, Cheshire, U.K. and her love of ballet led to her stage debut at the age of four. This encouraged her to opt for a career playing other people on stage and screen. A trained singer and dancer, she performed in Fiddler on the Roof in 2008, followed by roles in Les Miserables, West Side Story and Mary Poppins. She has appeared in TV series including Doctors, DCI Banks, Waterloo Road and Foyle’s War. She and most recently appeared in the lead role of Gemma Holt in an episode of the BBC drama Casualty - Forsaking All Others.

Skelton will shortly be seen in the title role in Ren, a fantasy action-adventure series for Mythica Entertainment in which she plays a young woman marked by an ancient spirit who must risk everything to discover the truth about her life. She will also appear in the role of Jess in the soon to be released film, Another Mother’s Son, directed by Christopher Menaul, followed by the film Ladybird, directed by Tim Fellingham and Charlotte Stente Nelson, in which she plays the role of Rose.

Book Two of Outlander begins as Claire and Jamie arrive in France, hell-bent on infiltrating the Jacobite rebellion led by Prince Charles Stuart, and stopping the battle of Culloden. With the help of his cousin Jared, a local wine merchant, Jamie and Claire are thrown into the lavish world of French society, where intrigue and parties are abundant, but political gain proves far less fruitful. Altering the course of history presents challenges that begin to weigh on the very fabric of their relationship. However, armed with the knowledge of what lies ahead, Claire and Jamie must race to prevent a doomed Highland uprising, and the extinction of Scottish life as they know it.

Skelton and Rankin join the cast which features Golden Globe Award nominee Caitriona Balfe (Claire Randall Fraser), Sam Heughan (Jamie Fraser), Golden Globe Award nominee Tobias Menzies (Frank Randall/Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall), Graham McTavish (Dougal MacKenzie), Gary Lewis (Colum MacKenzie), Duncan Lacroix (Murtagh FitzGibbons Fraser), Rosie Day (Mary Hawkins), Claire Sermonne (Louise De Rohan) and Stanley Webber (Le Comte St Germain).

Diana Gabaldon’s eight-book series has sold more than 26 million copies worldwide and all eight books in the series have graced the New York Times best-sellers list.

Ronald D. Moore, Jim Kohlberg, Andy Harries, Maril Davis, Ira Steven Behr, Toni Graphia and Anne Kenney serve as executive producers of Outlander, which is produced by Tall Ship Productions, Story Mining & Supply Company and Left Bank Pictures in association with Sony Pictures Television.
