Frahmia 5:1-10. This article presents the diversity of Bryophytes of the lowlands and midlands of the Calicut (Kozhikode) district of Kerala in the Peninsular India. It provides a list of 57 species, mainly from the thickly populated areas. 1. Introduction The Calicut is well known as the historical spot where Vasco da Gamma, the Portugese explorer, landed in search of bio-resources of India. Currently it is known as Kozhikode. It is of great historical relevance as the capital of the kingdom of the Zamorin’s and later that of the Malabar district during the British period. It is notable for its rich biodiversity at all levels from habitats and species. Abstract Cyanobacteria are Gram negative, photosynthetic and nitrogen fixing microorganisms which contribute much to our present-day life as medicines, foods, biofuels and biofertilizers. Western Ghats are the hotspots of biodiversity with rich combination of microbial flora including cyanobacteria. Though cosmopolitan in distribution, their abundance in tropical forests are not fully exploited. To fill up this knowledge gap, the present research was carried out on the cyanobacterial flora of Peruvannamuzhi forest and Janaki forests of Western Ghats in Kozhikode District, North Kerala State, India. Extensive specimen collections were conducted during South-West monsoon (June to September) and North-East monsoon (October to December) in the year 2019. The highest diversity of cyanobacteria was found on rock surfaces. A total of 18 cyanobacterial taxa were identified. Among them filamentous heterocystous forms showed maximum diversity with 10 species followed by non- heterocystous forms with 8 species. The highest number of cyanobacteria were identified from Peruvannamuzhi forest with 15 taxa followed by Janaki forest with 3 taxa. The non- heterocystous cyanobacterial genus Oscillatoria Voucher ex Gomont showed maximum abundance with 4 species. In this study we reported Planktothrix planktonica (Elenkin) Agagnostidis & Komárek 1988, Oscillatoria euboeica Anagnostidis 2001 and Nostoc interbryum Sant’Anna et al. 2007 as three new records from India.

INTRODUCTION HISTORY OF THE DISTRICT Kozhikode as a district came into existence on 1st January 1957. After the formation of Kerala state in 1956, when Malabar district was divided into three districts, the Central district with headquarters at Calicut (Kozhikode) was named as Kozhikode. The district, which initially had 5 taluks, had undergone several changes and the present district with 4 taluks was formed in 2013. The early history of the district is lost in obscurity. Neither inscription nor works of classical geographers and poets help us in reconstructing in full its early history. However, it is certain that during the Sangam Age the district formed part of the empire of the Cheras. During the Sangam age i.e. in the first two centuries of A.D the district was known as Poozhinad, which was later, annexed to Chera empire. The history of Kozhikode district for the next few centuries i.e. upto 8th century A.D is obscure. Kozhikode and its surroundings were part of Polanad ruled by Kolathiris. The ancestors of present Zamorin family defeated Kolathiri’s forces and established their headquarters at Kozhikode. Because of the persistent efforts and administrative abilities of the rulers who were later known as Zamorin, Kozhikode became an important commercial and trading centre during post Sangam age. During the pre Portuguese period the Zamorin achieved the suzerainty over a large track of land and many neighbouring Rajas accepted him as their protector.
