I have no idea since it has been a long time since high school and I really don't remember what they knew before. How has the direction of your life changed since high school? I never thought that I would spend a lot of time in, of all places, Yugoslavia or that I would attend astrology conferences with all sorts of bizarre people (not in Yugoslavia) I didn't imagine that I might try mountain climbing or political campaigning. Obviously, my life has no fixed direction which is something I didn't know in high school. Do you have any high school memories you’d like to share? Marching band practice on Halloween night presided over by the notorious Bob Gillett. No one wanted to be there but Mr. G's wrath was legendary and attendance was mandatory. Gillett always picked complicated routines which we messed up. Too bad he didn't keep it simple. Eggs were thrown, after all it was Halloween. PRESENTLY Are you retired (or anticipating retiring)? Retired From what vocation are you retired (or anticipate retiring from)? I retired from my job which involved working in various capacities for the City of Portland. When did (or will) you retire? I retired in 2017 which was later than I had planned but worth the wait. FAMILY What is your family situation (significant other, children, grandchildren, dogs, cats, birds, fish)? I am married with one daughter, one cat and 3 chickens. Spouse/Significant Other: Michael Spriniker Did he/she attend MHS? No How did you meet? We met at Oregon State University where we were living in the same dormitory, his room was below mine and when I dumped my coffee out the window he would stick his head out and say "Hey!!" WHAT DID YOU DECIDE TO DO AFTER HIGH SCHOOL? I went to college and after graduation I moved to Portland and got married a year later. Michael had transferred to Reed College so I decided to figure out what I wanted to do when I grew up in a Portland context rather than try my luck at whatever in California. Needless to say, Portland grew on me. PROFESSIONAL AND WORK EXPERIENCES What did/do you do for a living? For a while I was working as an analyst at Tektronix but after the great 1981 layoffs, I took some time off when my daughter was young and then began working for the City of Portland. LEISURE TIME ACTIVITIES In the last five years till now, how (did/do) you spend your free time? Vacations were spent traveling, but while I was working, I was the Communications Editor for our union and wrote articles for Labor Press. I also went to several national conventions and political workshops and participated in the Women's March in Washington DC. What travels have you done (work/pleasure)? I have travelled all over the world but many of my trips involved an activity. I bicycled from London to Athens, skied in Austria, Switzerland, and Sarajevo and went to Australia as part of a women's dragon boat team. Spontaneity is what I enjoy, I’m not really crazy about schedules and reservations but I do like airbnb. Read any good books lately? The Dinner by Herman Koch. This book starts out with a amusingly cynical but relatable narrator who has interesting views on his family and society in general but morphs into something totally unexpected and rather horrifying. What gives meaning to your life and makes you look forward to tomorrow? I do like to travel and am always planning some sort of trip. I have always lived for the present and can enjoy the here and now without too much thought of past disappointments. Travel makes you realize that people are people, we have more in common than not. I enjoy the natural world which provides enough meaning for a lifetime. THINGS YOU WOULD HAVE TOLD US HAD WE ASKED THE RIGHT QUESTIONS? What question should we have asked? What are some ridiculous reasons for coming to your 50th high school class reunion? What is your answer to the question? I took a wrong turn off I-5 and, while taking a shortcut I stopped to use the restroom at the casino and voila my class reunion.
