According to research conducted by Optaros, Inc., and InformationWeek magazine, 87 percent of the 512 companies surveyed use open source software, with companies earning over $1 billion in annual revenue saving an average of $3.3 million by using open source software in 2004.1 Open source is not just staying in computer rooms either-it is increasingly grabbing intellectual property headlines and entering mainstream news on issues like the following: i. Are Projects Hosted on Sourceforge.net Representative of the Population of Free/Open Source Software Projects? Bob English February 5, 2008 Introduction We are researchers studying Free/Open Source Software (FOSS) projects . Because some of our work uses data gathered from Sourceforge.net (SF), a web site that hosts FOSS projects, we consider it important to understand how representative SF is of the entire population of FOSS projects. While SF is probably hosts the greatest number of FOSS projects, there are many other similar hosting sites. In addition, many FOSS projects maintain their own web sites and other project infrastructure on their own servers. Based on performing an Internet search and literature review (see Appendix for search procedures), it appears that no one knows how many Free/Open Source Software Projects exist in the world or how many people are working on them. Because the population of FOSS projects and developers is unknown, it is not surprising that we were not able to find any empirical analysis to assess how representative SF is of this unknown population. Although an extensive empirical analysis has not been performed, many researchers have considered the question or related questions. The next section of this paper reviews some of the FOSS literature that discusses the representativeness of SF. The third section of the paper describes some ideas for empirically exploring the representativeness of SF. The paper closes with some arguments for believing SF is the best choice for those interested in studying the population of FOSS projects. Literature Review In one of the earliest references to the representativeness of SF, Madley, Freeh and Tynan (2002) mention that they assumed that SF was representative because of its popularity and because of the number of projects hosted there, although they note that this assumption “needs to be confirmed” (p. -

Oskar Andersson October 3 2014, Stockholm 2 Abstract Contemporary approaches to cross-platform mobile application development, such as hybrid apps from PhoneGap and generated native apps from Xamarin, show promise in reducing development time towards Android, iOS and other platforms. At the same time, studies show that there are various problems associated with these approaches, including suffering user experiences and codebases that are difficult to maintain and test properly. In this thesis, a novel prototype framework called Building Blocks was developed with the purpose of investigating the feasibility of utilizing component-based software engineering in solving this problem. The prototype was developed towards Android along with a web interface that allowed users to assemble an Android app using software components. The report concludes that component-based software engineering can be – and already is – utilized successfully to improve cross-platform mobile app development with special regards to user experience. Qualitative data indicate that Building Blocks as a concept is flexible and shows promise for mobile app development in which functionality is often reused, such as enterprise apps. -

The Latest Version of the Installation Guide
1 Installation Dicodess is a software framework for developing distributed cooperative decision sup- port systems. A system based on Dicodess is a collection of elements or components that are organized for a common purpose. These components come from various origins, various vendors, and under different licenses, but they all share a common feature: they are available for free. The next section briefly presents the installation process of Di- codess. The remaining of this chapter describes the various components of the software framework, as well as their relationships. This and the following chapters are based on version 1.0 of Dicodess. If you use a different version of the software, you may notice slight dif- ferences in the screenshots and the accompanying explanation. The latest version of the user manual is always included with the software package, in the /manual folder. 1.1 Downloading and Installing Dicodess Download the Dicodess software from the SourceForge.net website, at http://www.sf.net/ projects/dicodess (“Latest File Releases”, download). We recommend downloading the latest version of the software, unless you have good reasons to use an older version. Di- codess is currently available in two forms: as an EXEcutable installer or as a ZIP archive. Feel free to download the package that best suits your needs. Once the installer is copied on your hard drive, double click on it to start it (or unzip it first if you downloaded the ZIP archive). At the moment, Dicodess is only available on Windows platforms. However, nearly all the components of the software framework are ready to run on Unix-like platforms (Dicodess classes, Jini Network Technology, Java Runtime Environment, and the mathematical solv- er). -

3 Tests of Graphics Rendering in Browsers JAAK HENNO Tallinn University of Technology HANNU JAAKKOLA, Tampere University of Technology, Pori Department JUKKA MÄKELÄ, University of Lapland, Rovaniemi, Finland Web browsers have become one of the most commonly used software and are important communication tool to access our data- driven, increasingly visual Internet. Browser graphics speed is essential for many commercial web applications – e-commerce sites, web portals, content management systems (CMS’s), therefore web developers should well understand their possibilities. Browsers can be seen as multi-input (HTML-text, images, CSS, Scripts) multi-output (code for processor, graphics card, sound system) translators, but little is known about their 'internal life', especially how they render graphics. Browsers interpreting HTML5 documents have two graphic modes: Retained Mode (images defined in HTML text and animated with CSS) and Immediate Mode (images created on canvas and animated with JavaScript). In order to understand differences of these modes in animation rendering speed were created nine different versions of an animation of Lunar Eclipse which were tested in six major PC and Android mobile phone browsers. Results indicate, that there are no significant differences in major browsers except that IE and Edge (still) lag behind in implementing novel graphics/video formats and that in all tested browsers Retained Mode is at least two times quicker than Immediate Mode.
